15.01.2022 How to store your potting mix bags correctly. If you don’t intend to use your newly purchased bags of potting mix or composts straight away for gardening or p...otting up, store unopened bags in a dry, sheltered area away from the sun and moisture. This will also limit the availability of insects accessing the bags to make a home for themselves. This advice also applies to any leftover half-filled bags. Reseal bag tightly before storing it away. Remember: potting mix does degrade over time. If you have had a bag in the shed for over 12 months, spread the old mix onto a garden bed and buy a fresh new bag of potting mix for potting new plants. The old adage applies, ‘fresh is best’. 12.01.2022 OCTOBER IS the time to: -Restore tired pot plants. Either remove any potting mix you can and replace with fresh mix, or repot into a fresh, slightly larger cont...ainer with all new potting medium. Water the plant thoroughly with seaweed solution to help overcome transplant shock. -Prune climbers that have long trailing stems to maintain control and to keep them growing where you want them. Passionfruit will benefit from thinning out to allow the sun in. -Deadhead roses and other spring bloomers regularly to keep them looking cheerful and to encourage more buds. -Feed annual veggies and flowers with liquid fertiliser and seaweed solution fortnightly. This will keep them strong and maintain growth - they will look and taste fabulous! -Create supports for climbing vegetables. They will grow faster and take up less room if they have a sturdy frame to hang on to. Get creative with old ladders, make teepees of bamboo stakes, or simply use lattice, wire, or star pickets depending on the vigour and eventual height of the plants. #spring #springinthegarden #springjobs #octobertips #gardenclinichelp #askus #helpline #gardenclinicclub #jointoday

08.01.2022 It's ginger planting time. Fresh ginger brings a touch of authenticity to any Asian stir-fry and makes a cool, soothing cordial on a summer afternoon. Here ar...e our top tips for growing ginger in a pot: Select a pot of minimum 40 litre capacity and fill the container with a free draining medium such as #Searles Platinum Potting Mix. Plant rhizomes about 2cm beneath the surface and water well. Cover the opening of the pot with a clear plastic bag to keep the soil moist and remove the plastic when the new shoots appear above the soil. Water every 3-4 days depending on weather, but don’t overwater as gingers fleshy roots will quickly rot in waterlogged conditions.
