24.01.2022 With the Perth, Peel, and the Southwest in lockdown for the past week. We have delved back into technology to continue our lessons over Zoom. Pictured below is last nights senior class! 24.01.2022 Hi everyone, a special post for you all today regarding the Pink Belt Project. Pink Belt Project was started in 2018 by Kristy Hitchens from our association who discovered for herself when she started Taekwondo at age 40 (now training in Karate) how martial arts training provided a unique combination of health and well-being benefits that went far beyond the expected lessons in self-defence. Pink Belt Project provides women in need particularly those healing from the trauma... of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault with a one-year scholarship, allowing them to train for free at their local martial arts club. More than 20 traditional martial arts clubs so far from Australia and the United States including the Mandurah dojo have come together to throw their collective weight behind a unique project designed to empower women. Pink Belt Project has received support from: Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist for Australia in Taekwondo Lauren Burns 3 x Olympian and Taekwondo World Champion Carmen Marton 2018 Commonwealth Taekwondo Champion Kate McAdam Marvel Avengers stuntwoman Ky Furneaux If you would like to know more about the Pink Belt Project please apply through either the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pinkbeltproject/or email: [email protected] See more

22.01.2022 Hi everyone, we hope you are all safe and sound. As its a trying time, we understand most families are going through a period of great change. We are currently endeavouring to provide students with an outlet through their martial arts to assist with children's mental and physical health with objectives to achieve. All of this material can be accessed when students and parents can be comfortable to get back into a training routine. If you haven't yet joined our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/Southwestgojuryu is the link for current students and parents. We have just posted our second online lesson, make sure to check it out! We have already seen some of your home dojo setups please keep sending us more!

22.01.2022 Hi Everyone, training back in the dojo was scheduled to begin tonight but unfortunately due to the storm and some water damage to the gym, it will have to be cancelled. Instead, as per the last few weeks Zoom sessions will be run in the place of the lesson. The codes for the sessions will be sent out closer to 4pm.

21.01.2022 On Sunday, the Associations black belts travelled to the Honbu Dojo in Bunbury. The instructors of the association had the first session of the day working on advanced kata, Steve Shihan, Adam Sensei, and Ann Sempai all got to work with Hanshi. In the second session of the day, all black belts in the association were invited to participate, in all we had 19 attendees with 6 being from the Mandurah dojo. This session covered Kata, kumite aspects and a session with Steve Shihan covering functional movement with step and slide actions and low kicks to be an equaliser in close in kumite.

21.01.2022 Be sure to join us down at the beach on Wednesday, for the Seniors and Teenagers first beach training session of the year!

21.01.2022 Even though we can't meet face to face, our senior class is still able to train twice a week via online zoom sessions, a mixture of a white belt student all the way to a black belt student with over 30 years experience and everything in between! This is in addition to one on one sessions with Steve Shihan to keep everyone as sharp as possible before we can conduct face to face training sessions again in the future.

17.01.2022 Mandurah Goju Ryu Karate wish you all a Merry Christmas and a well deserved day off from training!

17.01.2022 On Sunday, the South West Goju Ryu Karate Association which Mandurah Goju Ryu are a part of held an event "Women in Karate". The event was a huge success with 24 women attending on the day and was run by 3 of the association black belts Shay Holdsworth, Ann Draper and Diane Burnett with special guest from Kofukan Karate, Karen Hollings. Shay, Anne, and Diane would like to express their gratitude for everyone who attended and would like to individually thank the people who att...ended. Ann: " The Women in Karate workshop was well received by both the students and the mums. A big thank you to the students for their attendance and enthusiasm, which has made this workshop a success". Shay: "The day went really well, and a lot of people got different things out of the day. I think the sharing of stories about why we started, and common issues that as females we face as they go though the different stages of life resonated well with everyone". Diane: "Thanks to all the girls that attended the female workshop. I hope you had as much fun as I did. Hope to see you all at the next one." Chief instructor Alan Burdett Hanshi, and President Steve Casserly Shihan were excited at the positivity and energy created. They commented " The workshop demonstrated and showcased the best of Women and Girls participating in martial arts, specifically Goju Ryu Karate. This event helps to shape the direction of our training making it stronger with strengthening the relationships and spreading the vast depth of martial arts knowledge". It really was a fantastic day, and we can't wait until the next one!

