25.01.2022 As yogis we spend a lot of time on our yoga mats. Have you ever thought about the germs your beloved mat might be picking up to and from? We roll it out at home, at yoga class, and maybe even your local park. But how often do you actually clean your yoga mat? When we roll up our mats after practice, we are rolling all of the germs, dirt and grime and whatever is on the floor beneath us. These microbes will remain on the surface of the mat where we put our hands, feet and ...even face. This DIY yoga mat cleaner spray is made with two simple essential oils: tea tree and thieves, both of which have antibacterial and antifunga properties. You can also add lavender essential oil to the mix. It is an antibacterial oil with a relaxing and calming scent that relieves tension and is great for unwinding post-yoga. And ... if you arent a fan of tea tree oil, you can substitute it with another antibacterial oil such as lemongrass, eucalyptus, or peppermint. You also dont have to settle at just two oils you can mix-and-match with oils you love. Give your yoga mat a little extra love with this low tox cleaning solution

25.01.2022 YOGA teaches us so much if we let it - how to destress, quieten the mind, to open our hearts, to be brave but kind, resilient yet compassionate and also how to look after the immunity of our body. Yoga teaches us to listen to what our heart and body needs and so much more

24.01.2022 Join me for a warming winter vinyasa practice this term. We will focus on the upper thoracic area which is affected by the sitting syndrome we have developed in our modern life (probably more so since Covid). The rounded posture of sitting in front of a computer, driving a car or even sitting in front of the TV closes the heart centre. This causes our breathing to become shallow and this increases feelings of stress and fatigue. We will also pay particular attention to re...leasing hips. There can be a tremendous amount of tension held in the muscles and tissues surrounding the pelvis. An hip opening practice is a great way to release this tension & open up the torso & assist in alignment of the whole body. Moving the ball & socket joint through a whole range of motion helps create supple hips. This in turn can ease back pain & assists in this alignment. And .... as always the heart of our practice is our breathwork. For details go to link in Bio. *Please note Monday classes require a booking

22.01.2022 LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE - client love. So happy to receive this feedback

21.01.2022 Health is created by our daily habits and decisions - we cant just wait till the situation is perfect to make changes and hope they will hold. Sometimes making changes is uncomfortable but worth it in the long run, and even in times of stress just stay focused on one day at a time. Create your own wellness

21.01.2022 Our neck area contains 1/3 of all lymph nodes in the body. People can experience problems with head, sinuses, ears, thyroid and tonsils when these lymph nodes are congested. As the Glymphatic system removes toxins from the head through the lymph in the chest area, then the liver and finally the gut and colon if there are any areas of drainage congestion along the way these toxins back up around the neck and head. If you experience these symptoms it is essential to understand where and why these blockages are occurring but if you want to learn some techniques you can use at home to decongest your lymphatic system especially around the neck give Marianne a call on 0417875718.

19.01.2022 AUTUMN ARRIVES IN BRISBANE - and many of us are ready to shed the warmth & heat from summer & welcome cooler days and nights. In yoga as we transition into Autumn the focus is on a centering & grounding practice which supports the lungs (and immunity) and intestinal fire (Agni) to keep digestion healthy. These are the organs associated with autumn they release what we no longer need & help to nourish us. The physiological functions of these organs align with their energe...tic function: the lungs govern respiration & the large Intestine governs elimination. Imbalance of both organ systems can present as upper respiratory symptoms (runny nose, cough, hoarse voice, etc.) and constipation, IBS and poor digestion. "Agni is the powerful transformative energy that breaks down and converts food into fuel for our bodies' trillion cells." Good digestion & a healthy metabolism are absolutely essential for a healthy life. As always there will also be a focus on breath & a reminder to us to move into stillness finding time out from all the stimulation and stressors of the world around us. These factors create stress in the mind and therefore the whole body leading to lack of focus & energy. Classes: Monday 6.15pm Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre, Thallon St, Sherwood Tuesday 9am Thursday 8.30am both at Centenary Theatre, Cnr Halsbury & Queenscroft Streets, Chelmer For more information call Marianne 0417875718 #brisbaneyoga #yogaclasses #vinyin #vinyasaflow #yoga

19.01.2022 REMEMBER TO BE IN THE MOMENT - especially in times where anxiety and stress are heightened. Dont miss those moments of joy or quiet - they are what sustain us

19.01.2022 SUNDAY MORNINGS - time for mindfulness and reflection.

18.01.2022 Is your body feeling sluggish? Do you feel run down? Are you experiencing brain fog? Maybe your Lymphatic System needs some support.

