24.01.2022 Schoolies: Respecting Boundaries Following on from our post on Wednesday, we want to discuss respecting people’s boundaries... There may be times either during schoolies or elsewhere, that you meet someone who doesn’t quite take ‘no’ for an answer. ... They may push you into doing something for many reasons. Examples can be that they could just want you to have ‘fun’, they don’t want to do something alone, they think you really do want to join in, or unfortunately, they’re doing it for their own needs. These people aren’t necessarily strangers either, they can be your friends, family, or other people you know. It’s important for everyone to not only respect but accept each other’s boundaries. Everyone has their own way of having fun, whether it’s drinking alcohol or drinking soft drink, taking drugs or choosing not too, having sex or wanting to hang out instead. Whatever it may be, you should not force someone into doing something they aren’t okay with doing. Wearing someone down into saying yes or complying, is coercion not consent. If you feel like someone is pressuring you into something, look back at our ‘how to say no’ post! You can be firm with the person, or leave the situation and go where you feel safe and comfortable. If you see someone who seems as though they’re being pressured into doing something, step in and help them out. You can repeat that they don’t want to do it, start a new conversation, or take that person somewhere they feel safe. #manninghamyouthservices #schoolies #coercionisnotconsent *image description in comments

19.01.2022 Schoolies: Keeping Safe Following on from our Wednesday post on AOD, we wanted to take today to discuss the main theme of our schoolies series- your safety. However you decide to celebrate, it’s important to keep your safety and others safety in mind. ... We thought we’d give some tips on how to keep yourself and others safe! Few other things to keep in mind If you’re going away somewhere, look into taxi services around that area. Usually in rural/semi rural places they don’t have the same Uber/Taxi accessibility as the city. If you’re going away pack a first aid kit! You never know when you might need it. Do a quick search on nearest hospitals just in case. As always, if you begin to feel unsafe or that people are pushing your boundaries- leave and go somewhere you feel safe! Check out @alcoholdrugfdn for all info alcohol and drugs! @familyplanningvictoria also has everything you need to know about sexual health! Including contraception options, STI facts, LGBTIQA+ specific, and more. #manninghamyouthservice #schoolies #safetyplan *image description in comments
18.01.2022 Self-Care Saturday This week Simone decided to take a note from one of our YAC members, Troy! One of Troy’s favourite self-care go-to is trying out a new recipe, as it can help keep you creative. Did you know that there are actually positive mental benefits to cooking??... It’s been said that cooking or baking not only gives us something yummy to eat, but it boosts our self esteem and confidence. It’s also fulfilling if we share our food with others! This helps strengthen our sense of closeness, purpose, and meaning. Simone definitely felt her self esteem get a little boost after she finally tried a recipe she’s been thinking of for ages!! Comment if you liked this weeks tip! #manninghamyouthservices #selfcaresaturday #cookies Image Description: Video that’s edited and pans from ingredients, to the process of making cookies, once cookies are baked the camera pans to a dog wanting to eat one.

10.01.2022 Schoolies: How to Say ‘No’ Over the next couple weeks we’ll be posting some info and resources on keeping safe during schoolies! With end of year celebrations coming up, easing of covid restrictions, and warmer weather we understand everyone deserves to relax and have fun after a tough year. However your safety is always our priority! So keep an eye out for our posts, and if you have any questions feel free to DM us! During schoolies you may be faced with experiences... that may or may not leave you feeling uncomfortable doing, such as drugs, alcohol, and sex. It’s important that prior to attending these celebrations you know what your limits are and what you’re comfortable in wanting to experience. This way you’re ensuring you get to make a clear decision to meet your own needs/wants, and not somebody else’s. If there’s some situations you know you aren’t comfortable in experiencing, it can be quite confronting when you’re faced with it in the moment. Saying ‘no’ may sound so simple, but sometimes it’s a really difficult thing to do! Why is that?? We may feel like we’re letting someone down or disappointing them by saying ‘no’. Maybe we’re worried we’ll make them angry, or that they won’t give up asking so it’s easier to say ‘yes’. Or sometimes we’re concerned we’ll come across as rude, negative or boring! But by saying ‘yes’ when we really want to say ‘no’, we aren’t meeting our own needs. Remember: It is not your job to please somebody else! Be a good friend! If your friend says ‘no’, make sure they feel safe and comfortable and aren’t being forced into a situation they don’t want. #manninghamyouthservices #schoolies #howtosayno *image description in comments
07.01.2022 Self-Regulation Saturday Yesterday we gave a few tips on getting through exam periods somewhat stress free. One of our tips was to focus on breathing So... why do people always say to just ‘breathe’? ... Breathing is an automatic function of the body that’s controlled by the respiratory centre of the brain. When we begin to feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed (because of exams looming, abundance of content to study...) our ‘fight or flight’ response is triggered, which then changes our breathing rate and pattern. Typically this makes our breathing more shallow and small. Shallow breathing or hyperventilation can prolong feelings of stress and anxiety. (You following us so far?) But! We can interrupt this feeling simply by taking slow, deep and controlled breaths. By ‘focussing’ on our breathing, we increase oxygen to our brain which calms our nervous system. There’s many breathing techniques, Simone has demonstrated the ‘Box Breathing’ technique in this video! Make sure you’re seated comfortably and preferably in a quiet environment. Breathe deeply into your stomach to make it expand like a balloon. Try to do this for 5min to get the full affect. YouTube ‘box breathing’ to follow along to other videos. If you’ve tried this, let us know your thoughts! If you’ve read this far leave a in the comments! #manninghamyouthservices #boxbreathing Image Description: Video of Simone demonstrating box breathing. Breathing in for 4seconds, holding for 4 seconds, breathing out for 4 seconds, holding for 4 seconds and repeat.

