25.01.2022 An update from Paul Hession from Mapp and Hession Pharmacy As we begin another week of lockdowns, I wanted to communicate to you a couple of things that I believe are important to remember. Firstly, just in relation to my own pharmacy, we have put up large signs at the front of the store outlining our procedures during this time. I have found that it gets confusing as you need to get supplies from the supermarket, the butcher, greengrocer, hardware store etc and they all have... different procedures. The frustration some of us feel is we are trying to do the right thing but are unsure what the ‘right thing’ is in different environments. Please take the time to read the couple of points we have outlined as you visit the pharmacy, but please be assured that we are OPEN, we have not changed our hours, still 8am-5.30pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am-12noon on Saturday. As long as you are feeling well you are WELCOME to come into the pharmacy and we are happy to see you and look after you as we always have. I have had a couple of experiences last week that make me want to emphasise to everyone, that at this time, more than ever, you need to look after your chronic health conditions. Previous pandemics have shown us that more people are affected by ignoring pre-existing conditions than by the actual pandemic. I can’t stress enough the need to KEEP TAKING your regular medication. If you have a concern about your health, get in touch with your doctor or go to hospital. Don’t think that it will be OK, make sure you seek advice. The doctors are still seeing patients and the couple of examples of serious health conditions I’ve seen last week where the patient didn’t want to bother the doctor makes this point more important than ever!! If we keep up the good work of social distancing, then the end may be in sight. In the meantime, social distancing has meant that as of last week, pathology had not had any confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Murwillumbah. Nationally, social distancing is having another effect, with daily influenza cases being only 6 per day this year compared to over 600 per day last year. The incidence of chickenpox, measles, mumps, meningococcal, whooping cough, pneumococcal, and Qfever have also been slashed. Finally, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at this time, but I think it is important to focus on the positives in our life. I invite you to comment with three things that you are grateful for at this time. I, for one, am grateful for the fact I live in the Tweed Valley, I’m grateful for the way we’ve joined together as a community to battle this threat and I’m grateful for my family who always support me! I need to add a fourth thing I'm grateful for, and that is my amazing team. They have stayed calm under some pretty stressful situations and stepped up in the face of intense workloads over the past 6 weeks. Thank You for all your efforts! My final word is:- Stay the course, every day is one day closer to this all being over!!

15.01.2022 An update from Paul Hession from Mapp and Hession Pharmacy We are now quite a few weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic and I wanted to provide some information about the current situation and how we are adapting at my pharmacy. Fear and anxiety have possibly been the two biggest emotions since this all began. We are hardwired to experience fear primarily. This was very useful when we faced danger on a daily basis back in more primitive times, but unfortunately in modern times it ...can lead us to behave irrationally. Anxiety is inevitable as we process mixed messages from media and government and an ever changing environment. What was true yesterday, is old news today! From my perspective, there are a few bits of good news that we need to know. At the present time our social distancing efforts seem to be having an impact. This means we need to be even more rigorous with our efforts as this can change quickly, but I believe we need to celebrate the wins when they present themselves. Locally, the number of cases is very low and is reasonably stable. Local pathology labs are doing a lot of testing and at this stage the positive rates across the whole Tweed region are less than 2%. At the pharmacy, we are open, and as long as you are feeling well, are welcome to come in. We are practicing social distancing, so after dropping off your script you will be asked to wait outside until we come and get you to let you know it’s ready. We are conducting very regular cleaning of all surfaces in accordance with Dept of Health guidelines as we need to keep not only you, but ourselves safe and healthy. Our stocks of medication are fine and we have not had any major problems, however, we are limiting supply of some items to ensure there is enough for everyone. We also have stocks of natural products to help your immune system, so please make sure you ask our advice about which product is best for you. Our expanded delivery service is up and running to help people who are self isolating and this is proving very popular. See our post on our Facebook page Mapp and Hession Pharmacy for the days we are delivering to your area. We will be expanding this service as demand increases. (Make sure you have put your settings to receive Facebook notifications when we post something new.) I’d like to thank everyone for assisting us with the changes to workflow we have had to make, and for their patience with us as we have experienced busier than usual workloads over the last few weeks. This is definitely a Team Australia moment and the support I’ve seen in my pharmacy for the new regulations and procedures gives me hope that it’s a winning team!!

11.01.2022 An Easter update from Paul Hession at Mapp and Hession Pharmacy With all of the focus now on the current crisis, I want to remind everyone that if you suffer with a chronic health condition, it is now more important than ever that you continue to manage your daily health. Your heart condition, diabetes, mental health etc still need to be monitored. History tells us that when outbreaks of viruses such as SARS and MERS occur, unfortunately more deaths occur from people ignoring... their chronic health conditions than occur from the virus. Make sure you are taking care of yourself, taking your regular medication and continuing to attend medical and other appointments as much as practicable to make sure you are in the best health possible. On the subject of taking care of yourself, with the upcoming Easter break this weekend, we will be closing for the full four days of public holidays. I know this is a time of increased medical need, but we have taken the decision to give our hard working team a four day break. Everyone has been working tirelessly for the past few months, they have all forgone their planned annual leave to ensure that we are available when you need us. I want to pay them a huge thanks for the great work they’ve been doing, and after a four day break, we can come back revitalised to tackle the challenges of the next few months. This Easter will be a different break to what we are used to, but we can be sure that when the good times return, we will appreciate them all the more.
