22.01.2022 Here is Lucas’s third video in our Traditional Characters learning journey. In both mainland China and Taiwan they use compass directions ‘North East South West’ lots in their place and street names! Lucas explains how the simplified character for East makes more sense in its traditional form , and how being able to recognize these compass point characters on street signs will be a huge advantage to not getting lost!

19.01.2022 We are planning a trip to Taiwan , which means learning how to recognize Traditional Chinese Characters! Here is a little video that Lucas has made to introduce how we will do this! Stay tuned as Lucas makes more videos of our ‘Traditional Chinese’ Journey ! Aurora is also working hard on a blog to journal this journey, all small layers to our new cultural experience of ‘Taiwan’ :-)

18.01.2022 Lucas has now got his YouTube Channel ‘Mandarin Chef Down Under’ up and running to share all his bilingual cooking videos with you :-) Feel free to subscribe and learn some Mandarin while enjoying cooking :-) Poached Eggs added, Tomato Soup the latest, Lemonade Scones coming shortly :-) https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCmkXoZbSBatdphvtp5H2lbA

17.01.2022 Lucas has mapped out Taiwan’s National Parks for us as we research which ones to explore :-) A National Park is in simplified Chinese and in traditional.

15.01.2022 It’s Moon Festival time! Wrapping dumplings is a Chinese family tradition that we are slowly mastering over years of practice. Such a joy in preparing food together that takes mindfulness, patience and art :-) Then devouring in 5 minutes :-) Happy Moon Festival Everyone:-)

14.01.2022 For those who need some kind of systematic map to learning how to recognize traditional characters (when you already know simplified characters) this link is gold :-) http://www.language.berkeley.edu/fanjian/tier3.html

14.01.2022 We plan to hike Taiwan ‘plastic water bottle free’! To do this we will be using our ‘Lifestraw’ bottles :-) In Mandarin they are called is ‘life’, is ‘straw’. We will be learning how to talk about waste pollution and water purification in Mandarin, so that we can promote our ‘lifestraws’ in Taiwan :-) More to come on that, but in the meantime if you would like to find out how LifeStraws work you can read Aurora’s write up of how we used them in Nepal http://missdonnamandarin.edublogs.org//our-taiwan-zero-pl/

13.01.2022 Finding ways to practice reading Mandarin in traditional characters, and no better way than to sing along to UK band's "Transition' songs...having been based in Taiwan for over a decade they have a fusion of eastern and western musical influence, and most of their songs are in Mandarin. Here is a catchy one, in English and Mandarin, the lyrics are included on their YouTube link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScKz47gIKSM

12.01.2022 Lucas has made a video just in time for Mother's Day so that you can make Kombucha Scones () together :-) Just like lemonade scones... just as yummy and fluffy...but healthier :-) If you don't count the jam and cream :-) He has put the transcript into the Youtube description so that you can follow in English or Mandarin :-) Have a lovely Mother's Day :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkvOuZtrnIs

10.01.2022 We have been learning all about the history, culture, politics and geography of Taiwan, and this video cutely sums it all up :-)

03.01.2022 Here is Lucas‘s second video in our series of learning how to recognize Traditional Characters. In Taiwan we will need to get buses, trains, taxis, and hire bikes...so this week we are exploring the character , or in its traditional form, which means ‘vehicle’, as Lucas explains, we will be looking out for this character lots in Taiwan!!!

03.01.2022 We are reading the ‘Horrible Histories’ books alongside watching the shows on ABC, their silly songs really do make learning about Chinese Dynasties and other bits of ‘boring’ history a bit of fun :-) https://m.youtube.com/watch

02.01.2022 The best thing about your daughter getting older! Old enough to watch those classic movies together...just watched this one together, and this time the classic moment was watching my daughter’s ‘What the????’ gobsmacked reaction at the end :-) The next best thing, working out how to say the classic lines in Chinese!! - The Sixth Sense - I see dead people!!

01.01.2022 Lucas has decided to make a series of bilingual cooking videos, starting simply with the good old boiled egg and soldiers :-) He hopes it will help both Chinese kids learning English, and English speaking kids learning Chinese. For Mandarin learners the pinyin script is also on our blog page: https://missdonnamandarin.edublogs.org//boiled-egg-and-so/
