25.01.2022 More than 40 grandmothers, describing themselves as ‘Nannas for Native Forests’ have brought logging to a halt in Helms Forest between Nannup and Margaret River this morning. The women are requesting a meeting with Ministers Kelly and Dawson to demand an end to the logging of all native forests in the South West. Spokesperson and Great-Grandmother Di Shanahan said, We are requesting a face to face meeting with Ministers Kelly and Dawson. We want them to meet us here in the...se forests. We want to have a conversation with them, not read the same copy of the letter or email response they have been sending out to our letters and emails for years. We want them to see and feel what is happening here and to hear and feel our grief, anger and concern for the future. The Nannas for Native Forests moved in overnight, blocked the roads off with their cars, lit small fires for warmth and set up a marquee decorated by their signature colourful, handmade banners saying Forests for Life and Protect your forests so they can protect you. The women want an end to the logging of all native forests in the South West and say they have taken this action out of frustration at the fact that logging is still going on despite declining forest health, loss of habitat and biodiversity, a drying climate, a huge decline in rainfall in the South West and ongoing community opposition. They also hope to inspire Grandmothers elsewhere to take up the cause. Peta Goodwin, one of the spokespeople for the first Grannies blockade, and a Grandmother said, The lid has been lifted off this issue and people are horrified by what is happening in our publicly-owned native forests. The Gallop government’s decision in 2001 to stop logging in old growth forests due to community pressure did not do enough to protect them the logging has been going on since then and still is. So much of the forest has been lost and we desperately need forests to regulate climate and safeguard biodiversity. All native forests are worth more standing. We need the McGowan Government to take some leadership on this, said Ms Goodwin. The women do not discount further action should their request be refused or ignored but hope that it will be met without fuss or delay.

24.01.2022 Lounge Suite & Dog Bed. Free to anyone who wants it. Someone donated it to us or dumped it on us more likely. Just what we need for our loungeroom and our dogs. Now it will cost us good fundraising money to take it to Shire landfill site.

24.01.2022 GREAT FOREST CASE DISPATCH - FUNGI The main goal of the Great Forest Case is about protecting Tasmania’s forests for the plants, animals and all the other organ...isms that inhabit them, like Tasmania’s outstanding variety of bright and unusual fungi. Fungi are extremely important for the forests. They are nature’s recycler’s which decompose dead plant material, allowing the nutrients to become available to growing plants. Fungi are not plants, they are in an entirely separate kingdom. In fact, fungi are more closely related to animals than plants! The mushroom cap is only a small part of the fungus, it has a network of ‘mycelium’ which are thread-like structures which grow underground and in decaying logs. Some individual fungi can have mycelium networks which cover hundreds of hectares. There are still many unknown species of fungi in Tasmania’s forests. Furthermore, very little is known about the ones that have been described by science and named. This is because they are hard to study as they remain hidden most of the year and are only visible for a short period when the mushroom cap is visible. Fungi often have small, restricted distributions that make them sensitive to logging activities. The ideal habitat for fungi is dark and damp conditions in mature forests conditions which hare destroyed when the forest is logged. The Great Forest Case aims to put an end native forest logging, which will help protect Tasmania’s incredible diversity of Fungi. 23.01.2022 I am absolutely against logging of our native forests in WA for all the obvious reasons that have been evident for at least 20 years. The science has been in for a long time giving very good evidence that climate change is being exacerbated by removal of trees. The dramatic loss of native species through loss of habitat in the native forests is sickening and unforgivable. We see these poor creatures being forced into urban areas that are not safe for them. While going to wor...k I often used to count around 10 squashed animals on our local roads in our country town. Endangered ring-tailed possums, kangaroos, chuditch, snakes, lizards, birds, especially the Spring babies, etc. they have no hope. The trees also protect our streams and keep the water fresh. The natural beauty of a forest full of massive trees is sadly a thing of the past. Be aware that despite the rhetoric loggers are still cutting down huge old trees. Forests are left a mess when loggers have been through. Piles of unwanted trees, massive areas of scarified dirt roads, exposed soil and unmanaged stumps where the regrowth leaves nothing but a fire hazard. We listened to scientists’ advice on Covid 19 containment. Please listen to environmental scientists’ advice on the reasons we have to protect our native forest. Remember when whaling was stopped the economy wasn’t ruined, we all adapted. It is critical for our children’s future, the sake of our planet, to please STOP LOGGING NATIVE FORESTS NOW! --Neroli Carlton (70 years old) #Nannas4NativeForests #HelmsForest #ProtectNativeForests #Forests4Climate #climate #oldgrowthgrannies 3 ways you can show your support for Nannas for Native Forests (start by giving them a like and follow) Please sign and share the online letter to the Premier, and to increase the power of your letter today, edit it to include a mention of your support of the ‘Nannas for Native Forests’ and their request for all native forests to be immediately protected. https://waforestalliance.good.do/forests/forestsforclimate/ Join the team working to protect native forests: https://wafa.org.au/join-in/#join Donate to the crowdfunder to produce the documentary, ‘Cry of the Forests’ which looks at the plight of WA’s unique forests and their value in mitigating climate change. https://documentaryaustralia.com.au/pro/cry-of-the-forests/

