25.01.2022 This butcher bird has been visiting us every morning as soon as I open the blinds. It is so friendly. But, we move tomorrow so I wonder if it will miss us when we're gone? #earlybird #goodmorning

25.01.2022 Monday morning short story. Drinking Tea And Eating Oranges by M Ainsley Blackman https://link.medium.com/hqI7nSRfL9

23.01.2022 What is Cottonmouth? Cottonmouth was a monthly zine and performance poetry night, hosted by the @rosemount_hotel back in the 00's. I used to contribute short fiction to the zine and sometimes went to the performance nights. Poetry + alcohol = fun times. I found three of these zines in our recent house move. I have revised and published my writing and it's available to read on my Medium account (link on FB). #creativewriting

22.01.2022 This is the second of the Cottonmouth works that I'll be publishing this week. I'm almost too embarrassed to share it, even after editing it! However, life is too short to be embarrassed nor too serious. You might be able to tell that I was the sort of young person who frequented poetry performance nights....

22.01.2022 I haven't been very active on social media lately as I have a lot of "life stuff" going on, some exciting, some stressful. So this morning I put aside ten minutes for some gardening. Very calming! If you would like to purchase cards or artwork, I am still taking orders so drop me a message. Happy Saturday, everyone. #gardentherapy

20.01.2022 What tales will these shadow puppets tell? I'm joining Folktale week so follow to find out... #folktaleweek

19.01.2022 Will-o'-the-wisp, for @inktober20 day 2 prompt 'wisp'. I challenged myself to draw this entirely with hatching. "Will-o'-the-wisp" is a flame-like phosphorescence caused by gases from decaying plants in marshy areas. In olden days, it was personified as "Will with the wisp", a sprite who carried a fleeting 'wisp' of light. Foolish travellers were said to try to follow the light and were then led astray into the marsh. #drawingoftheday #inktober2020

19.01.2022 Folktale week day 3 courtship Watercolour pencil #folktaleweek

16.01.2022 First @inktober20 drawing done. I felt these fish needed to be drawn using pointillism. #inktober

16.01.2022 Love a good shelfie! We recently moved back to our newly renovated house and my first priority is always sorting out the book shelves... #shelfiesunday #childrensbooks

15.01.2022 Friday flash fiction.

15.01.2022 Happy Lunar New Year!

13.01.2022 I'm from Perth, WA, so I pay my respects to the traditional owners of this land, the Nyoongar people.

11.01.2022 Folktale week illustration, day 1 "birth". Watercolour pencil #folktaleweek

10.01.2022 Happy International Day of the Older Person! Do you have a special older person in your life? Or are you the special older person in a child's life? #idop #readingwithgrandma

10.01.2022 What witchy spells are contained within this book? @inktober20 Day 3 prompt "bulky" #inktober #bookofspells

09.01.2022 I'm working on a short story for children and it features a coral baton and a school of dancing fish, so I had to draw what a school of fish swimming in synchrony looks like. School of fish, ink #drawingoftheday

08.01.2022 I will be reviewing Oliver Sacks' River of Consciousness in next month's book review. Here's a taster.

05.01.2022 If you read my September book review column last week and can't wait to hear about what I'll be reviewing for the next one, then read on!

05.01.2022 Quote Of The Day (September 21, 2020) by M Ainsley Blackman https://link.medium.com/nSlSs6mDX9

04.01.2022 Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking. Maria love books and everything book-related. Maria loves alphabetical order. Maria is a book nerd. If you are also a proud book nerd, let me know your thoughts on bookshelf organisation.

04.01.2022 Folktale week illustration day 2, ritual. Watercolour pencil #folktaleweek

04.01.2022 This is the last of the Cottonmouth pieces from 2009. I think it's kind of funny, though the satire is maybe a little overdone.

03.01.2022 My latest book review for The Innovation on Medium is up. This month I reviewed non-fiction by Arundhati Roy and Oliver Sacks.

02.01.2022 I saw a flock of cockatoos flying across the sky yesterday. It was quite the sight of movement and mass. Watercolour pencil and ink #drawingoftheday

02.01.2022 It's Love Your Bookshop Day! A whole day to celebrate all the joy, fun and knowledge that bookshops bring us. Sadly, some of the indie bookshops in my area are no longer but we still have the wonderful Dymocks Books in Subiaco which has a great children's selection, plus more.

01.01.2022 I've found some short fiction I had published in a zine when I was in my twenties. I've edited them and will be publishing them through Medium. They range from deadly serious to youthfully pretentious. The things you find when you move house!

01.01.2022 Happy International Literacy Day! Thank you to all my hard-working teacher friends who care so much about literacy.

01.01.2022 I was proud to be a part of the Bushfire fundraiser raffle organised by Henry & Martha . We raised over $4000! So today I sent the Blue Shag off to it's lucky winner. If you would like a Blue Shag for yourself or to share with someone else, I still have cards available. $12 for a set of 5, plus $3 postage (within Australia). Message me for more info.
