25.01.2022 Artist of the Month- Keenan Cordrey Keenan Cordrey started painting at the gallery before Christmas How did you get in to painting? ... I was sanding back a few emu eggs and Gordon just told me to grab one and have a go at it and I ended up having a go at an emu egg and now I’ve done one canvas. I’m just on to my second canvas and I’ve also just done the background for my third canvas. My grandparents on both sides of my family painted so it’s pretty much in my blood. How do you feel when you are painting? Just relaxes you and you’re just in your own place really. I’m a really shy person, but ever since I’ve been painting in here I’ve been mixing with people that I normally wouldn’t mix in with. It’s good to hear other people’s stories because it motivates you to do better in yourself. I’ve also learnt a lot about the Indigenous culture, Gordon has taught me about all about the traditional ways and all the different colours and what they mean. How do you decide what to paint? I haven’t really worked that out, I just look at a canvas and whatever I think is going to turn out good, I just do it and people say, ‘That’s going to turn out good,’ and it just motivates me to finish it. The painting I’m doing now is dots, it’s taken me 2 to 3 weeks so far to get where it’s at and there’s still a bit to do, but I’m pretty excited to finish it. #artistofthemonth #manitribesgallery #stgeorge

19.01.2022 How would you like to own your very own unique artwork to display in you home or work place? We have up for auction a one of a kind authentic beautiful piece painted by our very talented Gordan leslie lister. The Mani tribes Gallery are auctioning this crosscut saw to raise money for a local 10 year old boy who is on the verge of great success and we want to help him see out his dream.... Cohan Neven is a 10 year old indigenous local St George boy whom has been selected to represent Queensland for athletes in Melbourne later this month. Cohan attends St George state school and thrives in both academics and sport. This year alone Cohan has represented the Balonne Barwin under 35kg rugby league team and was lucky enough to captain the country team picked at the carnival. He has also represented his school in the Balonne district swimming and touch football. His greatest achievement yet has been representing his school, Balonne district, Southwest, and soon to be Queensland for Athletes. Cohan received age champion at school, Balonne and Southwest levels. At his Balonne trials Cohan broke a 26 year record in his 800m in a time of 2:46.93 and hasn't looked back. He improved his time at each level with his recent accomplishment beating his PB by 17.26 seconds at state trials with a time of 2:29.67. No one Cohans age has represented the Queensland athletics team from the south west region in the 800m in over 20 years. This has been the first year Cohan has been able to trial and be selected in teams to represent his school, district, region and now state. As you know with all of his sporting achievements comes a cost, so we we are asking for your help to assist Cohan to the National sports athletic trials in Melbourne. Please dig deep to help this young fella out by bidding on this great prize. 16.01.2022 Artist of the Month - Tracey Campbell Tracey Campbell exhibits her artwork at Mani Tribe’s Gallery. What’s the inspiration behind your artwork?... I can’t say that I actually have a favourite medium. There’s always a story but I think with my Indigenous background, somehow I find myself going back to more traditional forms, telling my life story and my connection to the landscapes and the animals and the stories that have been passed down to me through generations. Why is the Mani Tribe’s Gallery important to St George? It creates some employment, it lifts people’s confidence and self- esteem, it gives our Indigenous community the opportunity to talk about our culture to the wider community be it local or be it to the grey nomads. It gives us a little bit of a voice. What is your connection to the St George artists? I’m an ex- teacher and I’ve taught a lot of the young Murri kids, I’ve taught Gordon (gallery manager), the kids that are walking around out there today, I’ve taught them. I’ve been a teacher, come mentor, come aunty, come community person for them. A lot of them just absorb their culture like a sponge, it gives them a sense of self-worth, a sense of identity, connecting to community family mob. Gordon could now teach me a thing or two. What’s the most inspiring thing about the Mani Tribe’s Gallery and the artists? For me my pride is seeing these kids growing up and now painting how they’ve always wanted to paint. I’ll say to them ‘that is so beautiful, you’ve come such a long way,’ you know try to instil in them a bit more confidence and self-esteem and they have just taken it and run with it so it’s a really big thing. They’re really trying to be strong and build themselves up and this gallery has seen them do that. #artistofthemonth #manitribesgallery #stgeorge

09.01.2022 Artist of the Month - Johnny Tattam Johnny Tattam works at the gallery from Monday to Friday. How did you start painting?... I got my first go at painting with Gordon (Gallery Manager), he started me off with my first canvas and brushes and paints. So one day he seen me drawing in pen, drawing aboriginal art and he’s like, ‘gee you can draw, if you can draw, you can do artwork,’ and he threw a canvas at me. How has painting changed your life? It gives me a lot of patience, which is a good thing. That’s why I like doing dots it teaches me a lot of patience and they teach me a lot of patience in the actual word around me. I like patience as well, it’s a good trait to have when artwork comes in to it. Painting has taught me a lot about my culture and heritage as well. What is your goal for the gallery and your artwork? I hope for it to actually make it world-wide, I’d like to make this place world- wide. Because it would actually make it very nice if we did go world-wide with our artwork and get our name out there and then we’d have a bit more people come through and have a good look. Tell them a few stories. #artistofthemonth #manitribesgallery #stgeorge

09.01.2022 Hi guys.. Where thinking about starting art classes it's a 4 week program. Where just looking at numbers at this stage please let us no if your interested..

