24.01.2022 Posted @withregram @jamesgriffinmp Never been prouder. $19.5 million - fully funded. An Australian first to be built on the former Manly Hospital site. Designs complete. Construction starting early next year. ... The designs have been completed. The Hospice is now fully-funded. And construction will commence early next year. The challenges in caring for a young person with an incurable illness are immense. There are countless heartbreaking situations that young people and their families find themselves in because there has been no dedicated Centre - anywhere in Australia - for them to turn to. Despite these challenges, there was a vision. A vision created by families and passionate community members who knew there was a better way. Today, with the completion of the designs and finalisation of funding, that vision becomes reality. There are so many people to thank who have made this project a reality. More to come.

20.01.2022 Posted @withregram @sim.photog No, it’s not a Wookiee. It’s a Fur Seal! A large male fur seal at that according to the lovely ORCA volunteer I spoke to at Manly Beach today. He was apparently at Collaroy on Friday. You need to keep 50m away from them and never get between them and the ocean. I took this just after 4pm today zooming in to 300mm from behind the red cones . 17.01.2022 HORROR START TO SPRING FOR LITTLE MANLY PENGUINS A fox has been trapped at Collins Beach, North Head, which is home to Manlys threatened Little Penguin colony. Recently, at least five Little Penguins have been found dead or fatally injured in the area.... One appears to have been struck by a boat propeller at Manly Cove; a juvenile penguin was found drowned; the remaining three were killed by predators, two of which are confirmed fox kills. Member for Manly James Griffin has expressed his sadness and concern at the threat to the colony of Little Penguins at Manly. I am truly devastated on behalf of National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) staff and our amazing volunteer Penguin Wardens, who together protect breeding areas year round. Sadly, despite all the work that has and is being done, the threats to our native wildlife can never be entirely eliminated. This is why we must be ever vigilant to protect our penguins, said Mr Griffin. Mr Griffin outlined a number of ongoing activities by NPWS and volunteers to protect the Little Penguin colony, including: 1080 poison baiting, increasing when a fox is detected Scent detection dogs used early in the breeding season Soft jaw traps used prior to breeding season Computer controlled fox lights to mimic patrols at night Fauna monitoring cameras Penguin Warden volunteers who protect breeding areas Members of the public who would like to assist can volunteer to be a Penguin Warden via the NPWS website or by calling 02 9960 6266. Thank you to the @northernbeachesadvocate for the above summation. Image: taken from the 2015 Save Little Manly Penguins campaign page

16.01.2022 The Transport Minister Andrew Constance and Manly MP James Griffin have announced one of the larger ferries will remain in use but only on weekends and public holidays. These pictures (of the ferry to be retained on weekends and the emerald class to replace the rest) and the following statement was released by @jamesgriffinmp in the last hour: Ferry update: Freshwater Ferry will service Manly every weekend, year round and on Public Holidays. The new Emerald Class will s...ervice commuters during the week. The Emerald Class has: - outdoor seating - carries 400 - green and gold. - Two wide walk-around decks - Accessibility for the less mobile and young families - Bicycle and luggage storage - Wi-fi access - Real time journey information - 12 wheelchair spaces - Rapid and safe boarding - Reduced travel times You can learn more about the boat here: http://www.beyondthewharf.com.au/emerald-class/ What happens to the other Freshwater Class ferry? Planning is continuing into the future use of the remaining three vessels and at the appropriate time, the NSW Government will consult with private tourism and heritage operators, who are interested in operating and maintaining the Freshwater ferries. I realise some people will be unhappy about this compromise.

11.01.2022 Hi all, not sure there has been much added here but obviously the consultation period is about the begin so its worth resharing this update from June with comments from James Griffin MP, Member for Manly and the Mayor today: https://www.facebook.com/1324582714254684/posts/3388654371180831/... 10.01.2022 Fair warning, there’s a pot plant mocking all of us carrying covid kilos along Ashburner Street in Manly today.