03.01.2022 Self-Care Saturday This Saturday we wanted to highlight the many different ways you can practice self care! By focussing on what our body is needing each day we are in fact practicing caring for ourself ... This can be in the forms of going for a walk if your body is needing movement, having a nap if you’re feeling tired, journaling if you’ve got a busy mind, or having a catch up with a friend. Try coming up with a list of your own of what self care looks like for you in a physical, personal, social, and spiritual way #manninghamyouthservices #saturdayselfcare #doodledwellness Image Description: Image split into four squares, with each square listing examples of self care. Top left is pastel yellow with examples for physical self care, top right is pastel pink with examples for personal, bottom right is pastel blue with examples for social, and bottom left is pastel green with examples for spiritual.
03.01.2022 Schoolies: Community & Surroundings Our final week in our schoolies series, we highlight the importance of respecting and being aware of the community and your surroundings. Whether you’re going away to someone’s holiday house, an Airbnb or motel, or going interstate to have fun- it’s important to be mindful of and respect your surroundings! ... Leave the place as it was when you arrived. Throw out your rubbish, make sure nothing is vandalised or trashed. If the place is trashed, damaged or vandalised you may not get your security deposit back, and may possibly face charges. Remember, you’ll be 18 and legally considered an adult. Keep the noise levels down, check the local laws to see what time you should have all music turned off by. If there is excessive noise, police may be called and attend the party to speak to you about this. Being mindful of what you post on socials. It’s fine to share that you’re having fun with your friends... BUT remember, whatever is on the Internet is forever. Even Snapchat. You’ll be entering into adult life with future employers looking you up on socials, think about what you’d want them to see. You may think we sound like every other adult in your life BUT there’s a reason we say this! It’s important to have these fresh in your mind when making decisions #manninghamyouthservices #schoolies #respectingcommunity *image description in comments.
02.01.2022 Schoolies: and Toolies In our last post of our schoolies series we talk about those people to look out for You may have heard the word ‘toolies’ get thrown around but who or what exactly are they?? ... ‘Toolies’ is the label given to people who are above the school leavers age and aren’t at Schoolies celebrations to celebrate the end of school. Instead, they’re usually there to target younger people for sex, drugs, and cause disturbances (such as brawls, vandalism, etc). Basically, people you need to watch out for and stay away from. While they may be over the school leavers age, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should be on the look out for 50 year olds! These people are often in their 20s and over, and could easily be that person who is ‘a friend of a friend’, or ‘the relative of someone’. What can you look out for? Schoolies venues will have attendees wearing wristbands... But sometimes attendees sell their wristbands to toolies. Trust your gut, if you think they’re older they probably are. If you see a fight, vandalism, or any other dangerous behaviour leave the area immediately and go somewhere safe. Stay in well lit areas. Check out @redfrogsau and the amazing work they do to keep you safe during Schoolies! #manninghamyouthservices #schoolies #toolies *image description in comments
02.01.2022 Schoolies: Alcohol and Other Drugs This week in our schoolies series is alcohol and other drugs (AOD). Keep an eye out on our Friday post as we discuss how to keep yourself safe when using AOD. ... Before going out to celebrate and have fun, remember to check in with your boundaries and what you would/wouldn’t like to experience. We recommend always asking what is in whatever you’re about to consume.Because unfortunately, if you haven’t seen it made or haven’t made it yourself, you don’t know what is actually in the alcohol/drugs you’re about to consume. Drugs are categorised by the affect they have on our bodies, there are a number of categories however we will be covering the three main ones: depressants, stimulants, and hallucinogens. Depressants: While they don’t necessarily make us feel ‘depressed’, they mainly slow down your central nervous system. This affects your concentration, coordination, and ability to respond to what’s happening around you. They can make you feel calm, relaxed, sleepy, or cause vomiting, nausea and unconsciousness. Examples are alcohol, benzos (valium), cannabis, GHB, ketamine and opioids (heroin, morphine, codeine). Stimulants: This is the opposite of a depressant, they speed up messages between your brain and body. This causes your heart to beat faster, your blood pressure to rise, agitation, and sleeplessness. They can make you feel more awake, alert and confident, or it can cause anxiety, paranoia, stomach cramps, and seizures. Examples are amphetamines (ICE and speed), caffeine (yep! caffeine is a drug!), cocaine, ecstasy (MDMA), nicotine/tobacco. Hallucinogens: Changes your sense of reality, can create hallucinations. This also distorts your senses (tough, sight, smell, taste, hearing). They may make you disorientated, confused, and dizzy, or hallucinations, memory loss, anxiety, paranoia, and aggression. Examples are cannabis, ketamine, LSD, PCP, magic mushrooms. If you or someone you know suspect an overdose call 000 IMMEDIATELY. For more info feel free to DM us or check out ‘Alcohol and Drug Foundation’ website. #manninghamyouthservices #schoolies #aod