18.01.2022 COLD WINTER DAYS CALL FOR INDULGENT SNACKS - this is my quick go to when we want a sustaining snack. I toast organic oats and quinoa flakes, mix them with nuts, seeds and coconut and then bind it together with almond nut butter and some rice malt syrup. Although this is definitely a treat - it is sustaining and full of fibre, zinc, protein, essential fatty aicds and Vitamin E. See recipe here:... http://www.naturopathbrisbanewest.com//no-bake-almond-but/ See more

17.01.2022 HOME BAKING - spending more time at home, many of us are taking the opportunity to enjoy doing some baking. Many homemade treats are very high in refined sugar & flours. Highly processed sugar and flour is very inflammatory to our bodies and negatively impact our immune systems. This Raspberry and Coconut Loaf contains minimal and less refined sweeteners as well containing nutrients which support our health and energy. We always need to remember that treats in any form are just that and should be included in the diet occasionally, not regularly. See recipe here. http://www.naturopathbrisbanewest.com//raspberry-and-coco/

16.01.2022 WHEN YOUR FRIEND GIVES YOU LOTS OF ORGANIC LEMONS make preserved lemons. These taste amazing once they have been left for 4 weeks. In this time the tartness almost disappears but the delicious lemon flavour of the peel remains. Originating from the Middle East, preserved lemons are great for adding to all sorts of dishes such as tagines, stews, curries, grilled & BBQ meat, salads, marinades & dressings. Whats good about them?:... Lemons are high in vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C has potent antioxidant properties to neutralize free radicals and protect cells and blood vessels from damage and inflammation as well as boosting immunity and nurturing our skin. Potassium stimulates brain and nerve function and helps control blood pressure. They contain soluble pectin fiber found predominantly in the peel studies show this promotes long-lasting fullness, can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and decrease risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease and diabetes. Limonene is an essential oil found in citrus fruit peels. Not only has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress, and possibly disease-preventing properties but has mood boosting properties. Method: Use the type of lemon you like best. Organic is preferred as the oil comes out of the peel. If you cant get organic make sure you scrub the skins well. Have a few sterilised glass jars with good sealing lids ready. Cut a slit two ways in the lemon about of the way through. Using Himalayan or celtic sea salt add approx. 1 tablespoon of salt to each lemon depending on its size. Place the lemons in the jars, squashing them in as tightly as you can without breaking the jar. Then add enough fresh lemon juice to cover the lemons well & let them sit for three weeks, turning them upside down every few days to ensure the lemon juice and salt is well distributed. You can also add any herbs (rosemary, thyme or pepper) or whatever suits your taste. Keep the jars in a cool dark cupboard. Once you open a jar make sure you keep it in the fridge.

16.01.2022 Fennel find whilst shopping at the mid-week local markets - roasting it gently and will grate a little Parmesan over it. Fennel gets a bad rap but its delicious & versatile and very high in fibre. Crunchy, fresh and aromatic when raw, it turns silky when roasted or braised. Full of potassium it helps regulate blood pressure & kidney function. It also contains Vitamin A, C and Vitamin B6. It helps the production of breast milk, and recent research shows it can help to ease menopausal symptoms. There are so many delicious and simple ways to cook or prepare fennel - as with most vegies

