23.01.2022 Our favourite spices starting with the letter C - Cinnamon, Cardamom and Cumin - and they are pretty powerful little things! Cinnamon is used widely and regularly for an array of health conditions, but it is most well studied for its capability to regulate blood sugar. It also helps with digestion, water retention and muscle spasms. Cardamom, otherwise known as The Queen of Spices can be used to curb bloating and gas, calm the nervous system, stimulate the blood, increase lib...ido and assist with weight loss. Cumin can help simulate secretion of pancreatic enzymes needed for digestion and nutrient absorption and enhance the liver’s detoxification enzymes. Time to stock up and get cooking!

20.01.2022 *Yin Yoga for Adrenal Support* Pose # 2: Sphinx. After doing Butterfly pose, counter this with a fold in the opposite direction by sliding down onto your belly. Option one is to place a pillow or 2 underneath your armpits and rest the chest and chin down onto this as support. This will create just a mild back-bend. The aim is to feel a gentle squeezing... sensation into the mid lower back, around the kidney area. If this is enough, stay here, or if you want to increase the sensation, come up and rest your weight into your forearms, with your palms facing into the earth. Relax the backs of the legs, the gluteal muscles and your shoulders. Be soft, be still, and breathe for 3-5 minutes. This shape tones the space in the lower back which houses our vital energy. If you feel particularly tired or sluggish, then this shape may help. To come out, remove any props, and come down to rest flat onto the floor, one cheek resting on the backs of your hands like a pillow. Allow the lower back to come out of the compression, and use your minds eye to 'flush'out the kidney/lower back space.

19.01.2022 *Elecampane - the key lung herb* A herb that works very well with echinacea for treating the common cold, pneumonia, influenza and any congestion in the lower respiratory system. Medicinal actions: Diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, alterative, antimicrobial & anti-parasitic.... Medicinal use: Elecampane is most known for helping treat chronic lung conditions. It acts as a warming expectorant as well as being anti-inflammatory, immunostimulatory and gently sedating. It is most indicated in irritating bronchial coughs and can be used for all ages, from children to the elderly. Additionally, Elecampane is a warming digestive bitter that helps support the digestive tract. It has traditional use as an antiseptic and can be used topically as an antimicrobial. A wonderful herb that could prove useful at this time. For further questions speak to Georgie, or enquire about our immune support herbal mixes.

Long regarded as a rasayana in Ayurvedic medicine, Shatavari is a nutritive tonic and adaptogen, energising and strengthening us. 19.01.2022 *Yin Yoga for Adrenal Support* Our Wellness Tip this week comes from Georgie, who as well as being our Naturopath, is also a yoga teacher. This brief yin yoga sequence she has put together focuses on adrenal health and is helpful for calming the nervous system in general. When doing yin, make sure you are fully comfortable, and able to relax your muscles. Use your props!... This is the first pose of the sequence. 1. Butterfly Pose Bring the soles of your feet together, in a diamond shape, not too close to the groin. Prop your knees up with blocks, cushions, or blankets if desired.. You can also sit on a blanket to elevate the hips if your back/hamstrings are quite tight. Begin to fold forward, forehead towards the feet, using the help of a bolster or blanket if necessary. You want your head to be supported, so let your forehead either rest on your feet, a blanket, cushion, or block. Allow the whole back line of your torso to gently open out, and focus on breathing either through the back of your heart or through your kidneys. Stay for 3-6 minutes, focusing on your breath and softening your body. To come out, inhale, and gently press up onto the hands, lift the chest, then lean back into the hands and rest for around 20-30 seconds, or longer if needed. This pose is a key pose for the kidney/urinary bladder meridian lines, and particularly beneficial for insomnia. If you cant sleep, try this pose for 10 minutes or so, then go back to bed. Stay tuned for the next pose in the sequence, or look to your email inbox for the full sequence.