22.01.2022 Nature as Thing a Lament for our Sacred Forests Charles Eisenstein, in his latest published essay World on Fire (https://charleseisenstein.org/essays/world-on-fire/) perfectly articulates why I raise my voice, take a stance and write about the beauty of Nature. We need to do everything we can to move away from the Growth at all Costs, Nature as Thing world-view. I am one of many millions of Human Beings who view myself interconnected with Nature. Planet Earth is alive..., a breathing entity, an eco-system, the web of life. Trees and forests are not a thing for us to use, blindly unaware of every other living being within. Nature has a Right to Life as much as we do. Quote from Charles: On the most obvious level, the view of nature-as-thing greatly facilitates the clearcutting, mining, stripping, and profiteering, just as dehumanization of other people allows their exploitation and enslavement. It’s the same basic mindset. But there is another problem too: the mindset of nature-as-thing prevents us from coming into the intimacy of relationship that is necessary to tend, heal, and cocreate with it to mutual benefit. It is like the difference between a doctor who treats you impersonally, as a case, and one who sees you as a full human being.... #Nannas4NativeForests #HelmsForest #ProtectNativeForests #Forests4Climate #climate #oldgrowthgrannies

18.01.2022 Great info thanks Jeff Pow.

16.01.2022 On Saturday the 26th of December 2020 it was a neap tide and this is what north of the rocks on Cable Beach looked like because of all the usual daily traffic a...nd the lack of big tidal movement to level out the deep tyre ruts in the sand. The third photo is of a hatchling we found that night which was turned over and stuck in a tyre rut in the sand just out of the high tide mark. I find it very interesting that we know that the tyre ruts are a risk for hatchlings and that we know that this actually happens but yet the Yawuru Park Council (YPC) still allows vehicle beach access to this area during the turtle nesting and hatching season. Does the Gunian Binba Yawuru Conservation Park Management Plan that was recently released - and bragged about - mention anything in regards to assisting the flatback turtles during their nesting and hatching seasons? Are they not a vulnerable and threatened species anymore or something? Before heading out on our beach walk we knew we'd find stuck hatchlings in those tyre ruts because they were disgustingly deep, and everywhere. We were saddened to discover that we were correct. This isn't the first time we've found hatchlings stuck in tyre ruts on this part of this beach. We've even found them in the morning daylight stuck in ruts and dead because someone drove down in the morning and squashed them while they were stuck in these deep tyre ruts. This talk has been happening for ages. It's not new knowledge or information. How long is the YPC going show no respect for these turtle species on the beach section that they're responsible for managing? The hatchling in the third photo was rescued. The sand was smoothened over so it could crawl out of the rut and then it crawled straight to the water and swam away.

15.01.2022 NANNAS PROTEST POWER Hundreds of people rallied outside State Parliament today, calling on the government to stop the logging of all native forests, immediately.... The protestors, who call themselves Nannas for Native Forests, say they're sounding an alarm about the destruction of the environment, and they won't give up.

14.01.2022 Anyone know the name of this tree from Kondinin ?

14.01.2022 And yes, the story goes on!!! Today I did not get out into country as a lot of office stuff had to be dealt with. After a phone call to a IT wizz a couple of days ago to ask how I could improve reception on my scanner, in order to hear what is going on at the fireground, I was handed the same night an aerial, which both can be used on the house as well as on the car when out in the field. And consequently I could hear clearly today the conversations on the fireground.

11.01.2022 My father came from England when he was 19. He married my mum and had 7 children. He became a farmer. When I was a little girl my dad made a comment that has stayed in my mind ever since. He said we have to stop cutting the trees because if we don’t, we are going to run out of water. The trees keep the moisture alive. About eight years later, when I was about 14, the little creek in our town went dry. He was right, we should stop cutting down the trees. I am here from Perth ...to have my little say to try and help save these trees. Because if we don’t save them, not only will the creeks run dry, but we will all be without water. I am 91 in October this year, so this story has stayed with me a very long time. I don’t see things getting any better across the world though, so who is listening? We have only got to look at the dryness in our state to realize the danger ahead if we don’t take action now. So here I am because I know my dad would be proud of what we are doing here today. 10.01.2022 This little forest wonder doesn't know it yet, but he's going to have to pack up and move. 33% of his forest will be logged, bulldozed, burnt, detonated and min...ed courtesy of Alcoa's Huntly mine which got approval in the 1970's. It's 2021 and our south west has already warmed by 1 degree, yet the Jarrah forest will be cleared and mined 50% faster than it is now if Alcoa gets the green tick of approval.
