23.01.2022 Another Kangaroo Paw which has done well in a tub is Anigozanthos Bush Bonanza. This photo was taken a week ago. It has been flowering non-stop for months now. Not all of the Kangaroo Paws available in nurseries are as hardy as these. The only one I've found that will survive in the ground here is Anigozanthos flavidus. Normally a muddy green colour it grows in a large clump and is a real bird magnet. I have a rusty red form in the garden. Kangaroo Paws should be cut back in Autumn/winter like many other strappy plants. They will grow new leaves in spring. Flowers last for months and appear in summer. Large clumps should be divided.

16.01.2022 Banksia repens One of those amazing Banksias from WA which spread by underground stem so that the brushes appear to be sitting on the ground. Grows to 40 cm high/. Flowering in Spring Grows naturally in sandy soils on the south coast of Western Australia. Prostrate shrub with horizontal underground stems and large grey lobed leathery upright leaves which appear to rise from the ground. The 10 cm high upright cones which appear to sit on the ground may vary from orange to tan and pink, fading to a greyish colour. Moderately frost and drought hardy, best grown in sandy well-drained soil in full sun. They will form a small thicket. Mulch with sand. Low fertiliser requirements. Foreground shrub, rockeries, tubs. Attracts birds

12.01.2022 February has turned out to be such a surprise. The warm (but not hot) temperatures and high humidity is resulting in amazing growth - the lawn needs to be mown almost every second day and the garden has sprung into life again. One species which is a mainstay of my garden is Dodonaea viscosa -the native hop bush. These plants have come through the drought totally unscathed. They are great for providing structure as an understorey shrub in a bush garden or a vertical accent in an ornamental garden. You can grow other plants underneath as they don't rob the ground of nutrients. They vary in leaf size and shape. The one I have for sale at the moment came from the Stanthorpe granite belt.

11.01.2022 Correa Candy Pink (syn Pink Pixie, Mallee Pink, Powder Bells) 1m x 1m Fl. Autumn - Spring Believed to be one of Jim Hartshorne's breedings in Canberra in the 1970's. Dense rounded shrub with short mid pink bells which are split to expose a pale pink throat. Long lived, frost/drought hardy, well-drained soil, full sun to semi-shade. Foreground shrub, rockeries, tubs. Attracts birds.

10.01.2022 It's always nice to get a compliment from a satisfied customer. 'I need to compliment you on the quality of your plants (25 small tubes). Very healthy with plenty of growth, including roots. Your plants are far superior to other online retailers. Over the years I have bought tube stock from quite a few online retailers and their stock usually have just adequate root development. Excellent value in terms of health, size and root development at sale. Excellent packaging. I have previously purchased plants from Cool Natives Nursery and have no hesitation in doing so again. By the way, my order arrived by courier the next day. Impressive given that whilst I live in NSW, I do not live anywhere near Armidale.

08.01.2022 Maria Hitchcock talks about the nursery and some of the plants she has for sale.

01.01.2022 It's been an amazing few months dealing with Covid19 - the nursery was very busy for a while and I ended up with very little stock left. Fortunately I'd put in a lot of cuttings over summer thinking the drought would break. That was a wise decision as it turned out. I have a lot of small plants growing on for spring and will feature the best of these on this FB page. We've had some pretty hard frosts and snow in Armidale so far this winter. I've always put the West Australian... emblem Anigozanthos manglesii in the too hard basket. When a plant came up for sale at Bunnings I decided to give it another go but this time in a deep pot under cover and where it gets a daily watering. Success! It has been flowering for months now and the plant seems to be tolerating the cold conditions. Don't have any for sale at the moment but should have some over summer. The photo was taken a few days ago in the garden. See more
