24.01.2022 The sea can be a dangerous place. Coast Guard always advises people to think SAFETY FIRST, before going to sea. NEVER buy an old boat without a proper survey. N...EVER go to sea without the required safety gear, the required skills to operate your vessel in any conditions, and the ability to deal with problems if they arise. Your life is at stake if you treat these things lightly. Last week, four elderly folk in their seventies without much nautical experience bought an old converted trawler in Mooloolaba. On Saturday, they decided to motor down to Brisbane in it. They had no real boating experience, they didn't get the boat surveyed before leaving, and the sea was lumpy. When they approached Brisbane, they lost steering and began drifting into the shipping lane. They were unable to anchor, and called Brisbane Coast Guard for help late on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, their radio wasn't working well, and nor could they tell us exactly where they were. But Brisbane Water Police were able to provide a GPS fix on their transmissions, and Brisbane Coast Guard’s J Roster team was able to contact them via mobile phone; and launch two rescue vessels to find them and tow them to a safe berth in Manly Boat Harbour just after dark. This story ended well for these elderly seafarers, thanks to the hard work of Coast Guard volunteers. But it could have so easily ended in tragedy. So, if you’re going to sea, please always remember ... SAFETY FIRST. See more

21.01.2022 Always make sure your boat is properly secured to your trailer, before you attempt to launch or recover it. Elementary, you say? Well, not always. This photo wa...s taken at a boat ramp in Manly Boat Harbour yesterday. Volunteers from nearby Brisbane Coast Guard were quick to assist this ‘distressed vessel’! See more

21.01.2022 Viewers, you’d be surprised how many vessels out there are unmarked, unlabelled or unregistered. When they break loose, drift away or get stolen, no one knows who they belong to. If you value your vessel, please make sure it’s clearly marked with your name and contact details.

17.01.2022 As we prepare for summer make sure your vessel is seaworthy by doing a check list

17.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a reasonable weekend on the water this coming long weekend, 3-5 October 2020. Saturday 3 October: Winds: East to southeasterl...y about 10 knots increasing to 10 to 15 knots in the morning. Seas: Below 1 metre. Weather: Mostly sunny. Sunday 4 October: Winds: Easterly 10 to 15 knots turning northeasterly in the middle of the day. There’s a chance wind speed will increase to 22 knots at some stage. Seas:Below 1 metre. Weather: Partly cloudy. Holiday Monday 5 October: Winds: East to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots. Seas: Below 1 metre. Weather: Partly cloudy. Please remember to always check the weather and have a good look at wind and water conditions before you launch your vessel. 15.01.2022 Weekend Weather, 24 - 25 October 2020. Friday (23 October) was a fairly decent day on the water in South Queensland. But the BOM predicts worse weather ahead fo...r this weekend, particularly on Saturday evening. So check conditions before launching, and make sure your vessel can handle them before putting yourself at risk. Now, here’s what the BOM predicts for this weekend: Saturday 24 October. Winds: Northerly 15 to 20 knots, increasing to 20 to 25 knots in the afternoon and evening. Seas: Around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres in the northern bay later in the evening. Weather: Cloudy. The chance of a thunderstorm from the late morning. Sunday 25 October. Winds: Northerly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning. Weather: Partly cloudy. 80% chance of showers. The chance of a thunderstorm, possibly severe.

15.01.2022 Weekend Weather - 17-18 October 2020. In the days ahead Moreton Bay is forecast for a hot weekend in the mid-to-high 20s and a very high UV index. Saturday 17 O...ctober: Winds: East to northeasterly about 10 knots tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre. Weather: Partly cloudy. Sunday 18 October: Winds: North to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots in the middle of the day and increasing to 20 to 25 knots in the evening. Seas: Around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres in the northern bay during the afternoon. Weather: Mostly sunny day. The chance of a thunderstorm in the southern bay at night. Fun fact: springtime showers are becoming a lot less common around the Bay. In the 1970s, Moreton Bay saw about 27 rainy days during spring - with at least 0.5 millimeters in one day - but now only sees around 22 such rainy days. A similar trend can be seen across Greater Brisbane - for instance, in Logan there are also five fewer rainy days now than in the 1970s

13.01.2022 Brisbane Coast Guard volunteers towed Jessica Watson’s around-the-world yacht Ella’s Pink Lady on its final journey - from Manly Boat Harbour to its permanen...t resting place at the Queensland Maritime Museum - several years ago. At that time, the Maritime Museum was a major Brisbane attraction and appeared solid as a rock. So it was a shock for all concerned to read today’s news ... that the museum will close forever within weeks unless a new sponsor is found or the government steps forward with a rescue plan. 11.01.2022 Maritime Safety Queensland has just issued this IMPORTANT UPDATE to the government’s Recreational Boating regulations: MSQ NOTICE STARTS: Re: Recreational Boati...ng and Queensland Border Intercepts. At 0100 hrs 1 October 2020 , Border Restrictions Direction (No 15) came into effect. Because of the reduced risk of COVID-19 transmission in northern New South Wales, the following changes have been made regarding the border zone: The New South Wales border zone has been extended. The Queensland border zone no longer exists. Queensland residents can travel anywhere in the New South Wales border zone for any purpose. New South Wales border zone residents can travel anywhere in Queensland for any purpose. Persons outside of the NSW Border Zone are still restricted from entering Queensland unless permitted under Border Restriction exemptions. MSQ is QLD's lead agency in managing the maritime borders and is being assisted by enforcement partners QPS in actively patrolling the borders and enforcing restrictions. MSQ's Border Management Team is running 24 hour operations to monitor and intercept maritime traffic crossing Queensland's interstate borders. MSQ is operating a strong intelligence network along the Queensland Coast; skippers are contacted by phone or radio for the number and identity of people on board and are required to provide evidence such as Border Declaration Passes, and proof of identification before gaining permission to enter Queensland waters. They are specifically asked if anyone on board has been in a COVID hotspot in the last 14 days. Tracking history of a vessel's port of origin also shows if they have travelled from a COVID hotspot. From 3 August 2020 - 2 October 2020, 216 vessels have been intercepted, of these, eight Quarantine Notices have been issued where individuals were transported to shore to quarantine within a hotel. Three warning has been issued. Vessels not permitted to enter QLD were turned around by QPS at the request of MSQ MSQ, along with enforcement partners, will continue to actively patrol the maritime border. Further information is available on the Queensland Health website. MSQ MESSAGE ENDS

06.01.2022 It's Blue Blubber time again! In late October every year, when the north and north-easterly winds start blowing, huge numbers of Blue Blubber (Catostylus Mosaic...us) jellyfish turn up in Moreton Bay riding warm water currents, regular as clockwork. They were spotted out in the Bay last week. They'll be around for another month or so. The turtles are happy -- they eat these jellyfish. So do the black rock crabs, and so do some people in Asia. But most Australians don't, because Blue Blubbers have a slight sting to them, which won't cause serious injury but can cause redness and an itchy feeling on some people. If you're one of those, treat the sting by flushing the affected area under hot water. See more

05.01.2022 Congratulations and Happy Birthday to Brisbane Coast Guard (based in Manly Boat Harbour). This award-winning Flotilla turns 47 today. Here’s a newspaper story from 2013 which explains how it started life. We should note that the Flotilla Commander is now Craig Bowen from Wynnum.
