22.01.2022 Council sees "no obligation" to provide pre-school services when the private sector can do that. So, let's compare!...

21.01.2022 Dear Friends, These are challenging times for all of us, including families, pre-school and childcare workers and school teachers and staff. The situation is changing day by day and more and more restrictions are being put into effect. However, not enough is being done amid rising cases of coronavirus in Australia. We are familiar with the arguments for keeping schools, pre-schools and child care centres open essential workers may have to stay home or kids may have to be lo...oked after by grandparents but what about the risk to staff and kids? If we are to assume that kids can pass on the virus to grandparents if schools were closed, then if schools are not closed kids are just as likely to bring the virus home to their families, who, in turn, will pass it on to the grandparents among others. From a health perspective, it does not make sense to keep sending our kids to mingle in large groups that bring people from a wide range of localities into one place and then send them back to potentially spread contagion. For individual parents, it is like a coronavirus Russian roulette! For the community, it is playing with fire. Do we wait until an out of control wildfire is set off before we tell people to stop playing with matches? The only responsibility we have is to the health of the members of our community that’s our families, care workers and teachers and others and of course our children. Tell your pre-school, childcare centre, school and local council that, in the interests of all of us, we need to CLOSE NOW and STAY HOME to beat coronavirus! See more

17.01.2022 The study's conclusions "show the importance of childhood exposure to natural spaces for the development of a nature-appreciating attitude and a healthy psychological state in adulthood".

13.01.2022 This is great news for Ivanhoe Park and we welcome this announcement of State Heritage Protection. However, Ivanhoe Park Pre-school will NOT be protected. In fact, if Council goes ahead with its plans to close the pre-school at the start of next year and demolish the building, then the heritage protection of the park will mean that they cannot build there in future and the opportunity to have a pre-school situated where children need to be (in nature) will be lost for good. So, it is even more imperative to press for Council to save this pre-school in its present location while we still can!

11.01.2022 Manly Council wants to talk As many of you know, we have been distributing our Newsletter, talking with parents and other efforts to build support for the campaign to SAVE IVANHOE PARK PRE-SCHOOL!!! We have been contacted by the Children's Services branch of Northern Beaches Council, who said they would like to meet with us to discuss Manly's Ivanhoe Park Pre-school. We welcome this response and look forward to meeting with the Children's Services in the next two weeks and discussing the many important issues.

09.01.2022 "My Little Paradise!" That's how one little girl refers to Manly’s Ivanhoe Park Pre-school, her mum told us last week. "It's Idyllic!", said another parent. "This is why we chose Ivanhoe -- kids need this!" These are just some of the passionate responses we received from parents while distributing the newsletter at Ivanhoe last Thursday (2-day group) and today (3-day group). A lot of people were keen to add their contact details to the email list and there was a very positive energy and a lot of passion for keeping the pre-school open. Let's keep the fight going and SAVE IVANHOE PARK PRE-SCHOOL for the benefit of future generations and for the good of our community!

07.01.2022 "No matter the situation we are in, we owe it to our children..." "The current statistics say that the average child only gets 4-7 minutes of outdoor free play every day. This means that the average child is probably outside for 30 minutes or so a few times a week."

07.01.2022 This month we met with the heads of Northern Beaches Council's Children's Services after they approached us for a meeting. Many arguments were put to us about why the closure of Manly’s Ivanhoe Park Pre-School site is a necessary and done deal. Everything from "we haven't budgeted to keep it open beyond this year" to the risk from Ivanhoe's 'contraversial' creek in the event of a one-in-a-hundred-year flood. One argument that did not sit well was that, in any case, Council ha...s no obligation under legislation to provide pre-school services and that these services could just as easily be provided by the private sector -- a position, we were told, that had support on Council. This confirmed our fears going into this meeting that behind the arguments about costs and water courses, is a deeper ideological position that supports an agenda of offloading subsidised, affordable public pre-school services to the private sector who will charge their prohibitive fees and offer an inferior service. So, apparently, Council has no objection to closing Ivanhoe and equally has no objection to the private sector taking a greater role in the future in the provision of pre-school services. Well, then, why don't we take a look at things on the ground!... Follow the link below to see the vids when we compared a new private development in North Manly with what we are about to lose in Ivanhoe Park... https://www.facebook.com/1899525310146243/posts/2274839659281471/

07.01.2022 Is Manly Council in the business of closing Council-run pre-schools? That's the burning question on our minds as we prepare to meet with Council on Friday. It has been suggested to us that Council wants to offload the provision of pre-school services to the private sector. This would save the Council money and give a boost to private pre-school providers by removing the cheaper 'competitor'. But what about families? -- Families whose rates have just been increased by Council -- Don't we have a right to expect Council to provide basic services to our community? Politics aside, we just want to save this unique pre-school, situated in a rare, but idyllic natural environment, which children need for healthy bodies and minds.

03.01.2022 In the fight to stop Northern Beaches Council from closing and bulldozing Manly’s hidden gem of a pre-school, we heard some impassioned concerns from parents... What parents told us: * despite the building being unrenovated and neglected, many Ivanhoe parents preferred and chose Ivanhoe over the much more modern alternative of Kangaroo Street. Why? Because of its idyllic setting in nature. Parents recognise how valuable this is -- why doesn't Council? Or do they?... * despite management recently saying that they are "not at full capacity", so therefore there is not enough demand to justify keeping the pre-school open, several parents told us that when they applied to Ivanhoe, they were told that there weren't any places and they had to wait for someone to leave before they were offered a place -- how many went and enrolled somewhere else? -- how many were put off from applying in the first place by the reports since 2015 that the pre-school is closing? How many more could benefit from this service being kept open when we have recently had a reduction in other services in the area (like St Matt's) and the only alternative is inferior and over priced long day care. Why does it seem that Council does not feel obligated to maintain this vital service to the community? -- Especially when they have just increased rates! * The main word was "shame": "It's such a shame" to lose such a wonderful pre-school; it's a shame Council don't see the value in keeping the pre-school and the kids in this natural setting; and shame on them for wanting to close this pre-school which is loved by so many, past and present.
