16.01.2022 Flexibility Tips at home: I am reaching out to all parents of competitive athletes, I am a parent myself and understand how difficult things may be now. Being ...stuck at home not only you have to substitute teachers but also might have to become temporary coaches for your children. I am a bit concerned thinking our kids try to train at home, it’s great if they try to stay in shape, but on the other hand they might develop bad habits that are really hard to break after. Especially at a younger age our bodies don’t have a long memory and the training it used to do, therefore everything they trained is easily forgotten over a short period of time. I just wanted to share some tips on flexibility that you can easily apply when you watch your child trying to stretch at home. 1. Warm Up- Make sure she/he warms up before stretching, some suggestions: Skipping, running with knees up, Hamstring curls, walking lunges, pike walks, light kicks. 2. While stretching: check alignment -when in splits, check for square hips and shoulders, front leg turned out, back knee facing the floor. For middle split- check that the hips and toes are on the same line. Bridge - always stretch your back slowly before going into the bridge, watch shoulders over wrists, elbows straight, fingers facing the feet. Pike stretch- folding in the hip line, keeping the back as flat as possible, and spine long. Head should lengthen to continue the line. Try to cue your kids, watch for these big mistakes. 3. Time- athlete should put in minimum 30 min a/day to stretch all areas with focus on 2-3 / day. Time your child, remember, in most cases, the longer in the position the better the result ( minimal is 30 seconds static hold) 4. If there are on going injuries and physio exercises, they should be done before the flexibility. 5. Always finish stretching with dynamic flexibility, such as kicks, in all directions - front, side, back, needle kicks. 6. Make a chart at home where they can check what they have done, You can get my chart example from my FB page or I just posted one on my instagram #ballet4sports. Each area of the body should be covered at least twice/week.
