17.01.2022 **WHAT’S IN A TOOTH? Understanding what makes up our teeth can go a long way towards helping us understand why we get toothaches, how we can keep teeth healthy, and when a dentist’s help may be needed. Patient education is very important to us at Manning Valley Dental. 1. OUTER PROTECTIVE LAYERS - Above the gum line we have enamel, which is a highly mineralised complex of crystal structures that is reinforced by #fluoride , # calcium and #phosphate (sound familiar ?). Thes...e can be found in #toothpaste and #toothmousse .Enamel has the best resistance against bacteria and acid i.e #dentalcaries. When our teeth lose enamel they are vulnerable to #decay, #sensitivity and #colourchange. Below the gums we have #CEMENTUM which allows teeth to stay firmly in place within our jaw as well as protecting the inner layers of tooth. 2. INNER LAYER -#Dentine is our inner tooth layer and is formed by a complex of less minerals, more organic matter and tubules. Yes tubes! Tubes that are packed full of #nerveendings. When we lose enamel /cementum we expose these tubes and their nerves to the hot/cold things we put in our mouth, hence #dentalsensitivity. Dentine is less resistant to bacteria and acid than enamel. 3. ROOT CANALS: Everyone’s heard of a root canal treatment, but what the heck does that even mean? Just like the bones in our body, our teeth have a blood and nervous supply. This network of vessels and receptors lives inside the ROOT CANAL. We refer to this living bundle of blood vessels and nerve fibres as the #PULP. When a toothache gets really bad, we need to flush out and clean the root canal system just like you would a clogged pipe (more on this later). This is called #rootcanaltherapy and is an alternative to having the tooth removed. TAKE HOME MESSAGE ** Our teeth are alive and not replaceable just like other bits of our body, treat them kindly #dentaleducation #dentaltips #bekindtoyourteeth #manningvalleydental #taree #comics #dentaladvice
