25.01.2022 IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR NOW . GET into YER GI AND GET INTO YOUR KATA The good news is that Tuesday and Thursday karate training will, until further notice - go ahead as usual. The bad news is that everyone entering the dojo must steralise their hands with the hand sanitiser you will find on the counter adjacent to the front door. This is the condition for entry. While senior instructors and committee members will continue to monitor the threat of Covid-19, every ef...fort is being made to ensure hygiene at the dojo remains at its optimum. To this end, please be advised all dojo cups and glasses have been sealed away, which means students will have to bring their own drink bottles while we all weather the coronavirus storm. Anyone student or parent, with flu-like symptoms, runny nose, fever or cough are asked to be mindful and not come to training. Consideration and the care for others should be a priority during these turbulent times. On Tuesday we noticed a number of parents have already begun to keep their younger children at home which is totally understandable. And it was equally encouraging to see a good showing of the older students and adults take on their training with the zest and fire we have come to expect of them. However, all this could change in a heartbeat as time goes on particularly if the schools close. Until then, we will remain vigilant and keep you posted on any new developments that could impact the Margaret River Karate Club and its students. See more

21.01.2022 WELL WE’VE GOT NOTHING BUT BAD NEWS TODAY A lot can happen in a week, particularly when it comes to Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by a new Coronavirus that cause respiratory infections. The killer virus currently has a stranglehold on the world, forcing most countries to introduce strict measures to help curb its movements including, self-isolating, the closing of borders and the cessation of international air travel.... Due to the rapid onslaught of Covid-19 across Australia over the past week, national, state and local governments have had no choice but to introduce life-changing initiatives in a bid to slow the spread of the highly contagious virus. To this end, all sporting venues have been ordered to shut down ceasing all activities immediately. So, life at the Margaret River Karate Club has changed in a heartbeat. The club has cancelled all training and associated activities at the dojo for the foreseeable future. Because our borders are now closed to the world, we have become prisoners in our own country; we must work together to beat this thing and take heed to the advice and directives given us by those who implement them. Watch this space for updates. Stay Safe - all of you ... Marius

13.01.2022 KARATE KID ZEBEDIAH BARNETT LEADS THE PACK AND AWARDED SPIRIT MEDAL AT 2018 USKU NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS A Margaret River Senior High School student was awarded the Carl Marriott Spirit Award at the 2018 Universal Shotokan Karate Championships, held last weekend at the recreation centre and the karate club dojo. Zebediah Barnett, 15, was presented the enviable award following the three-day event for his outstanding achievements during the international competition which saw mo...re than 150 karateka converge on the community from as far away as South Africa, Japan, the Philippines, Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales who had come to the southwest to take part in the biennial tournament. According to Margaret River Karate Club Sensei Ken Rouw, this is only the second time the Spirit Award has been awarded. The first award was presented in Adelaide, South Australia in 2015. The Carl Marriott Award was initiated four years ago, following the passing of Marriott - the chief instructor of Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU). After Carl died suddenly a few years ago it was decided to carry on his memory in this way, said Rouw. He was the Chief Instructor of this organisation since the mid-1970’s and was an inspirational leader and karate was his life. He was a true warrior. The award is given to a junior competitor who performed to the best of his or her ability, was successful in their events, showed humility in winning and demonstrated strong spirit in competing, as well as reflecting some of the characteristics of Shihan Carl Marriott. It is most certainly an encouragement award and is not given lightly, Rouw Said. This year, Zebediah Barnett rose to the challenge and secured the award, which, he says took him totally by surprise. I was taking off my vest when they called out my name. It took me by surprise. It was so unexpected but nice to receive it as a reward on my karate journey, he said. Barnett came first or second in all seven events he competed in winning gold and silver medals for his efforts in individual kata, team kata, kumite, bunkai and group events. All this has also given me a kick start and helped motivate me to do even better. This is definitely a turning point in my life. As for the tournament, it was hell good I made so many new friends, said the young teenager. Pictured below: Spirit Award recipient Zebediah Barnett [R] in action against Griffin Keen. See more

12.01.2022 MRKC WELCOMES SENSEI GERRY FREEMAN TO ITS DOJO From time to time our dojo plays host to visiting karateka from other club dojos. 12.01.2022 Local Martial Arts Fighters off to Challenge Warriors in the Land of the Rising Sun Margaret River’s elite Karate Club has selected three of its senior fighters to compete in next week’s 21st USKU Universal Shotokan Karate Championships in Takanabe, Japan. The young warriors will not only represent their club dojo and the State of Western Australia but also will join the main Australian karateka contingent (numbering approximately 60) and compete on the world stage against s...ome of the top fighters on the planet. More than a dozen countries are expected to compete at the biennial championships. Zebediah Barnett (16), Danielle Campbell (18) and Zane McKee (17) are the three students picked to represent their dojo who together, have notched up almost 20 years of training between them. Senior instructor and Sensei Ken Rouw, who will be accompanying the trio, says he’s pleased with this year’s selection. Danielle and Zane are both going for the first time so it should be a great experience for them competing at international level, saying he is confident they will do their dojo proud. Zebe, on the other hand, has been involved in karate now consistently for more than eight years, which in itself is a remarkable achievement, he said. But this time he will be competing as well as going for a black belt grading. As he has done with most of his students over the past 30 years, Rouw said he has watched the journey Zebediah has made over the past decade. After competing very successfully in the international tournament in Margaret River last year, it will be quite a challenge for him in Japan where the number of competitors could number well over 300. His development from a quiet, shy child to a confident 16-year-old has in itself been an amazing journey to be a part of, he said. Barnett, who acknowledges being a seasoned fighter, has represented his state, fought interstate and competed internationally. And this trip will be the third time he has travelled to the Land of the Rising Sun. I am lucky and honoured to have this opportunity to go to Japan again and compete against some of the best Shotokan fighters in the world, he said following an intense training session earlier this week. The first time I went I was a purple belt and only 12 years old, he recalled, but I have come a long way since then. And although Danielle and Zane don’t have the same amount of experience as Zebe, it is hoped that what they gain from this trip will not only reap rewards for the club but also encourage others to work towards the same goal, said Rouw. - Marius Dakin See more
