23.01.2022 Do you know your plastics? Degradable, Biodegradable, Compostable- what's the difference? DEGRADABLE- STILL PLASTIC... Just breaks up into smaller pieces over time into micro plastics. These microplastics are not only a threat to marine-life but they enter the food chain at a lower level and make their way up the food chain. One could argue that these bags are worse for the environment an have been banned totally in other countries. BIODEGRADABLE - Can be plant-based materials rather than petroleum. Require exposure to UV light and 50 degrees celsius to biodegrade. Unlikely to be met in the ocean or landfill plus when denied oxygen can produce methane, aiding climate change. Still lethal to marine life. COMPOSTABLE- but not in the ocean. These bags can be completely broken down and return to the earth leaving no harmful traces. However the correct temperatures, water and oxygen levels must be right for them to break down. There-in lies the problem for the oceans. In addition using plant based alternatives uses precious land to grow crops to turn into a single use item - not good for the planet. 01.01.2022 We would like to invite you to Movie Wednesdays @ Mandala May 30th for an intimate screening of ALBATROSS hosted by Sea Shepherd Australia Marine Debris Campaign. ALBATROSS is a powerful visual journey into the heart of a gut-wrenching environmental tragedy. On Midway island, in the remote North Pacific Ocean, tens of thousands of Laysan albatross chicks lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic. ALBATROSS takes us on a journey, as we face this tragedy we must... also confront our own complicity head on. Chris Jordan, an Internationally-acclaimed photographer returned to Midway over many years with his team, documenting the cycles of life and death, and capturing stunning and intimate portraits of these magnificent seabirds. He has generously made this film available to Sea Shepherd Australia to host as a FREE screening. The film will be introduced by Sea Shepherd Campaigner Scott Wallace and following the screening there will be a Q&A. All donations will be gratefully received.