18.01.2022 'Manopause’ What is it and why you should care. For you, your partner, husband, father, brother or the men in our lives. Are you or the men in your life feeling tired, a little flat ? 16.01.2022 Herb of the week: *Schisandra chinensis* A brilliant herb for its versatility. Its medicinal actions include: nervous system tonic, mild anti-depressant, adaptogen, adrenal tonic, regulator of blood glucose & mucosal secretions, antioxidant, astringent, anti-tussive, lung tonic, anti-cholesterol and hepatoprotective. We often use it here in the clinic as a herb for increasing resistance to stressors, to increase energy and vitality in combination with other herbs, as a liver... support and for womens hormonal support. It is also brilliant in a herbal mix for increasing overall vitality and stamina, recovery and physical and mental performance, making it a prime herb for athletes. Schisandra can be taken in capsules, liquid herbs, or as a tea.

16.01.2022 *NET therapy* You may have heard of this but what is it exactly? This is a technique that some practitioners use (including Dr Siobhan) in conjunction to their other modalities. Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is a mind-body approach that focuses on the treatment of stress-related conditions. The technique determines the relationship between emotional health, environmental toxicity, nutritional balance, and the structural integrity of the body. Once the relationship is determ...ined, they can be bought back to a more harmonious state. NET is a very complex practise, and one that can be very uncomfortable to go through, in that it asks some uncomfortable questions. However, for anyone wanting to grasp the connection between their emotional health and their physical health, it is fascinating and can be extremely effective. For more information, give us a call on 9758 7888 or book an NET appointment with Dr Siobhan.

15.01.2022 Spotlight on *Estrogen* Or more specifically, estradiol. Estrogen refers collectively to estradiol, estriol and estrone, but we will focus on estradiol today. Estradiol:... The most potent form of estrogen made by the ovaries and in small amounts from the adrenal glands. (adrenals and fat cells after peri-menopause). Stimulates the growth and function of tissue, such as development of breasts and reproductive organs and increasing muscle mass. Involved in the synthesis and function of neurotransmitters that affect sleep, mood, memory, libido, and cognitive factors such as learning and attention span. Decreases the perception of pain, preserves bone mass, and increases HDL cholesterol. Preserves the elasticity and moisture content of the skin, dilates blood vessels, and prevents plaque formation in blood vessel walls. Promotes insulin sensitivity, reduces insulin resistance and increases metabolic flexibility (eg., can adapt to burning carbohydrates, fats or proteins more easefully). It also helps level appetite by it’s ‘leptin like’ influence on the brain. Pretty powerful yes? And something that we definitely want enough of! Like everything else in the body, things go wrong when we have too much or too little of something. Come in and speak to Georgie if you feel as though something might be up (or down) with your estrodiol levels.

03.01.2022 This muscle is a large one that connect your arms to your low back. This tends to get shorten when you have a bad posture, so let’s stretch it! You might feel much better in your shoulders after this. 1. Stand with your legs wide apart. 2. Extend your arms above your head with your right hand facing to outside. Hold right wrist with the other hand and gently pull upward. 3. While pulling up arm, lean to opposite side gently. Focus on the feeling your right scapula starting ...to pull away from ribs. You will feel a deeper stretch in your right Lats muscle. 4. Hold this position for 30 seconds or 1 minute with breaths each side. An even better option is to combine this stretch with some of the pectoral stretches, as demonstrated by Dr Clay on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch

03.01.2022 Spotlight on *Persimmons* Such a delicious fruit! They are sort of half apple, half tomato, half orange. That's three halves but anyway... Persimmons are extremely high in vitamins A and C. In fact one persimmon contains over half your RDI of Vitamin A, and almost a quarter RDI of Vitamin C. They also contain good amounts of vitamin E, K, and B6. Any food that contains B6 is a winner in our books,as this particular B vitamin is used for so many treatment plans, from mental he...alth, to reproductive health to energy support. They also have lots of antioxidants and flavanoids which help combat free radical damage. This helps your internal health (heart health, digestion, immune function ect), as well as your external skin, eyes and nail health. Combined with their vitamin E content, they could be considered a great food for promoting glowy smooth skin, and clear bright eyes. Luckily for all of us, it is persimmon season, so stock up while you can!
