22.01.2022 Found her!! Hi to the lady that left me a message! I arrived home this week to find a message on my answering machine from a lovely lady. ... She didn’t leave her name or her contact details, but suggested a private group class for her and her friends dogs. Great idea, but I have no way to talk to her about it! Feel free to shoot me a message or call again, I’d love to chat!

19.01.2022 I would suggest first watching this video normally with the sound on before reading on. How did watching that make you feel? If you found it incredibly distressing, you get a gold star! What you are seeing is learned helplessness. This is an involuntary behaviour that can occur when an animal feels helpless. If they cannot find a coping strategy or, the one that is chosen was unsuccessful (i.e. biting and backing away didn’t make the person go away) it results in the tirin...g of the sensory neurons in the nervous system which causes the body to shut down. When did this stop becoming funny to you (hopefully it never was)? Was it when the dog was still in the owner’s lap, barking lunging and then trying desperately to back away and bite the person that took him from its owner's lap? Was it when the dog, after being given back to the owner the second time appeared to be gasping for air, his ears were back, body tense, he had longer lips than the joker and his tongue appeared to be blue from stress? Remember the comments made by the person holding the dog. He says things like why are you so scared of me, is he breathing? He even proceeds to check that this dog’s heart is still beating. This tells us he is deliberately ignoring the dogs basic need to feel safe. To me, the scariest thing about this post is that it’s described as ‘hilarious’. We continue to misread our dogs and in consequence they are emotionally shut down, or resort to defensive behaviours such as biting, growling, and lunging. If this dog were 10kg heavier, maybe it's message would have been taken more seriously when it bit the person that grabbed it.

17.01.2022 This video shows the process it takes to teach species other than dogs and the challenges it can present. The end result is well worth it though. This post comes at a difficult time for me and my family our cat Simbi is currently missing. I want to take a moment to honour him and all he contributed to our family. We hope that wherever he may be, he is at peace.