17.01.2022 Hi everyone, tomorrow are our association events "Women in Karate" and the black belt training session. 16.01.2022 We are bringing back one of the most popular videos from the dojo in the past 2 years, with Zakk destroying a set of hand pads. At Mandurah Goju Ryu Karate we don't restrict ourselves to a traditional karate experience, instead we bring in other aspects to enhance all of our students training, including groundwork, Bo work, and various pad drills to increase all of our knowledge.

15.01.2022 On Saturday, Steve Shihan and Alden Sempai went up to midland to train with Bob Allen Sensei at the Swan Hills Goju Ryu. it was an excellent morning training with the club and really does exemplify the high standard of Goju Ryu Karate in WA.

14.01.2022 Hey everyone, tonights training will be in the common area D block not the gym. D block is 20 metres further down the main walkway. Once you get to the canteen area cross overgo and go down to the left of the walkway to the class area. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

14.01.2022 Leading up to the gradings in the next two weeks we have had a strong focus on footwork with the classes. Utilising step and slide movements and obstacle course drills to enhance the effectiveness of our Karate. As you can see below Emmy is using a step and slide to evade Dale Sempai's attcks!

14.01.2022 Last night of the year for the dojo in 2020 and everyone got the chance to bring a friend. 12.01.2022 Last weekend was our 2nd Annual Karate Expo down in Bridgetown. Once again special thanks to Alan Hanshi, Steve Shihan, and Scott Jokyo for all the work they put in to organise the day and all the coaches and instructors who created sessions and came down for the day and Klaus Shihan our guest instructor. It really was a unique event with all 6 dojo's from our association involved as well as students from two different associations coming down for the day. The students got the chance to learn new things in the martial arts world like Bo, knife defence, and groundwork. Topics that are not generally taught in every day class. We really can't wait till the one next year.

12.01.2022 Hi everyone, hope this Easter holiday fills your home with peace, joy, and plenty of Easter eggs. You can work off all the chocolate with some training during the week!

11.01.2022 That's a wrap, folks! Another start of year beach training sessions are over! We have some snaps to show off the fun (and sometimes uncomfortable) time we had down at the beach. Starting this Monday we are back in the dojo starting at 5pm for the juniors, 6-7pm for the teenagers and 6.30pm-8pm for the seniors. We look forward to seeing you there!

11.01.2022 Over the weekend Shihan, Alden Sempai and Dale met down near the dojo to practise Sanseiru Bunkai. With the aim of performing the bunkai at the Black Belt grading at the end of the year, Dale has been proactive in his training and sort extra training time to work on aspects of his karate that might not be taught in the regular class. With the regular pattern learned now we are starting to break the bunkai down to effective movements and dynamic footwork to create realistic attack and defence sequences.

05.01.2022 Hi everyone, We are now officially back in the dojo! Classes are back to the original times and we are up and running. If you have any questions regarding coming back please send a message to either Steve Shihan, or this page and we will get back to you ASAP. One of the new aspects we have brought into training in the last week is the effectiveness of low kicks in self-defence. As you can see in the photo's below Kakuto Geri is an excellent weapon in the karate arsenal to disrupt the target, aiming for joints and causing a great deal of trouble for any wannabe assailants. Kyan and Kaiden have picked up the Kakuto Geri basics, with the use of a chair as a balancing aid developing the skills and reflexes required to efficiently turn Kakuto Geri into a devastating kick.

01.01.2022 Hi everyone, with the increased risk of infection from the Covid-19 virus and the high importance we place with our member's health, we are TEMPORARILY not going to conduct Face to Face training sessions. This includes tonights session. Fortunately for our students, this does not mean that we are ceasing coaching. Shihan and the senior coaches are currently compiling learning and training material and grade based instructional videos that will be available online for our st...udents to keep training in the interim. Access to this learning material via the cloud will be provided by email links and will cover all facets of our training. Currently, the Bo material is uploaded and ready to go! Emails will go out by Friday. Studying martial arts places us in an advantageous position compared to many other sports, arts and hobbies. We can all continue to enjoy our training as individuals outside our dojo during this challenging time. Please read this message to the junior students. Please contact Shihan if you have any questions or suggestions for training at this time. We consider this an opportunity to enhance our learning and study of our martial art. Thanks Steve Shihan and the Mandurah Dojo
