20.01.2022 Federal Resources Minister Keith Pitt claimed last week cancer patients will die if the #nuclearwaste facility in #kimba does not go ahead. This is emotional blackmail and absolutely untrue. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency chief executive Dr Carl-Magnus Larsson, at a Senate inquiry in June 2020, said: Waste can be safely stored at Lucas Heights for decades to come.... Today however Minister Pitt insisted historic hospital waste must be moved. This waste is of tiny volumes and has been safely stored since the seventies. If hospital waste needs to be moved anywhere, Lucas Heights is the safest and best equipped location. The proposed federal nuclear dump and store is a cheap storage plan for radioactive waste that stays radioactive for more than 10,000 years- an interim facility without a longer term plan. It is effectively dumping the problem on future generations of South Australians. Furthermore, the Bill to go before the Senate will override facts by removing all judicial review. This removes all accountability. We need an independent review of nuclear waste production and disposal in Australia to create a careful evidence based long term best practice plan. We use and value nuclear medicine, and seek the best outcomes for Australian patients and citizens. 07.01.2022 Mistreatment, cover-ups and the alleged murder of 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners. The findings of the Brereton report are a shocking and long overdue moment ...of accountability for the Australian SAS. The Government must now move swiftly to investigate and prosecute, as well as ensure meaningful redress for the families of the victims.

04.01.2022 ICYMI, here's our Pres in The Canberra Times on war, the Brereton report, and whistleblowers: "The reliance on secrecy was taken to a new level by the criminal prosecution of military lawyer David McBride, whose "crime" was to disclose to media the Afghan War files on alleged war crimes in Afghanistan - the very subject of Brereton's report. McBride believed he had exhausted all other avenues internally, including by raising his concerns with very senior military and politica...l figures and the Australian Federal Police, to no avail. For such acts of honour and courage, he faces the possibility of life in prison. If a culture of impunity is to change, the political intimidation of whistleblowers such as McBride must cease."
