25.01.2022 "Of Course It's a Kiwi" 20 x 20 cms Fused and raw glass, smalti, china, slate, apoxie sculpt and thinset. This is my entry into to the NZ Mosaic Association Online Exhibition. I really struggled working on such a small substrate. But as, I suspect the lone Aussie entrant, I had to mention Kiwi. Do have a browse - the quality of the work and talent of the artists, is worth enjoying.... https://nzmosaicart.co.nz//online/aotearoa-september-2020/ See more
25.01.2022 'Cassowary' has found a permanent home. Such a lovely little piece that I made from slate ( mostly) and on slate. A couple of pieces of smalti and some stone have also made an appearance, but the slate stars.
24.01.2022 The Blue Wren commission.2. A few more hours have got the little bird itself virtually finished. Now I can turn my attention to the background, though so far, I haven't got a clear idea where I am going with it. Incorporateing that beautiful glazed mug was a challenge but it was so exactly right with the curve and the lovely colours.
24.01.2022 Art gallery visits are always so inspiring https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10217742719303742&id=1353680395
23.01.2022 I'm away from home for a few days but before I left, I made and polished a slate frame...at the moment I'm just introducing ideas to contemplate while I'm away.
22.01.2022 One of my pendants has reached it's new owner and has even been named. 'Poppies in the Field' Thank you Michelle.
19.01.2022 'Do I look good in this?' 2018 This was a mix of glass fusions and colourful china. The new owner pointed out that this could be viewed in two orientations.
18.01.2022 'Drinking from the Fire' I started as I often do, with a white china plate. I have had the little copper foiled stained glass bird for ages - it's tail was partly detached. The curves just matched so I used more foil to join the plate segments before I glued them down. The three types of marble I cut with the hammer and hardie. They are lovely colours, but soft and crumbly by texture
18.01.2022 WIP.. At this stage, I look at the photo and think...hmm there's a problem.
18.01.2022 'Superb Blue Wren..20x30cms China, fused glass, smalti, hand made filati, copper wire, rust wire and road stone with tinted thinset. The background doesn't look quite so prominent in real life, but I may change it anyway. I think the bird needs to be front and center ( or off-centre) in this piece.
17.01.2022 I used some historical fish drawings as guides to the shape and form of this series. The fish eyes are fused by me in a microwave kiln. The shapes come from various pieces of crockery and I use the rims, handles and curves differently each time. Every one is unique.
16.01.2022 "Harey" I used a precut shape made by Robby Towill as a basis for this hare. I had a glass fusion for the eye and a handle base for the nose, as a start and built on that. From there I used offcuts and bits from previous works ( I have lots of them) and didn't use a grinder or saw, at all. I stuck to the nippers for any rough shaping and fitting.... Surprisingly, there wasn't even much shaping needed at all and I stayed pretty much within the outline. #hares#mosaichare#mosaicart#margaretshawmosaics#mosaicartist See more
16.01.2022 'Harey' has arrived in his new home and has passed the CAT scan. The substrate is a cut out made by Robby Towill from a white floor tile. It makes the rest so easy
16.01.2022 'On the Beach' 30x20cms. I found some time to fill in the slate frame.. It's a lovely mix of slate, ammonites, beach glass, stone and some lovely fusions - thanks Tani. Oh and white gold smalti..how could I forget that I'll finish the tidying and give the slate a coat or two of wax to bring out the beautiful colour.
14.01.2022 I've had this pretty (but broken) little copper foil bird for a while...and then I was making a new piece and somehow, I found just the place for it.
13.01.2022 Just a minor hitch because I'm just too impatient... I used a different thinset, possibly not enough of it, too many small pieces and couldn't wait for it to set up properly and then I turned it!!! Rest easy though: no turkeys were hurt during the filming of this piece.
13.01.2022 'Superb Blue Wren'. 2020. So my gut feeling , the client and quite a few friends, were all of the same opinion, though diplomacy ruled. I really had to get my act together with the background The previous version just wasn't working. This one is softer, but still with some pink to pick up the pink splatters in the glaze.
13.01.2022 Bazza - the Beach Fish. This chap was started in a hurry, when I had adhesive left over after completing Jewel. It is an example of how as reference image can beused as only a rough guide...at least for me. I used the same reference image for Jewel. He is a bit flash with a real gold belt across his belly.
13.01.2022 Edit: the new owner got delivery today and is happy. "Phases" is phinished and ready to go to its new home. I got the grout as black as I could and the slate took the polish beautifully..

12.01.2022 Robby Towill has set me a challenge. She has made some brilliant 'cut out' substrates by reusing old floor tiles. They are solid, easy to work with and have an attached D ring, so are ready to hang. All I need to do it make a hare for her.
12.01.2022 Do I look like a turkey in this hat? This is my version of a guineafowl. I've used smalti, fused glass, filati ( yeah) , slate and stones with thinset. Once everything sets up, I'll give it a clean and transfer it to a substrate. #mosaicartwork#Mosaicartistsoftheworld... #notaturkey#guineafowl#guineahen See more
10.01.2022 'Where is the point of it all?' 24x30 cms. Slate, china, marble, fossils and reconfigured glass fusions. I am repeatedly mesmerised by the beautiful lines and patterns revealed, when I polish and wax slate. Thus - another attempt to to integrate other materials to somehow follow and extend those lines. I define success as creating visual interest for the viewer.

10.01.2022 "The Pest Controller" 20x 40 cms Available. Fused glass, sea glass and smalti, carnelian, slate and pottery. The slight mishap this bird had during construction gave me the chance to realign some pieces, so it definitely became a guinea fowl. She has a very eager look about her as she hunts for insects. #mosaicart #guineafowl #womenartists #stoneandglass #guineahen #thepestcontroller #glassfusions
08.01.2022 A pendant or two. At least one of these will have a new home tomorrow. I have more pendant trays now so I'll be playing with some more colour combinations. Any suggestions?
07.01.2022 I see an owl in my future... https://www.facebook.com/651029331697623/posts/2120767161390492/
07.01.2022 Lots of different fragments can make a picture. This one is definitely made out of scraps.
05.01.2022 WIP. I do like how this bit has turned out. The fossil is from Redcar in the North of England. It's called a devil's toenail

02.01.2022 Like so many exhibitions, Downlandsart has gone completely digital this year. I was fortunate to be invited to participate as one of a group of artists to test out the new website. Please share to your network so that the word can get out there. Congratulations Evan Hollis for your hard work. https://www.downlandsart.com/artists/margaret-shaw/
