04.01.2022 Today we remember and pay tribute to Private Kenneth Howard Gant. Known as Kenny, Gant was born on 6 January 1945 in Brisbane to Harold and Beryl Gant. He grew up on the family property at Belmont and attended school locally. Later, he went to work as a butcher. Gant was popular in town. He was a good singer, entertaining at local parties, and his friends gave him the nickname Bing. Gant was called up for service on 30 June 1965. His mother later recalled that he did not ...like the idea of conscription, as there were already so many regular soldiers around, but he was not a coward and did his duty. At that time he had not heard of Vietnam. Gant underwent training at the 3rd Training Battalion in Singleton and the infantry centre in Ingleburn before being posted to the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. He joined 11 Platoon, D Company. The men undertook exercises at Canungra and Shoalwater Bay training areas. During one exercise at Tin Can Bay, local trawler men invited the men of D Company to a dinner at a nearby hotel. A local band was playing, and Gant was invited to take the stage, singing Roy Orbison’s Leah. His performance apparently brought the house down, and the band had some trouble getting their stage back. Read more here >>https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C2133837

02.01.2022 Friday drinks at the Presidents bar, see you all there.

02.01.2022 Today we remember and pay tribute to 4RAR Private Joseph Ramsey, aged 22, originally from Catrine, Scotland, was a carpenter prior to being called up for National Service on 17 April 1967. He sailed with the Battalion for South Vietnam in May 1968. Joe was the machine gunner in 1 Section, 10 Platoon and earned himself a reputation for not wasting ammunition when on 21 July 1968 he and his Number Two, Private Sammy Graham, allowed two VC to get within ten metres of his barrel ...before opening fire. The ammunition belt twisted and Joe was only able to fire one round before the gun jammed but the single bullet resulted in two enemy dead and the capture of two enemy weapons. During Operation GOODWOOD in Bien Hoa Province on 31 January 1969, 10 Platoon contacted an enemy force in a bunker system and during the firefight Joe was killed along with his 1 Section forward scout, Sammy Graham (who had previously been Joe's Number Two on the machine gun), and three others were wounded.
