12.01.2022 Tip of the week- starting this week, Manly tennis centre will be presenting a tip of the week. Tip #1 Forehand Preparation... The Forehand is one of the most important shots in tennis. Its the first shot you probably tried, and the one you use the most. Like any groundstroke, how you prepare for it, is the key to success. 1) Footwork- how quickly you get into position will determine your options. The most common mistake I see is flat feet at the opponents contact. You need to be on your toes, with even balance in order to have fast 1st steps. Lower your centre of gravity as you move to the ball for better balance at contact 2) Shoulder turn- Most beginner and intermediate players try and turn their shoulders when the ball is almost upon them. As you can see in all these photos, the shoulders are turned long before the ball is in shot. The pros often turn their shoulders towards the ball, before they take their first step. Work on turn then step. Open up both your hips and shoulders on the backswing. 3) Racket preparation- if your shoulders turn early, your racket will already be moving back to the right position. A common mistake is to bring the racket back with the elbow still tucked into the body. Notice in these pictures that all these great players push their elbow out and back as they bring racket back. You want the racket back and shoulders turned before the ball bounces in front of you, if you have time. 4) Racket head positioning- As you can see that all players bring their racket back above their wrist. The angle above the wrist does vary, but its important it sits above the wrist for a few reasons. Firstly, its more comfortable for the wrist to sit in that position, than it is parallel to wrist or below the wrist. This enables you to keep the racket head quiet on backswing. A common mistake with backswings is to have the racket moving all over the place as its being readied to hit the shot. Secondly, it allows you to generate racket head speed, and therefore power, as you drop the racket head down for forward swing. Lastly, it enables you to easier deal with topspin or higher trajectory balls, than a low backswing would Work on these corrections, focusing on one at a time, and watch your forehand improve noticeably. Good luck- Michael Tebbutt For further instruction dont hesitate to contact any of our coaches.
