07.01.2022 HOT WEATHER WEEKEND Over the next couple of days, the weather is going to hot, with temperatures heading well into the 30s Pets don't sweat like humans, therefore they find it harder to regulate their temperatures on these hot days The brachycephalic breeds, eg pugs, french bulldogs, aussie bulldogs, boston terriers, boxers, shih tzu's, persian cats, british shorthairs - just to name a few - find it extra hard to keep cool because of their shortened facial features.... Here are some tips to keep your pets cool this weekend * Don't leave your dog alone in the car on a warm day, even if the windows are open. The inside of cars act like an oven temperatures can rise to dangerously high levels in a matter of minutes. * Avoid exercise on warm and humid days, especially during the middle of the day * Avoid walking on hot asphalt as this can burn their pawpads. It would be equivalent to us walking on the hot ground without any shoes on * When outside, opt for shady areas * Provide plenty of fresh cool water available at all times * Provide frozen treats * If your pet likes the water, proved kiddy pools with cool water to let them a dip into * If you have air-con, bring them inside. If no air-con, fans Signs of heat stress include * Excessive panting * Excessive drooling * Agititation * Restlessness * Changes in their gum colour If you are concerned that you pet is affected, please contact the clinic on 9907.6666 If the clinic is closed, please contact Northside Emergency Vet Service on 9452.2933
02.01.2022 Tick Season is well & truly here Here at Manly Vet Clinic, we have already treated at least 4 patients that have had tick paralysis this season. At NEVS (our emergency service), they have seen a lot more patients. Please be vigilant and keep up to date with your pet's tick prevention, eg Bravecto, and doing daily checks of your pets.... Even if you don't go to bushy areas, possums & bandicoots can drop them into your yard when they go roaming. Although most ticks are found around the head and neck, they can be found anywhere on your pet. Check in the beard, ears, wound the eyes, between toes and around the anal area. Ticks do like to hide and can be tricky to find sometimes so it is important to check every lump & bump If you are concerned and not sure what you are looking for, please don't hesitate to contact the clinic on 9907.6666 We are happy to help
