24.01.2022 Our Year 6 conservationists have been working with Nature Conservation Margaret River Region, monitoring the Yalgardup Brook Catchment. We think our teacher and parents had as much fun and learning as our Year 6 students! "There is no description, no image in any book that is capable of replacing the sight of real trees, and all the life to be found around them, in a real forest. Something emanates from those trees which speaks to the soul, something no book, no museum is capable of giving." (From Childhood to Adolescence. Maria Montessori.)

23.01.2022 It is true that man has created enjoyments in social life and has brought about a vigorous human love in community. But nevertheless, he still belongs to nature, and, especially when he is a child, he must needs draw from it the forces necessary to the development of the body and of the spirit. (The Montessori Method, p.65) For full article on Nature and Gardening in Montessori Education see https://www.youmemontessori.com/nature-and-gardening-in-mo/

22.01.2022 "As soon as children find something that interests them, they lose their instability and learn to concentrate." (Maria Montessori). Have you seen the lovely gardens around your child's class room? Our Junior Primary has been lucky enough to have some sun shine on their vegetable pots. Marri and Banksia students have been able to carefully tend and harvest some produce right outside their front door. Gardening is a wonderful way to harness a child's interest. Looking for some... holiday inspiration? Here is a fantastic garden spiral idea that you could try in your garden https://www.youmemontessori.com/nature-and-gardening-in-mo/

22.01.2022 Margaret River Montessori is now an Owl Friendly Hero Organisation with Owl Friendly Margaret River Region This means we choose wildlife-friendly methods of controlling rats and mice as an important way that we can make our region a safe haven for owls and other native birds and animals. See more info here https://owlfriendly.org.au/ Our children recently enjoyed a visit from Boyd Wylkes from Owl friendly Margaret river who shared valuable information about the how we can pro...tect owls and other animals who eat rats and mice by selecting the right kinds of products for rodent management. MRMS Community we implore you to look into what you use to control rats and mice on your property. There is valuable information here https://owlfriendly.org.au/rodent-control/#advice but Boys tells us Before putting any pets and wildlife at risk from rat baits, firstly: keep your place clean and tidy, clean up brush piles and rubbish, secure compost heaps use poultry feeders which prevent spillage pick up fallen fruits seal holes and other potential entry points in buildings and enclosures use traps a wide variety of traps is available; careful positioning is necessary to be effective and reduce harm to non-target species, particularly with lethal traps that ‘kill first and ask questions later’. Place all traps and baits out of reach of non-target animals noting that setting baits and traps where there is a reasonable chance of killing or catching native wildlife is in fact illegal unless licensed. If baits are a necessity, choose only First Generation ones with active ingredients Warfarin (e.g. in Ratsak Double Strength) and Coumatetralyl (e.g. in Racumin). Wildlife and pets can cope with these relatively well when taken in through secondary poisoning. Our school has also been committed to this for some time and received formal recognition of our efforts by Owl friendly Margaret River with the presentation of a plaque to Principal Lisa Fenton. 21.01.2022 Maria Montessori wrote of "The Importance of Movement in General Development". Montessori observed that our central nervous system in it's "amazing complexity" works in such a way that "movement is the final result of to which the working of all these delicate mechanisms leads up to". Montessori surmised that it is "only by movement that the personality can express itself." (125) Furthering this idea, she found "those children who have been able to work with their hands make... headway in their developmemt, and reach a strength of character which is conspicuous." (140) Our Junior Primary students have been utilizing movement with the goal of developing hand eye coordination and gross motor skills - and having FUN! Source: Montessori, M (1949). 19.01.2022 An environment-based education movement-at all levels of education-will help students realize that school isn't supposed to be a polite form of incarceration, but a portal to the wider world. Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder One of our students took a little time out in our beautiful nature playground to relax in the warmth of a little spring sunshine. Our students are encouraged to naturally incorporate the outdoors into into their learning experience here at Margaret River Montessori School. Photo Credit- Demi Wright

19.01.2022 Are you joining us for our Free Parent NVC Workshop this Thursday? Please don't forget to RSVP to our school office 97572 564 or [email protected]

15.01.2022 Spring is in the air and two of our Montessori children, Winter from Junior Primary and Luca from Bush Babes, took a moment to appreciate the sunshine and beauty of our school wetlands from our bird hide on their way home today. Was there a family of ducks with a bevvy of little fluffy ducklings to watch I wonder? Or did they see the scratching from a mother ring tail possum carrying her babies to the safety of the tree top to sleep all day? Were there tadpoles wriggling and... ducking and diving? Or frog song in their ears? Is the bush land alive with spring flowers yet? Have you had a quiet walk through our great outdoors with your family this spring? Our wetland area, situated at the south end of our school, has proven to be a wonderful outdoor class room for many years and a place to observe a rich biodiversity right on our towns doorstep. With preservation, education and community well being in mind our school undertook a Wetland Restoration project in 2014, setting a long term goal of being "beneficial to not just the school, but the broader community" (Lisa Fenton, School Principal). Community spirit and support for this vision saw votes from our community secure an SGIO Community grant to assist this project in coming to fruition. Utilizing the building expertise of Drew Szandtner (Ambient Building Design and parent from our school) and working closely with the Cape to Cape Catchment Group (now Nature Conservation Margaret River) the school oversaw restoration to a "prized urban eco-system; an asset we (the school community) want to look after" (Frank Pethica, former School Council Chairperson). The restoration project was underpinned with the goals of making our wetland area accessible to the wider community and supporting our children to become custodians of their environment. The wetland has become a wonderful outdoor learning area and sees our students, and many other schools visiting to undertake flora and fauna studies, guided by Nature Conservation Margaret River Region. With this fantastic opportunity right on our school door step, we can support the process of cascade learning in our children - with their passion and knowledge for the natural environment being shared their peers and wider community. In the words or Maria Montessori in The Absorbent Mind: "A child, who more than anyone else is a spontaneous observer of nature, certainly needs to have at his disposal material upon which they can work." (Montessori, 1912, p 73)

