24.01.2022 To celebrate Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair this year we are excited to share a new T-shirt design: 'Black and White Brothers' by our Chairman and senior Gooniyandi artist Mervyn Street. This design has been developed from a charcoal drawing by Mervyn, created in recent months through this highly political time. "We always say what colour are you, we say I'm black, I'm brown, or I'm kardiya (whitefella) but look at the shadow its not different. The shadow is the same." Meryvn St...reet. Get onto the DAAF portal https://daaf.com.au/Art_Centres/managermangkaja-com/ And pre- order your t-shirts direct from our website. Link here: http://www.mangkaja.com/category/shop/merchandise The range comes in a new colour of copper for the adults in mens and womens cuts and in children's sizes in red and yellow.

23.01.2022 Thank you Amos for this lovely piece celebrating our founder and NATSIAA winner Ngarralja Tommy May! He couldn’t be prouder!

22.01.2022 Today we farewelled a remarkable woman and artist the beloved Mrs D.Japulija at her funeral in Noonkanbah. We send our deepest condolences to her family, to her sister Sonia Kurarra, her brother Percy Brown and the many family members grieving her passing. DJ was a sweet and kind soul who was a pleasure to work with and is greatly missed by everyone at Mankaja Arts. ... Her artwork was vibrant and reflected her own fashion and style always wearing colourful jewellery, headwear and clothing. She was a master of colour, celebrating her billabong country in all of her works. Her art has been exhibited around the world, most recently in Belgium and New York. DJ was one of the innovative artists who led the way to new forms of art practise at Mangkaja experimenting most recently with Perspex and fashion. DJ and her sister Sonia Kurarra created the incredible installation of stunning Perspex painted panels in The National 2019 at the MCA. She won the Port Hedland Art Award in 2015 and has been a finalist in many of the major art prizes around Australia. Her artworks featured in the mangkaja x Gorman collection and she lived to see her grandchildren modelling her clothes at Guwardi Aged care last year. For all of her successes in the art world, she was most happy relaxing to music, sometimes painting her beautiful canvas along to the beat. She devoted much of her younger years to teaching art to younger generations at her local community school. She was a much loved family woman and an artist who we all enjoyed working with. She had a gentle and sweet way with the Mangkaja staff, and a gorgeous chuckle that we miss hearing in our studio. Her legacy lives on through her family and in her stunning artworks and stories she shared. May she rest peacefully.

20.01.2022 Illiam Nargoodah is our youngest finalist in the NATSIAAs, his second time around with a stunning set of hand made knives and forged blades. We are very proud to see Illiam succeeding, he is a hardworking artist and respected staff member who has supported his elders in their art practise for many years. Have a listen to him speaking about his art practise here with RTRFM!

20.01.2022 We are thrilled for our artists and Gorman to be finalists in the NIFAs and honoured to stand alongside such brilliant collaborations across the country. We couldn’t be prouder of our Mangkaja x Gorman collaboration. We had the greatest time developing and sharing the collection and the positive impacts continue to roll on for our artists and community. And if there is any doubt or speculation - our artists were paid very well!! We havent shared the details due to our artists privacy needs. Lisa Gorman thank you and your team for working with us to make this the best collab it could be with great impact on the ground here in FX! And thanks to Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair for the incredible opportunity to launch with our fellow artists and peers at Country to Couture!

Without our senior women we are lost, you are such strong leaders and guides for our upcoming generations! Ngumpan community were so welcoming and supportive! So many orgs were involved. Big thanks to partners who made the camp a reality - Marnin Studio and Yiriman Women Bush Enterprises who workshopped with the Mangkaja team and Rukaji crew especially Eva Nargoodah who did a huge amount of the initial communication with traditional owners and community! 10.01.2022 One of the great things we get to do at Mangkaja is engage with other artists - learning new skills and sharing in the creative process. Collaboration is core to our business... be it between artists of different language groups in FX and our region or creators from varying cultures and completely different artistic fields! Natalie Davey has been creating some stunning new jewellery pieces with the guidance of the wonderful Jessica Jubb Jewellery. Jess is a WA based jeweller... who lived in Fitzroy Crossing for a number of years and continues to grow exciting partnerships with our artists. Check out her stunning jewellery practise and the awesome collections we are creating together including cast pieces and our hand painted Perspex earrings! Some gorgeous in-progress works that Nat Davey made have been on show at Fremantle Arts Centre for the Revealed Exhibition. And we are working on getting some editions available in future!! There’s a podcast too, with Nat and jess chatting about making, living in Fitzroy Crossing, casting and crocodiles. Go to - https://shows.acast.com//episode-7-revealed-exhibition-202

03.01.2022 Some more great pics to share from our second day of the Kimberley Women Artists camp at Ngumpan last week. It kicked off from day break with Kimberley women making and sharing together. There was painting with the kids, screen print development, Lino and block printing, bush dying and basket weaving, Bush medicine and cane toad skinning and candle making demos with our Kimberley women and students from the Fitzroy Valley High School! The students gifted all the women a T-s...hirt that featured the words for ‘women’ in all the language groups that attended and made for a very coordinated group pic! There were so many senior women and orgs involved that we will have to do a separate appreciation post for them! But we must acknowledge the incredible group of women who gathered from across the Kimberley for a gorgeous couple of days on Gooniyandi and Walmajarri Country . A massive thanks to our funders which includes state and federal funding and support from philanthropic friends of Mangkaja, plus some serious volunteer hours from our community and staff teams! Amazing experience of our region coming together!
