16.01.2022 Covid-19 The Silver Lining We are all acutely aware of the downsides of this terrible virus that is currently impacting most areas of the globe. However, there are some upsides. I am certainly not trivialising the destruction that is occurring with deaths, sickness, business closures, unemployment, isolation, travel restrictions etc. Depending on how severely you have been impacted will depend on how many of the below you may see as relevant. For those of us needing a do...se of positivity at this time, here are three silver linings that we can focus on to keep some optimism on the longer term future. 1. The Environment With the world slowing down abruptly I have seen and heard stories about the opportunity it is providing for the world to heal. Reduced activity is leading to reduced pollution. Satellite images around the world are showing greatly reduced emissions. There were even pictures recently of the waters in Venice running clear for the first time in recent memory due to the reduced activity. Although this hiatus is likely to be short lived, it is a momentary opportunity for our environment to take a breath of fresh air and for some research to be undertaken on the positive impacts occurring during this crisis. 2. Family Connections Most people including me are not excited about the self-isolation that is forcing people to stay home. However, this may be an opportunity to increase connections with both your immediate and wider family. I have school age children, so we are trying to develop a routine where we each have our own space at home but also where we spend time together playing games and doing activities as a family. On the wider family front, we have set up a weekly Zoom call with all of the extended family members around the country. This is something we had not done before. Even grandparents in their 80’s who had a laptop joined the conversation and were uplifted to see everyone and hear about what they had been doing. It seems neglectful that we had not already been doing this. I hope that it continues when life starts to return to normal. 3. Appreciation Let’s stop for a minute and think of the joy that we will have when things start to go back to normal. We can go to a restaurant with our family or have a party with our friends. We can go to the cinema, gym, place of worship, café, school, university, clubs, pubs etc. Perhaps this is an opportunity to stop and think of all the things we have. Sometimes things need to be taken away from us before we appreciate them. So, I encourage you to think about that joy of resuming your favourite activities and social gatherings. Maybe then we may also not take them for granted. Justin Savaille, Managing Director W www.managementpt.com
