25.01.2022 AFRICAN REGION CERTIFIED WILD POLIO-FREE The African region has just been certified wild poliovirus-free. Rotary members have played an invaluable role in the effort to rid the African region of wild polio. Rotarians are proud of all the hard work they have done to eliminate the wild poliovirus throughout Africa and in nearly every country in the world.... This progress is the result of a decades-long effort across the 47 countries of the African region. It has involved millions of health workers traveling by foot, boat, bike and bus, innovative strategies to vaccinate children amid conflict and insecurity, and a huge disease surveillance network to test cases of paralysis and check sewage for the virus. Over the last two decades, countless Rotary members in countries across the African region and around the world have worked together to raise funds, immunize children, advocate with local and national leaders, and raise awareness about the importance of vaccination, enabling the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to effectively respond to and stop polio outbreaks. This milestone is an incredible public health achievement for Rotary members, the African region, and GPEI partners, and a huge step forward on the road to global polio eradication. But Rotary still has important work to do in order to eradicate wild polio in the last two endemic countries. Rotary has faced many challenges in its journey to eradicate polio. But has made remarkable progress, and the polio infrastructure that Rotarians helped build will serve as a lasting legacy that will continue to help protect vulnerable children against other diseases for decades to come. Rotarians are being called on to recommit to ending polio. Each and every one of them is needed to help finish this fight and continue raising $50 million each year for Polio Plus. The eradication of wild polio in the African region shows that polio eradication is achievable, and shows how Rotary's hard work, partnerships and financial commitment continue to propel the project forward, even during a global pandemic. 22.01.2022 Three crates of clothes, materials and equipment has been sent off on its journey to Timor. Gordon Temby came up with the idea to support the fire brigade in Dili, and collected one and a half crates of fire protective clothing and helmets no longer used by the Wallcliffe bushfire brigade. In addition to the fire protective clothing and helmets, other goods collected included sewing machines for womens cooperative groups in Timor, full bedding sets (sheets, towels, pillow c...ases) for clinics and schools courtesy of the Lions Club of Boyup Brooke, childrens sports uniforms from Lions MR, material to make kits for the Days for Girls program, and some non-perishable medical supplies for the clinic in Baucau. It is impossible to thank all the donors individually as many of the goods were donated anonymously. However the goods have been packed and are on their way after an extended collection and organising program. We were able to obtain back-loading transport for the 3 crates to Melbourne Rotary Club for trans-shipment to Dili in their 6-weekly container program. Last Friday we loaded the 3 crates, about 700kg all up, on a trailer and took to Saidlers depot in Kewdale where a very helpful team on the ground unloaded us and took charge of the crates. The crates should arrive in Dili early January. On-ground staff of Rotarians Helping People (Mario and Judite) in Dili will handle the distribution. Unfortunately the crates will arrive a short while after our Rotary Club Leavers Experience students are in Timor. Although there have been some delays and difficulties in getting this project completed we have a process that works and is relatively easy to put in place, it potentially gives us more opportunities to send goods that the Timorese really need and can be effectively used.

17.01.2022 Travellers returning from overseas bring back with them leftover coins and bank notes. Small amounts of coins and small denomination notes in particular cannot be converted back to Australia currency. Rotary however can collect foreign coins and notes from hundreds of people across the community and convert these into funds for Rotary projects supporting health, education and welfare of people especially children. Over the last eight years over $300,000 dollars has been raised across Australia by the coin and note collection program. Please help us by dropping your unwanted currency into the collecting bucket at the Beach Life Surf Shop at 121 Bussell Highway on Margaret River Main Street.

Th...e Club applauded Gary's leadership of our 'sea-change, tree-change' community where the main economic driver is tourism, but where there are many competing priorities. Rotary Clubs around the world have the opportunity to recognise those who make significant contributions to their communities. They do this by donating to The Rotary Foundation to fund its ongoing global educational and humanitarian projects. By contributing in this way the Rotary Club of Margaret River was authorised to officially recognise Garys inspiring and transformational leadership in our own community by awarding him a Paul Harris Fellowship.. 04.01.2022 Rotary Youth leadership Awards (RYLA) participants Kate Mann, Tess Mann and Louise Dumpleton very recently returned from the RYLA camp. They spoke about what they felt they gained from the RYLA experience. They showed a brief video taken by one of the leaders which was valuable for the Rotarians as it gave a taste of some of the activities that took place at the camp. The enthusiasm of the three girls, who thanked Rotary for sponsoring them was particularly rewarding to club members who now have a better understanding of the value of the activity and whether it is worth continuing to promote RYLA. The answer is a resounding YES!
