18.01.2022 Initial Flood Watch for parts of the eastern Gulf and western Cape between Normanton and Kowanyama, and the North Tropical Coast between Cooktown and Ingham Iss...ued at 1:57 pm EST on Saturday 2 January 2021 Flood Watch Number: 1 Minor to moderate flooding likely in the Flood Watch area from Sunday. A tropical low over the western Gulf of Carpentaria is expected to move east-southeast and intensify during Sunday, bringing heavy rainfall to the Flood Watch area from Sunday. The area of heavy rainfall is expected to extend to the North Tropical Coast overnight Sunday into Monday from Cooktown down to Ingham, with heavy rainfall persisting for a few days. Most catchments in the Flood Watch area have recorded rainfall totals of at least 100-300 mm in the past week, with river level rises currently being recorded at many locations. Catchments will therefore respond more quickly than normal to heavy rainfall. A Cyclone Watch and track map are current for parts of the Flood Watch area. Minor to moderate flooding is possible in the Flood Watch area. Flooding is likely in the Gulf and Cape catchments from Sunday, and for the North Tropical Coast catchments from Monday. This will likely impact roads and travel in the Flood Watch area, with potential too for property flooding. Localised flooding and disruption to transport routes are expected throughout the Flood Watch area from Sunday. Catchments likely to be affected include: Norman River Gilbert River Mitchell River Staaten River Daintree River Mossman River Barron River Mulgrave and Russell Rivers Johnstone River Tully River Murray River Herbert River

18.01.2022 TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 10 Issued at 1:48 pm EST on Monday 18 January 2021 Headline: Kimi intensifies to category 2 as it moves south. Cyclone Watch declared to Bowen.... Areas Affected: Warning Zone Innisfail to Ayr, inluding Lucinda, Palm Island and Townsville Watch Zone Ayr to Bowen. Cancelled Zone Port Douglas to Innisfail. Details of Tropical Cyclone Kimi at 1:00 pm AEST: Intensity: Category 2, sustained winds near the centre of 95 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 130 kilometres per hour. Location: within 20 kilometres of 17.5 degrees South 146.8 degrees East, estimated to be 130 kilometres east southeast of Cairns and 195 kilometres north of Townsville. Movement: south southeast at 15 kilometres per hour. Tropical cyclone Kimi has intensified to a category 2 cyclone. It is currently moving south-southeast and is likely to continue this movement through tonight, but is now expected to slow and stall off the coast between Hinchinbook Island and Townsville on Tuesday while beginning to weaken. However, considerable uncertainty remains with the future movement of the system, and a category 2 coastal crossing between Hinchinbrook Island and Townsville tonight or on Tuesday REMAINS POSSIBLE. Hazards: DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 150 km/h may develop about coastal and island areas between Hinchinbrook Island and Ayr overnight tonight or on Tuesday, depending on the movement of the cyclone. GALES with gusts to 120km/h are likely about coastal and island communities between Innisfail and Ayr tonight and Tuesday. Gales may also extend southwards to Bowen later on Tuesday depending on the movement of the cyclone. HEAVY RAINFALL with the potential to produce flash flooding and major river flooding expected to affect coastal and adjacent inland areas between Innisfail and Bowen tonight and on Tuesday. A Flood Watch is current for this area; refer to that product for more detail. ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES are likely today as Tuesday as the cyclone gets closer to the coast, however the sea level should not exceed the highest tide of the year. Large waves are likely along the beachfront. Recommended Action: People between Innisfail and Ayr, including Lucinda, Palm Island and Townsville should immediately commence or continue preparations, especially securing boats and property. People between Ayr and Bowen should consider what action they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases.

Areas Affected: Warning Zone Mornington Island to Kowanyama, including Burketown and inland areas to Croydon. Watch Zone None. Cancelled Zone Kowanyama to Pormpuraaw. Movement: southeast at 12 kilometres per hour. Tropical Cyclone Imogen is expected to move towards the east southeast and cross the southeast Gulf coast near Karumba tonight, or early Monday morning. Once Imogen makes landfall, it will become slow-moving over the southern Cape York Peninsula as a tropical low. These winds are already occurring on Mornington Island and are likely to develop about the coastal and island communities between Mornington Island and Kowanyama, including Burketown, from this evening and overnight until the cyclone makes landfall. Coastal residents between Mornington Island and Kowanyama are specifically warned of the dangerous STORM TIDE as the cyclone crosses the coast on tonight's high tide. The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide, with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas close to the shoreline. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the authorities. HEAVY RAINFALL that is likely to lead to flash flooding, flooding of low lying areas and riverine flooding is likely about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria coast and adjacent inland this afternoon. Heavy rainfall is likely to spread to remaining areas of southern Cape York Peninsula on Monday as the low or tropical cyclone moves onto the coast and further inland. A separate severe weather warning is current for damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall elsewhere. Recommended Action: People between Mornington Island and Kowanyama, including Burketown, should remain inside until the cyclone has passed and listen to the next advice at 8 pm.