16.01.2022 CARDAMOM not so well known as turmeric and cinnamon but a favourite of mine. This fragrant spice, used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine, has so many health benefits and perfect for current times. Its main use is for alleviating digestive problems but also very beneficial for respiratory health. Digestive Support acid from tea and coffee (*try putting a little into your coffee to make it more alkaline!), spicy foods and a diet heavy in meat can irritate the gut, leadi...ng to an increase of gas-producing mucus that then makes congestive ingredients such as milk, cheese, wheat & rye much more difficult to digest. It turns out that the tiny cardamom seeds reduce mucus buildup caused by heavy foods AND contain natural carminatives which reduce gas. While it stimulates the stomach, gall bladder & salivary glands, it reduces feelings of bloating. Respiratory Health being one of the richest sources of the phytochemical cineole, makes it a potent antiseptic for respiratory conditions, sore throats, gum disease and bad breath. Circulation another ingredient, camphor, is great for boosting blood circulation. Combined with borneol and eucalyptol, it makes cardamom an antibacterial, antispasmodic, and mood enhancing spice. This effect can be helpful during menstruation by lessening pain. Use it during winter as its warming and stimulating. Grind the seeds or use the powder in chai drinks or in tea or coffee for its alkalising effect. Suck on the seeds after meals for digestive support & for sore throats or make use of its spicy sweetness in your cooking.

15.01.2022 YESTERDAY WAS WORLD FOOD DAY & IT IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH in my opinion these two are intertwined. Why?? In an age where everything is about speed and convenience, many people think fast food, preprepared food or convenience food is ‘the norm’. but there is a connection between what & how we eat & the state of our health including mental health. Due to the ‘busyness’ of life there has been move away from actually preparing food. Preparing our own food takes... thought, organisation, shopping (preferably at markets), time & also most importantly care and love. This is getting back to basics. Michael Pollan specialises in writing about the food industry, health & environmental sustainability. He has other thought provoking mantras such as: If it came from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don’t. Cook. Cooking for yourself takes back control of your diet. No snacks, no seconds, no sweets except on days that start with S. Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognise as food. "Always leave the table a little hungry." Reflecting on these statements it reminds us that if we prepare & eat meals in a more traditional manner - rather than expecting food in minutes & doing something else while we eat we will digest, absorb, enjoy and savour the food. Otherwise we are just going through the motions of eating and very often end up feeling very unsatisfied on a physical & mental level. This leaves us craving more food & we don't absorb the nutrients needed to make neurotransmitters such as Serotonin and Dopamine. By buying locally (preferably at markets) and what is in season not only does this give back to our community, it is environmentally much more friendly. However the biggest take home (no pun intended) is the fact that the food we buy and prepare is also much higher in actual nutrients. It’s okay if you are a busy parent who needs a quick meal, or a snack to throw in the lunchbox, - a fast & convenient option is sometimes necessary. Also, all of us have cravings, special occasions, or days (or weeks) when we life doesn’t come together for us. Sometimes we just need ideas as to how to get more vegetables into our day, or which packaged options are better products. Keeping ‘Eat (real) food. Not too much. Mostly plants. & similar mantras in the back of our mind when we plan what to eat each day will make health easier. If you need help & clear advice on better individual food options & better ways of preparing foods to make healthier eating a daily routine, call Marianne on 0417875718 and see how she can help you.

14.01.2022 BREATHE ON PURPOSE - while everyone breathes many of us dont breathe properly. A full breath means filing the entire lungs, expanding the chest, the side of the body and the belly but with minimal movement in the shoulders. This is conscious breathing and it:... reduces stress and blood pressure. supports mood. increases circulation and reduces toxins. improves energy. helps us get a good nights sleep. reduces aging. Take time during your day to be aware of conscious breathing and feel the benefits.

14.01.2022 THE FOOD COMPATIBILITY HAIR TEST is a simple and fast way to improve your health. The test involves sending a small sample of your hair to be tested against over 600 common foods, personal care products & household chemicals that we may come into contact with. Some of these will inflame your body interfering with good digestion, hormone balance, energy & detoxification. It determines how the food reacts to your chemical/electrical blueprint (in the strands of hair) electrical...ly. It can show you which foods interfere with the way your Mitochondria work, and by temporarily withdrawing certain foods (outlined in red on your report) you can improve your cellular function. Good cellular function leads to good organ function & improved health. Your report will outline exactly the foods & other products to avoid so that you can start to heal at a cellular levels. After 6 months you retest & you can then start to reintroduce foods slowly once the body can tolerate them again. If you would like more information about the Food Compatibility Hair Test call Marianne on 0417875718 or through email. 14.01.2022 The act of putting something into your mouth that the earth has grown is perhaps your most direct interaction with the earth. - Frances Moore Lappe. A beautiful reminder that not only does real food nourish us, it also connects us to the earth. Packaged or processed food contains no real nutrition - and doesnt nurture us in anyway. Food from the earth not only contains vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, but raises our energetic vibration - creating a sense of lightness and wellbeing in us.

