02.01.2022 Vale Mary Elizabeth Patchett It is with great sadness we share the passing of Mary Patchett over the Christmas period. Mary was a valued community member and one of the original Moreton Bay Discovery Centre & Museum Committee members. ... She initially chaired the steering committee that developed into the Moreton Bay Discovery Centre in 2004-5 before handing over to her son Michael. The Moreton Bay Discovery Centre was a shared vision with the Moreton Bay Alliance, Bayside Creek Catchment Group and the Manly Harbour Village Chamber of Commerce Inc. We honour this amazing lady for her service and contribution to Moreton Bay and our wonderful Brisbane Bayside community. Sincere condolences and thanks to Mary's family. We also share the following beautiful words and photo from Joan Pease: "The Bayside community lost one of its proudest environmental champions over the Christmas period. Mary Patchett joined the Wynnum-Manly community in the early 1990’s with a cottage on Moreton Avenue. As a trained nurse, caring for others was always her strength. When Mary moved to the Bayside, she began looking after Moreton Bay and our natural environment with that same passion. A prominent campaigner, she could count the stopping of coral dredging around Green Island, the creation of Moreton Bay Marine Park and the cessation of sand mining on North Stradbroke Island as some of her key successes. Through the Moreton Bay Environmental Alliance and Bay Care News, Mary connected and informed groups and individuals concerned about the Bay, moulding them into a collective force to be reckoned with. Educating young people on the need to protect the Bay was a priority of Mary’s, as was supporting local initiatives like the Pelican and Seabird Rescue. A lifelong environmental advocate, feisty campaigner, animal lover, avid gardener and proud woman, Mary’s boundless energy was an inspiration to many. Mary is survived by 3 children and 11 grandchildren who will continue her legacy with a shared passion for the natural environment."