15.01.2022 One of the benefits of a school set on the edge of bush land and our very only wetland precinct, is the exposure to the wonderful wild creatures. This morning a beautiful ring tailed possum decided our Junior Primary was a fantastic place to have his day sleep. JP student, Lucas, affectionately named him Jeff. We were lucky to be able to call on one of our parents who is a qualified carer to asses his situation and fluid levels. Tonight, we hope Jeff finds a leafier place to bed down for his next day time nap. The variety of wild life surrounding our school grounds never fails to amaze, as staff and students compare notes on what they have spotted....Regent Parrots, Quendas, Black Cockatoos, Kangaroos and so much more.

11.01.2022 A little message to all of our MRMS Families from all of our staff.

11.01.2022 "...children construct their own characters, building up in themselves the qualities we admire. These do not spring from our example of admonishments, but they result solely from a long and slow sequence of activities carried out by the child himself between the ages of three and six. " (Montessori, M.1949. "Character Building is the Child's Own Achievement" in The Absorbent Mind, 190-196. Oxford, Clio Press)

10.01.2022 After school sport club returns to MRMS!

09.01.2022 Welcome back to Term 2...

09.01.2022 "A child, more than anyone else, is a spontaneous observer of nature." (M Montessori)

08.01.2022 Don't forget that we kick off Book Week today...Our ILF book swap, run by our P&F, has seen some new reading for excited students as well as a collection of donations for the Indigenous Learning Fund. Tomorrow, classes will be treated to story time. Friday our book character parade will be on for those who want to dress up, with a special surprise planned for our students. And next week, our Curious Creatures Wild Minds themed educational talks will brighten up the day on Monday and Thursday. Our lovely librarians, Catherine and Sandi, have been busy organizing and decorating to celebrate Book Week and the CBCA shortlisted book titles.

07.01.2022 "When children are interested in a subject they tend to spend a long time studying it, or in other words, trying to find their own experience." (M Montessori)

07.01.2022 Many reasons to smile...

06.01.2022 Our Extended Day program is run 2 afternoons a week. This program offers our 3 year old students an opportunity to take part in full days of school. On these afternoons they work with our wonderful EA, Gayna Luck and participate in exciting and educational activities tailored to their age. This term there have been visits to the hard court where students used a hoop and chalk to make creations, a visit to playgroup to see the baby ducklings, a trip to the library (most of the children had never been before) and even some botany/biology/horticulture!

06.01.2022 National Volunteers Week 2020 The whole Margaret River Montessori School community wishes to offer our respect and gratitude to our all of our community volunteers - both for the energy they give and the example they set. #waveforvolunteers #NVW2020 "Every man rows hardest for the boat, knowing full well that this will bring him no personal glory nor special reward...if all were moved by the wish to bring honor to his group rather than to himself, then the whole human family would be reborn." (Montessori, M. 1949. quoting Washburne, The Absorbent Mind,Clio Press, p. 214)

06.01.2022 They (the children) come to feel part of a group to which their activity contributes. And not only do they begin to take an interest in this, but they work on it profoundly, as one may say in their heartsthe children no longer act thoughtlessly, but put the group first and try to succeed for it’s benefit. (Montessori, The Absorbent Mind, p. 212) MRMS works with Nature Conservation MARGARET River Region on projects over school year, encouraging our students to be custodians of their beautiful region and its environmental well being. Nature Conservation has some fantastic projects for volunteers to be a part of around our community. Volunteering within our community offers us all an opportunity to put the group first. Here are some great projects for your family to be involved in with Nature Conservation with Margaret River Region.

05.01.2022 Creativity and Imagination in Early Childhood... The Montessori education follows Dr Montessori's high value of children "being free to choose their own activity, activity adults often interpret as play" (Feez, Montessori and Early Childhood, 34). Maria Montessori observed that when left to their own devices children tended to ignore the toys and chose instead to work with real things. This is a concept examined in Montessori and Early Childhood by researcher and lecturer, ...Susan Feez (The Child Worker and the Adult Observer, 19-37) and more recently encapsulated in a recent National Geographic Article: https://www.nationalgeographic.com//why-coronavirus-bore/ Photo credit: Rae Pethica

03.01.2022 "I have a little brown cocoon of an idea that may possibly expand into a magnificent moth of fulfillment" (Lucy Maud Montgomery) This week a little visitor to our office window kept staff and students entertained as it tirelessly moved its tiny cocoon of sticks across our sparkling clean windows. We watched as the little fellow was heading for higher ground (maybe with the idea that wild wet weather was on the way). It was last seen tucked up safely in the eaves of the administration building, leaving only a trail of climbing thread behind...the simple things!

02.01.2022 The weather wasn’t too kind today on our last day of Term 2 at Margaret River Montessori School but that didn’t stop these amazing kids from having a blast....
