19.01.2022 Kangaroo paw update: I shared some pictures back in early April this year of a lovely Australian native garden on the Central Coast NSW featuring kangaroo paws.... There were two paws side by side that were relatively the same size. Both had finished flowering and were looking rather scrappy with lots of brown leaves and dead flower stems. This is the time of year when many people think their paw is diseased, dead or dying. In most cases, the plant has used a lot of energy flowering through the warmer months and just needs a good cut back, some fertiliser and water to help it rejuvenate. The pictures I’ve posted above show the benefits of doing this. The picture labelled April is two of the kangaroo paws side by side. The one on the left had just had a cut back. The one on the right was left alone. The picture labelled October shows the same plants six months later. The paw which received the cut back has at least doubled in size with lush green growth and has over 25 flower stems. The one on the right (next to the flannel flower) which didn’t get cut back has minimal new growth and has only managed to produce six small flower stems. Cutting paws back is a simple job. The one pictured here took less than ten mins to do, yet the rewards are very long lasting.
