19.01.2022 The Don't Dam the Donnelly River campaign needs your support. Step up to the plate, support your local farmers and protect the Southern Forest Food region. This... magnificent region that encompasses Manjimup, Pemberton and the surrounding areas relies on rainfall being captured and stored on the land on each retrospective farm to have water security. The Southern Forest Irrigation Scheme (SFIS) is stopping farmers from capturing and holding water on their own farms due to a centralised dam being built and then piped to a handful of wealthy companies and rich farmers (about 67 farms having all of the allocated water rights) while every other family farm (over 350 farms) miss out on water rights. Farmers are being stopped from collecting and holding water on their own property in the form of farm dams, and instead are being forced to buy water from this scheme. These independent small farms, create more employment, reduce regional poverty, produce more food per acre, and are better at managing natural resources sustainably. If the Donnelly Dam goes ahead it could destroy these farms and the food production region in the Southern Forests area as well as destroy the lives of hundreds of farmers and the regional towns. The Southern Forests region produces 50 types of fruit, vegetables, beef, sheep, dairy, pork and wine We need water and food security in WA. Resiliency in the South West depends on stopping the Donnelly River Dam from going ahead. Call the Minister for Water, Dave Kelly on (08) 6552 6100 and demand he stop the Southern Forest Irrigation Scheme from going ahead and to ask the local farmers what they want to continue to produce food sustainably into the future for WA.