14.01.2022 THE WORLD IS COLOURFUL

13.01.2022 The human body is made up of frequencies (or vibrations) that form a harmonious and balanced whole when a person is healthy. The vibrations of the body go out of balance when a person experiences physical or emotional stress, or negative habits (including fear, fatigue, rage, stress). Do you ever wonder why some of us seem more susceptible to illness to others? Our bodies have the power to heal but if our healthy cellular frequency is impacted for periods of time, our healin...g ability is compromised. If we raise our body’s vibration to a higher frequency is can break up blockages, releasing energy to flow freely. This stimulates our innate healing ability as well as helping us to dissolve stress and tension allowing us to feel calmer and more vital. The most effective ways to raise our cellular vibration: Gratitude Kindness Dancing Singing Meditation Yoga & Tai Chi Time in nature and sunshine Smiling Self Care & Self Love (time out, nutritious food, clean water). Thinking & speaking positively Let's vibrate higher

12.01.2022 SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION IS A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO DEVELOPMENT & PROGRESSION OF ALL CHRONIC DISEASES & CONDITIONS including Adenomyosis and Endometriosis. Last night I made a Quick Chicken Tagine with Preserved Lemons & was reminded how easy it can be (and how delicious) to eat meals that are loaded with anti-inflammatory ingredients. By removing inflammatory foods from our diet we can make a huge difference in relieving unwanted symptoms even in cases of Adenomyosis & End...ometriosis. I recommend to clients a few simple strategies to make their diet anti-inflammatory and these include: . Eat a wholefood diet: Wholefoods are generally those that remain close to their natural state grown in soil, animals that have lived on the soil and produced by animals that have lived on the soil. Our bodies are designed to thrive on natural foods and not man-made foods that often don’t resemble real food at all. Whole cooked foods are those that you have made yourself from natural ingredients. Eliminate inflammatory foods slowly from your diet and these include: processed foods, gluten, sugar, alcohol & certain oils (canola & soybean oil) & transfats. For many people cows dairy is inflammatory. Eat more plant foods: The standard western diet contains a high ratio of carbohydrates and meats and not enough plant based foods, resulting in a ratio that affects our health. Plant-based foods contain a wide range of key nutrients: vitamins, minerals, trace elements and phytonutrients. These are substances that are plant chemicals found in - fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts seeds, legumes and contribute to their colour, taste & smell. Phytochemicals are found in all edible parts of a plant, especially the skin or peel. Need some help making your diet less inflammatory? I can help work out strategies and changes that fit with your health condition and lifestyle. Recipe on request. Marianne #tagine #antiinflammatorydiet #adenomyosis #endometriosis

12.01.2022 POWER SOUPS - Nurturing & Restorative Green Soup was a soup I made up for a friend who had been diagnosed with cancer as it contains large amounts of cancer fighting & immune boosting foods, such as garlic, ginger, turmeric, broccoli and kale. This nurturing green soup will certainly surprise you with how good it tastes. Fresh ingredients and the addition of lemon make it light and slightly tangy. Sprinkle it with toasted pepitas (full of zinc) and if you choose you can to...p it with crispy tofu. Whats good about it? Turmeric has been linked to the prevention of cancer cell growth and management of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, eczema and inflammatory bowel disease. It is a nutritional powerhouse, rich in manganese, zinc, B group vitamins and iron. Ginger has potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It helps to boost immune function and combat cellular damage. Ginger also has a wonderful healing effect on the gut. Broccoli is full of alkalising, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer phytonutrients called sulforaphane that protect against disease. Its a true superfood rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C, E and CoQ10. Broccoli is also a wonderful source of B group vitamins, vitamin K, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and manganese. So much HEALING POWER in this dish. See recipe here: www.naturopathbrisbanewest.com//vege/nurturing-green-soup/

11.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY - I love this quote by the legendary Maty Ezrati where she encourages us to show kindness through smiling. Too often our lives are busy and stressful and we forget how a shared smile can lighten our day as well as the days of others.

