01.01.2022 Vitamin C and Skin Health This month we are taking a closer look at Vitamin C and what it does for your skin health. Vitamin C (you might find this written on the ingredients list of your skincare as L-ascorbic acid) is an essential vitamin for tissue repair and must be applied topically in order for your skin to actually reap the benefits. Vitamin C works really closely with your fibroblasts, which are your skin cells responsible for the production of collagen and elastin. T...his in turn supports your skin by providing strength and elasticity for a firmer and plumper dermis. You probably know Vitamin C as a powerful antioxidant, and what this does for the skin is combat free radicals which are unstable molecules created from exposure to UVA rays that damage your skin. That's why using a Vitamin C serum is even more important when living in Australia. Vitamin C also works to put a pause on your melanocytes, which are the cells that cause hyperpigmentation and brown spots. This means that a Vitamin C serum evens out skin tone and will give it a radiant appearance. Packaging is also very important for your Vitamin C as it oxidises very easily. A dark coloured bottle or even better, a pressurised bottle is ideal to preserve the integrity of the ingredients. So you finally got your hands on a Vitamin C serum! Now, what do you do with it? Here are some do’s and don'ts: + We recommend you use Vitamin C in the morning + After you cleanse your skin apply a generous amount to your face and neck and follow up with a moisturiser with SPF of course. + Vitamin C serums can be mixed with your other serums and be applied all at once. + Vitamin A (retinol) is an exception to this; don't use Vitamin C and Vitamin A at the same time.
