24.01.2022 100 years ago youd be traveling along this track on a steam locomotive.The carriages would have been loaded with ancient Jarrah and Karri logs some being 400years old destined for a saw mill deep in the Karri Forest .Its such a shame the Railway tracks were pulled up and the line discontinued as its one of the most scenic sections of the Boranup forest between #margaretriver and #karridale The saw mill site has now been turned into a state of the art camping area courtes...y of the department of Environment who manage our National Parks .Theres so much history along the way and If you walk the track you can still find some early railway memorabilia and if youre really lucky...a 100 year railway spike .. 24.01.2022 Day tour to Black Point to see the ancient Basalt Columns today. Kathryn and Ian are from Bunbury but have never seen this part of the world . So today we did a 250 klm round trip from Margaret River, over the Blackwood river then some serious off road 4wd driving through the D'Entrecasteaux Park, in the amazing ancient Jarrah and Marri forest ,rare orchids , beach combed the low tide out to the columns then chilled out looking over the amazing coast stretching all the way t...o Jasper Beach and beyond .As it turns out Kathryn was born in Margaret River and raised on the outskirts of Karridale. So a lot of reminiscing and stories as we drove past where she grew up .What a day . 19.01.2022 The Nannup flower festival is currently displaying its annual tulip blooms in the Main Street .This quaint little hamlet is about an hours drive from Margaret River or Busseleton and full of quirky shops, artisan displays and cafes for a great morning tea and lunch .The tulips are stunning .We saw lots of open gardens and Agri tourism experiences with some amazing scenery just on the outskirts of town equal to the rolling hills of Vienna . 18.01.2022 A question I get asked a lot about our amazing coastline is ... what is a rip ,but it’s really hard to explain and see if you’re right on the shore line . Well here’s a classic birds eye view from Contos cliffs . It’s part of a beach that looks like a calm Channel and inviting to swim but has a strong undercurrent usually flanked by white water turbulence. If you look closely you can see the under current . I cut my teeth on these beaches and yep ..I got caught in the inf...amous one at River Mouth beach as a 13 year old .. 17.01.2022 This is a part of the Margaret River I grew up on .I cut my teeth on this river. As kids we spent all year on it either shooting the rapids with a corrugated iron canoe or wed be swimming and Marroning in the granite pools once the river stopped flowing in summer.Its just one of those places you take for granted growing up and now in the winter of my life you realise how special this little river is . I now take my guests there and theyre blown away by the beauty and tran...quility of the river . Yes thats my tour car parked up on the edge . 50 years ago it would have been an old 28 fixed wheel tredly pulling a trailer for surf boards and canoes . Ive taken 3 million photos of these water falls but never seen it from a Drone perspective. So today I caught up with my mate Peter Dury. We were one of the founding members of the Camera club about 10 years ago. Peter as many locals would know is a fine doctor now retired.Like me he loves photography and has taken to Droning. 14.01.2022 Madeleine cant remember the last time she smelt Brown Scented Boronia . She recalls it being sold on the streets of Fremantle and Perth many years ago when it was still abundant in the south West and licenses given to a select few Wildflower pickers. Those days are long gone with this wildflower I consider critically threatened and endangered . Today Madeleine not only experienced its exotic perfume but growing in its natural habitat .Mind you I had to blindfold her in g...etting there ..We were lucky to still see a patch in full bloom as its winter flowering and usually finishes by mid August. 08.01.2022 Theres currently more orchids and leaves in bud than a tobacco farm in Northcliffe. So well you may ask ...what has tobacco in common with our native orchids . Apart from both plants having amazing leaves ...absolutely nothing ! It was just one of many conversation pieces that came up when I was showing people orchids yesterday. People always like to know the history of the area and somehow we went back to the late 1890s gold rush days when a Greek tobacconist saw an opp...ortunity in manufacturing cigarettes in Perth . . Yes there was a thriving tobacco industry in Manjimup ,Pemberton an Northcliffe up until around the mid 50s when filtered packaged cigarettes imported from the US. forced the local market to collapse Not a lot of tobacco was grown in the #margaretriver area ,however... there was another leaf variety that was grown in our forests in the 60s & 70s that could also be smoked with amazing aphrodisiac effects .. 07.01.2022 I was trying to take some shots of some White tail black cockatoos feeding on the side of the road but unfortunately they got spooked and buggered off. They feed on an introduced flower from South Africa which is now very wide spread along the south coast ..I quite like them , especially when the sun highlights the hairy stems and leaves . 06.01.2022 One of the most elusive and beautiful orchids has appeared in Margaret River . You don’t really appreciate it until you take a macro shot or use a magnifying glass and see how intricate its labellum is .It flowers only for a day or max two before it aborts .So not only is it well camouflaged it only stands about 150 mm high .