10.01.2022 Delighted that the Beaches community is still hungry for local news, and I am starting to get the message that @manlyobserver is worth continuing. Given my email was flooded (exaggeration but work with me here, it was double digits) with requests for word docs of stories from non Facebook users, and Instagram has a very short word count, I’ve decided to put all of the stories on a website over coming weeks. Social media will remain the primary platform. ... Thanks to all of you for your role in keeping the fourth estate alive. Likes, shares and constructive feedback is currently the only income for our efforts so give them generously. 09.01.2022 The Brookvale Community Centre is now home to a new street art work by local artist Kentaro Yoshida, Council has informed us. The commission is part of their Street Art Program, which is creating a collection of street art and murals across the Northern Beaches. The vibrant work reflects the close connection the Centre has with the local Tibetan community, the largest of its kind in Australia.... The mural also references the Centre’s purpose of welcoming and providing outreach services to the broader community and to people of many diverse backgrounds. Based on the traditional graphic style of Japanese (manga) comics, Yoshida’s artworks at the Community Centre feature images of the Waratah (NSW’s state flower) and the Rhododendron (the national flower of Tibet). In one mural, the Waratah is dancing with the Sun, which depicts joy, the feeling people get when they come to this community centre, and in the other mural, the Rhododendron, together with some native Australian animals, is being embraced by the moon, which signifies comfort, the feeling people have when they are settling down in a new community. These concepts are all about helping each other to come together to grow and protect the community.

07.01.2022 This evening (August 26) the new Manly Business Chamber executive committee, council staff, Manly MP James Griffin and Mayor Michael Regan discussed the dire state of Manlys trade thanks to the relentless misfortune that is 2020. "We are going to have to think a lot about whats next for Manly after the Coronavirus," said one business representative, Blair, addressing James Griffin and Michael Regan. "We are seeing a lot of tenants really struggling, business is down 75 per ...cent in some cases what have you got planned?" James Griffin said the recently formed Recovery Taskforce was going to look at short, medium and long-term ways to revitalise Manly businesses. "I go out from my office in Manly for a lunch break and I look around in despair at a lot of vacant properties.. and I think, heaven forbid if we face any more challenges." "There is work underway to bring together a plan towards recovery," he reassured the chamber members, adding the Premier would also be directly involved. (We have previously referenced this taskforce on Manly Observer - look for the ridiculous Power Rangers image on our feed for more info, or ask in the comments if you want to know more.) Mayor Regan and various Council staff said there were campaigns planned to capture the domestic tourist market, as well as potential rebranding and Covid-safe events on the horizon. "Though we are not out of the woods yet and while the long term is important, right now is more of an issue of survival, we have got to get through the next six months, thats our priority," the Mayor said. Manly Business Chamber is an organisation which works to unite, build and promote Manly businesses, connecting them to various levels of government. They are on social media and at manly.org.au

05.01.2022 Virtual Festival, and all that Jazz - the following is an unedited media release from.l @beachescouncil - One of the Northern Beaches most popular annual events is set to get a digital makeover, with the Manly Jazz Festival going virtual in the October Labour Day long weekend.... The digital initiative will again connect inspire and entertain local and global communities while health restrictions during COVID-19 temporarily prevent large crowds congregating. Mayor Michael Regan said Manly Jazz was one of the highlights of Councils events calendar which attracted thousands of jazz lovers to the iconic beach sands of Manly. We might not be able to get together this year, but we can still enjoy some incredible artists on the dedicated Manly Jazz Festival website, Cr Regan said. While we cannot welcome audiences to a live performance this year, we are committed to offering the best in entertainment, arts, and culture online. Behind the scenes the team, including the Manly Jazz Festival committee is working hard to secure artists and the program will be announced shortly. I hope this new digital format of a much-loved event will connect, inspire and comfort people during this challenging time, he said.
