14.01.2022 TAKU RKAU (Oh my weapon) Takahi was a famous Thoe rangatira who in his day successfully defended his people’s lands against the incursions of other iwi. Th...is waiata tangi by an unknown composer laments his death. There is complex imagery. Oh my weapon Oh my weapon that now lies in the house! Takahi is gone from the house of the kahiktoa. Hau and you others, if attacked and stranded, Be stranded like a white shark out in the ocean! I send no greeting, I do not weep for you. The people are silent, the land lies desolate. The poet first speaks metaphorically of Takahi himself; he is the ‘weapon’ who no longer goes forth to defend his people. In line 2, the expression ‘te whare o te kahiktoa’ (the house of the kahiktoa) refers figuratively to military activity, for kahiktoa is another name for the mnuka tree, the hard wood of which was much used for weapons such as spears. The identity of Hau and his companions is unknown. The great white shark is by far the largest and most feared of the predatory sharks. Several sayings (whakatauk), in expressing the idea that it is best for a warrior to die fighting valiantly in battle, name the white shark as the example to follow. One such saying, for example, contrasts the white shark with the tarakihi a fish which, though it does fight vigorously when hooked, cannot harm its human enemies because of its small size: Kia mate ururoa ttou, kei mate--tarakihi. Let us die like white sharks, not tarakihi. Lines 3 and 4 of this song express a similar sentiment in more specialised language. There is at the same time an image relating to stranding. In traditional Mori thought, creatures or objects lying stranded and broken on the shore (whether whales, seaweed, driftwood, broken waka or old fishing nets) have been removed from their proper realm and rendered powerless. In death, both the warrior and the white shark are, metaphorically speaking, stranded. (The ocean is mentioned here as being the usual, and proper, home of the white shark.) The next line again follows convention. In other waiata tangi also, poets declare that they will not send greetings (mihi), or weep apparently, because the warrior mourned has fallen in battle. This was considered the best death for a warrior; and the mourners knew that, because their relative had been killed by enemies, there would always be in the future even if they had to wait many years the chance that his death could be avenged. Revenge is more satisfying than poetic lamentation. With Takahi gone, the people are listless and the land lies lonely and desolate. Credit to kino Hughes
