24.01.2022 BENIGN POSITIONAL VERTIGO Vertigo, dizziness, feeling off balance and thick head are some of the terms people use to describe a condition known as Benign Positional Vertigo or BPPV. BPPV may start suddenly, often getting out of bed at night and is terrifying , as the head spins and often people vomit with it. Frequently they end up in Emergency which is important to rule out other sudden causes of dizziness. However most often they have the condition of benign vertigo whi...ch is caused by tiny crystals in the inner ear which become loose and move into one of the ear canals causing dizziness with certain head movements. Trained physiotherapists can test for this condition and determine which ear is involved. Once established they can perform an Epleys manoeuvre to move the crystals out of the affected area, and most often the dizziness will disappear with 1 or 2 treatments. After treatment advice is given and people can return to their normal lives. It is always important to see your GP or Ear Nose and Throat surgeon initially if this is your first episode of vertigo. Call Penny at Mani Physiotherapy to find out more about it. More than 30 years experience treating neck related headaches and vertigo. #physio #headache # vertigo #dizziness #maniphysio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #backpain #adelaidephysio #bupaphysio #nibphysio #kneepain #telehealth #shoulderphysio #pain #bestphysioadelaide #exercises #exercisephysiology #telehealth #maniphysiotherapy #rehabilitation #posture #backpain #sportsmedicine #sportsrehab

16.01.2022 Currently many of us are doing a lot more work from home than normal. Although it may be more of a relaxed environment, and potentially means working in your trackies, you should still be thinking about the workplace environment your in. Desk-based jobs can often lead to complaints of neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain and wrist pain. To assist in reducing this there are some key things you can be doing;... Desk set-up Simple and easy modifications to your desk set-up will help you maintain a better posture and keep you more comfortable Pick a comfortable chair, your feet should be able to rest flat on the floor whilst maintaining a comfortable sitting position. Pick a desk/table that is the appropriate height and comfortable to reach your devices/documents Place your laptop or computer on the desk so that the top of the screen is eye level. If you are using a laptop and need to raise the height, try placing in on some books, or purchase a laptop stand. If you have raised your laptop, you may need to use a wireless mouse/keyboard so you dont have to stretch to reach them. When using a keyboard your elbows should be close to your sides and forearms parallel to the desk, with wrists in a neutral position Posture and movement Posture and movement Yes, it is important to remember good posture which includes sitting up tall, preventing your head from poking forwards, keeping your shoulders from slouching forwards, however changing your posture regularly can help prevent you from becoming tight and sore. It is ok to slouch occasionally or shift your weight from one side to the other as this will help alleviate tightness that may have built up. The reason for this is our bodies do not like to stay in the same position for too long, movement is medicine! The best thing you can do to prevent any aches or pains during the day is get up and move as often as possible. At the very least a quick 60 second walk around the house or some simple stretches every 20-30 minutes will help. Scheduling a longer time for some exercise (30 minutes, for example) each day is also highly recommended. This could include a walk/bike ride, or home-based resistance or cardiovascular exercises. If you are working from home and would like some more individualized assistance with your set up, or a home-based exercise program, please feel from to contact the Mani Physiotherapy team! #physio #headache #stayathome #workfromhome #adelaidephysiotherapy #ergonomics #maniphysio #physiotherapy #backpain #adelaidephysio #bupaphysio #nibphysio #neckpain #telehealth #shoulderphysio #pain #bestphysioadelaide #exercises #exercisephysiology #telehealth #maniphysiotherapy #rehabilitation #posture #backpain #sportsmedicine #sportsrehab #bupaphysiotherapist

11.01.2022 Back Pain is one of the most common human complaints and may range from an occasional ache to a persistent debilitating and life changing condition. Everyone will tell you how they fixed their back problem, but it is important to realise that there are many different causes of back pain, and that is why it is important to see a musculoskeletal physiotherapist who can examine you and make a diagnosis of the cause of your pain, and then to start appropriate treatment to help ...manage the problem. Occasionally, but rarely surgery may be indicated, but in most cases your back problem can be managed with education, exercise therapy and conservative treatment. Back pain does NOT need to be a life limiting condition if managed properly. A close working relationship with your physio, exercise physiologist and GP can ensure a good prognosis of your back pain....there are no quick fixes but diagnosis and management are vital. #physio #headache #backpain #lowbackpain #maniphysio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #backpain #adelaidephysio #bupaphysio #nibphysio #kneepain #telehealth #shoulderphysio #pain #bestphysioadelaide #exercises #exercisephysiology #telehealth #maniphysiotherapy #rehabilitation #posture #backpain #sportsmedicine #sportsrehab

07.01.2022 Many people suffer with chronic and debilitating headaches. Whilst it is very important to be thoroughly checked by your Doctor, one of the common causes of headache can be your neck and the surrounding tissues. This may involve muscle tightness and shortening as a result of prolonged poor posture resulting in pain at the base of the skull and then radiating into the head. Joint stiffness, trigger points, muscle weakness and tension in the neck may also be contributing and ou...r physiotherapists are skilled at examining your neck, diagnosing the structures which may be causing your headaches and then instructing you on how to remediate the contributing factors. This may involve posture correction & advice, neck strengthening & stretching exercises and local hands on treatment such as massage, trigger point therapy and joint mobilisation if indicated. Alleviating chronic headache, if neck related is both rewarding and beneficial at any age and can improve ones quality of life in many ways. #physio #maniphysio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #backpain #adelaidephysio #bupaphysio #nibphysio #kneepain #telehealth #shoulderphysio #pain #bestphysioadelaide #exercises #exercisephysiology #telehealth #physicaltherapy #rehabilitation #physiotherapist #physicaltherapist #posture #backpain #sportsmedicine #sportsrehab #adelaidephysio

02.01.2022 Ankle sprains are common injuries that affect both general and athletic populations alike. Inadequate rehabilitation after an acute ankle sprain is considered as the main cause in the development of chronic ankle instability. Studies have revealed that only 10-30% of ankle sprains fail conservative management which could be due to inept rehabilitation, incomplete rehabilitation or recurrent injuries resulting in anatomical impairments. These cases may be indicated for surgery.... In acute ankle sprains (rolled ankles) patients present with persistent discomfort, swelling, pain or tenderness along the inner or outer aspects of their ankles. Subjects with chronic ankle instability normally present with the history of multiple episodes of ankle sprain and residual symptoms such as a feeling of instability in the joint or giving way lasting for a minimum of 1 year, post initial incidence of sprain. Pain sometimes increases at night probably due to increase in swelling. Ankle sprains are common injuries that require thorough evaluation and evidence-driven interventions to promote an expedited and complete recovery. Treatment and management for Chronic ankle sprains include: Ankle range of motion exercises Neuromuscular and proprioceptive training Kinesio taping or Rigid taping Orthotics if indicated Balance and functional training Strengthening the muscles globally along with targeting specific ankle muscles Hands on treatment if persistent swelling or scarring If you are complaining of a sore ankle or difficulty in weight bearing then consult our physiotherapists for evaluation, assessment and treatment of your ankles.