08.01.2022 Artist of the Month- Gordon Lister Gordon Lister is the gallery manager, resident artist and teacher at Mani Tribe’s Gallery. How long have you been painting for? ... 22 years. Art was always in my family it was always around me. My Nan did arts and crafts, my Mum did arts & crafts, my Dad he was a sketch artist. So, it was all around me, I had a lot of inspiration through my artwork. What’s your style of painting? I think I was 11 I painted my first fish painting, the yellow belly on a piece of fibro. All I had was four colours, brown, oakey yellow, black and white so there were four main colours that I grew up with so that’s my style today, then four colours. Why is this gallery important? It’s authentic, it’s real. I’ve got artists that came in off the street, that didn’t even know how to paint, couldn’t even control a brush and now they’re in here painting. When I see these young fellas who come in here, well I tell them to tell their story. If the artists can tell a story with their painting, it makes me proud and means I’ve taught them something right. #manitribesgallery #stgeorge #artistofthemonth

08.01.2022 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE FEATURE: Leslie (Gordon) Waraba Lister is a proud Yuwaalaraay man. He is inspired by tradition and the art and stories of his people. Gordon’s paintings tell the stories told to him by his grandmother, mother, aunts and uncles, his own dreaming, and personal experiences. Painting was put in to Gordon and was always around him, he started painting when he was young. Coming from the circle people, Gordon says painting is his job, to pass stories down and... keep the circle going around. Gordon's work has been shown at exhibitions in Brisbane and Toowoomba and features traditional crosshatch, diamonds, and lines, which define where he comes from. The Mani Tribes Artist in Residence Program is supported by the Queensland Government Creative to Go Program.

07.01.2022 Today was full of Aboriginal experiences for the children at St.Pat Catholic School.... Thank you for having us....Was a Pleasure to share our culture....

07.01.2022 Artist of the Month - Dean Horsburgh Dean Horsburgh is a new artist at Mani Tribe’s Gallery How long have you been painting for? ... I started painting two years ago, I started painting in jail and then I came to the gallery and started. I like it, it gets my mind off other stuff. This gallery is like a men’s group for me, you can sit down with mates and have a yarn. How do you decide what you are going to paint? Well that’s the thing, I don’t, I probably get a rough idea when I paint the background and by then, it’s just one piece at a time. If you ask me what I’m going to do next, I couldn’t tell you. But I try to stick to a story. Most of my artwork includes the spirit Baiame, which is the Kamilaroi creator, he’s pretty much our god. How does painting make you feel? It brings my happy side back out, I joke around and laugh. I just joke around when I start painting because I’ve got the right people around. Before I came here, I didn’t talk to anyone, since I’ve been here Gordon’s got me talking to tourists and talking to everyone. It gives me a lot more confidence too, when I first started painting I just sat their and looked at other people’s paintings and I got a bit intimidated, but then once I started getting in to it, my confidence just came back out again. #artistofthemonth #manitribesgallery #stgeorge

05.01.2022 Artist of the Month- Enid Serico Enid Serico is a new artist at Mani Tribe’s Gallery How did you start painting? ... I was addicted to meth for about three years and I was in a very dark place. I knew Gordon and I walked passed one day and I asked Gordon if I could come in and paint. He said yes, he gave me a chance and it’s been 8 weeks since I’ve touched Ice. I did my first painting and it sold in the first 24 hours. How has painting helped you? It brought me back to having a belonging, it brought me back to being part of something, it brought me back to community, it brought me back to being normal. It didn’t stop me using, but painting brought me back to me. Painting gives me awareness of what a community is. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a community, and it feels good to be a part of something again. What’s surprised you most about your work? I was surprised in the community support; how many people were behind me. I was surprised how many people started talking to me. People who didn’t even know me at the shops were saying ‘hello, I saw your painting on Facebook,’ so it’s good to hear that positive feedback from the community. You need it, especially when you’re in the place I am. How do you come up with your ideas? I’ve found I paint things which are symbolic to me. The other day when I was at the hospital, I saw three kangaroos. My next painting is going to be kangaroos because that’s when I admitted I had a problem, so kangaroos symbolise to me my recovery. My painting tells a chapter of my life. #artistofthemonth #manitribesgallery #stgeorge
