24.01.2022 Good morning! A local Mandurah Physio is doing her Masters in Womens Health and really needs your help! She is doing some incredible research about Urinary Incontinence and Pelvic Organ Prolapse and as with any research the more data the better.... Below is a link to an anonymous survey so if this applies to you she and the greater Physio community (ie me!) Would really appreciate you filling it in and/or sharing. More than happy to answer any questions or pass you on to Katie if needed. Thank you!!

24.01.2022 As the weather cools down it so easy to stay inside. To keep you moving and keep the kids entertained, why not jump onto the back lawn and crank out some three legged downward dogs?! This little session was followed by little Raf getting thrown into the air for 5 mins, then a great game of chasey- gets the heart pumping in no time!

23.01.2022 Why you should get to the beach! Walking on soft sand requires 2-3 times more energy than walking at the same speed on a hard surface It also works the small intrinsic muscles of your foot, which may aid in supporting your arches if you have the tendency to roll in... The soft sand (especially in bare feet) is more of a proprioceptive challenge for your body. What?! You say? It challenges your balance and can work wonders if you are rehabbing from an ankle sprain/injury Need to work your quads (thighs)? Try walking backwards in the soft sand, or, better yet, walk backwards up a sand dune. That will get the quads burning in all the right ways! And who doesn't want this as their gym?! So if the salt, sunset and cool water isn't enough to get you there, your physio says..."get to the beach"!!

23.01.2022 Do you keep rolling your ankle? Something that often gets missed after an ankle injury is retraining balance. High level activities that train your brain and body to correct small movements that might result in another injury. Your body is great at preventing these small rolls in a healthy ankle, but once it has been injured it is much harder. Balance retraining can help and is so important if you want to play sport, skateboard, hike or do anything outdoors, without injuring... your ankle again. Feel free to get in touch if you want to know more!

21.01.2022 ~ CHRONIC PAIN ~ Although this article refers specifically to St Lucia, World Physiotherapy Day is globally recognised, with the theme of this year being to raise awareness of a Physio's role in treating people with Chronic pain. It's an interesting read and summaries a few points really nicely.... As always, if you have any questions feel free to get in touch

21.01.2022 Knee pain can be caused by so many different things, but a common one I see is Patello-Femoral Joint (PFJ) pain. The PFJ is the joint between the knee cap and the rest of your knee- it needs to move properly every time you walk, run, squat, jump or move your knee. If this doesn't happen properly, you can end up with pain and wearing of the joint. This taping can be so effective as part of a treatment plan for people with PFJ pain so if you get knee pain, especially while you ...exercise, it is definitely worth getting checked out so you can keep doing what you love! As always I'm happy to answer questions so feel free to get in touch!

20.01.2022 Text neck- its a thing! Our head is heavy- around 5kg give or take. The head and spine is designed beautifully. If our heads center of gravity is sitting on top of the axis of our spine, it takes very little muscle activity to keep it there.... Enter mobile phone, tablet or device...and that design goes straight out the window! Tilting your head forward to look at your phone puts a huge amount of force through the joints and discs in your neck. It also means the muscles in the back of your neck have to be working overtime to hold your head there. The result? Maintaining this position for long periods of time puts you at huge risk of neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, stiffness and wear and tear of the small joints in your neck. It is so easily corrected by just being mindful of the position you hold your head (and your phone) in when you are perusing. So.....stand up straight!! I bet you all have by the time youve read this Cheers, Cat

13.01.2022 Who knows what you're going to find when you walk a new path? A friend told me about a great walking path along the beach. I walk along the beach all the time, but how is this?! Maybe paradise is being able to drink your coffee on this chair every morning! What's my point? Try walking/ running/ riding a different path this week. Show me what you find!... See more

13.01.2022 Feeling wonky?! Gym injuries are so common. Often people are stronger or more flexible on one side than the other and this can lead to a higher risk of injury. Something I love to do as a Physio is to help people prevent injuries in the first place, or at the very least prevent them from re-occurring. ... Biomechanical assessments are a great way of checking your alignment, flexibiity and strength imbalances during movements. By picking up these imbalances, I can give you guidance on training them specifically to ensure your body is working evenly, reducing the risk of injury. If you have any questions, I am more than happy to help! As always, online bookings are available at www.manaphysiotherapy.com.au Happy workouts!

11.01.2022 Finding 30 means you are not moving for 23.5 hours!! Im not out to make people feel guilty...but this struck a cord with me. Current guidelines for healthy adults between 18-65 yrs is to find 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week. ... Average this to 225 mins and that works out to 32 minutes per day. Moderate intensity means you should be breathing more heavily than normal but still be able to maintain a conversation, albeit perhaps in shorter sentences. Even if we managed to get 30 mins of moderate intensity movement every day, it still would mean that we could be relatively sedentary for 23.5 hours every day! Scary huh??! If you have to drive a lot for work, have a desk job, or both, it is way harder for you to get moving. So every little bit counts. Yes find your 30, but think about what you do over the day and get creative. Stand whenever you can, march on the spot or cut laps of the office while you are on your phone, waiting for the kettle to boil or your lunch to heat up. Dont be afraid to look like a dork! Crank out a few squats at your desk, get to the playground (when was the last time you tried monkey bars??!), wrestle (thanks Elisa!), dance, clean....whatever!! Even if you get to the gym or out for exercise every day (kudos to you) still think about moving a bit more throughout the day. Youre body will love you for it!!

09.01.2022 Is learning to relax the key to your pain? Muscles need to be strong. They also need to relax. For the strong powerful muscles in our body to work properly, they need to switch on...and they need to switch off! This sounds simple, but it is not for many people. If you have pain and have been doing strength exercises til the cows come home with no progress, perhaps teaching your core, back, glutes, hamstrings, pecs (any problem area) to relax as well as contract is the missin...g part of the puzzle. Of course, everyone is different, but this is definitely something to think about.

09.01.2022 ? SHIN PAIN ? As the new year gets under way loads of people start to hit the sidewalk to get back into shape after the Christmas indulgences. If you took some time off exercise over summer or are getting stuck into a new regime, shin pain (think shin splints) is a really common problem. It is one of those issues that can just be a niggle or can become really painful, potentially stopping people from exercising all together.... If shin pain is an issue for you, it's definitely worth getting checked out. In most cases it's very treatable and with some hands on treatment and exercise guidance you'll keep on track to nail your fitness goals. As always, feel free to get in touch if you have any questions! Cat

09.01.2022 Some people might call me crazy but I've had what I think is a genius idea. Disclaimer: not physio related and any dieticians/ nutritionists out there I'd love to know what you think! I love smoothies but I don't find them filling enough to be a meal. I'm also not keen on powdered food (ie. Protein powder)... So here it is....my kale, banana, almond milk and silken tofu smoothie. Creamy, delicious, nutritious, weird! Don't knock it til you've tried it!! Then let me know your thoughts Cat

08.01.2022 I came across this flowchart for all the different causes of Low Back Pain. I think it is great- This is why everyone's pain is different and everyone will respond to different things.