11.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM IS A CRUCIAL PART OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM? As the weather starts to cool down it is essential we boost our immunity or build a strong & balanced Immune System (immune tolerance). External microbes bacteria, viruses, fungi etc are ‘received’ by our immune system which sends signals to various glands i.e. tonsils to mount an immune defence. Toxins are then sent to the lymph to be cleaned out. If our Lymphatic System is sluggish or congested ...our immunity will be weakened. We also need to ensure that our downstream detox systems are strong & working well too such as the liver, gallbladder, colon and kidneys. If you don’t know where to start get in touch and I would be happy to give you direction. Marianne #lymphaticdrainage #detoxyourbody #immunesupport

11.01.2022 I LOVE THIS - we need to understand that we never stop leaning and the best way to live our life is mindfully

11.01.2022 YOGA GIVES US WHAT WE NEED IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY. During these days of "Covid" many feel anxious and unsure about where life will take them. These wonderful words by Wayton Lewis sum up how our yoga practice (in whatever form is right for us) supports us and gives us the tools to navigate these times of uncertainty.

10.01.2022 YOGA CLASSES FOR THE YEAR FINISH TODAY. Thank you to all my beautiful students for the privilege of practicing yoga with them this year - especially with all its challenges. I love your humour, your commitment and the respect you have for those around you Namaste

10.01.2022 OUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM is the bodys rubbish disposal system and essential to good health. What is Lymph? Its the clear fluid (interstitial) that surrounds the cells of our body. Except for cartilage, nails, and hair, our entire body is bathed in lymph. Our hard working lymph system delivers nutrients that are squeezed into our interstitial fluid and then back into the blood. This clears out toxins as well as boosting immunity and balancing our fluid levels. Unlike the... blood it doesnt have the heart to pump it. It depends on us moving our bodies for circulation . And many of us dont move as much as we need to. Instead lymphatic fluid moves in one direction through lymph vessels towards the neck and finally the heart. The Lymphatic System is commonly overlooked when it comes to health. Many people wonder why they dont get better despite healthy living, therapy, supplements and medications. If the system isnt working well it cant get rid of cellular waste while trying to heal. Inflammation stays in our tissues causing congestion and discomfort because the body is toxic. We need to move our lymph daily and I can show you how to do this on a regular basis or if you would like to book in for a consultation and lymphatic massage, call me on 0417875718,

10.01.2022 The Qld government are making an application to Food Standards ANZ to extend the process of food irradiation (to kill bacteria and bugs etc) to ALL fresh fruits and vegetables for extended shelf life. 10.01.2022 Meditation .....

08.01.2022 KINDNESS - when we engage in acts of kindness we increase our production of serotonin - our feel good neurotransmitter - and reduce our cortisol levels by 23%! What a great way to feel good and de-stress. Kindness has many other benefits for our health including: - producing endorphins - our brain's natural painkiller. - it reduces anxiety.... - it releases oxytocin causing a release of nitric oxide which expands our blood vessels. This helps to reduce blood pressure and strengthens the heart. - Kindness involves expanding your compassion and connecting with other people. You form community networks & meaningful relationships. These help us live longer. - it raises our energetic vibration. Why not share a smile, help someone or make a donation today and see how it makes you feel?

08.01.2022 The lymphatic system is one of the vital systems of the body and plays a crucial role in our digestion, as well as the overall immune system as we know all systems in the . Within our bodies all systems work together. The lymphatic system works with the digestive system to absorb dietary fats. Lymph nodules line our entire gastrointestinal tract and dietary lipids enter these nodules to be transported through and out of the body. If lymphatic flow is impaired, lymph nodes ...become congested and this leads to bloating, constipation, weight gain and an inability to break down fats efficiently within the body. A recent 2019 study found a link between a congested Lymphatic System and Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Crohns Disease. Poor digestion reduces our immune system because: ‘Some 80% of the lymphatic system is associated with the intestines, making this area of the body the largest centre of immune activity. That’s no coincidence. The part of the body where most disease causing agents are combated, or generated, is the intestinal tract.’ - Andreas Moritz When working with clients who have gut disturbances I will also consider lymphatic health. If you are experiencing bloating, constipation, IBS or other digestive issues, call Marianne for a 15 minute free discovery to see how she can help: 0417875718. .

06.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW that our brains have their own detox system known as the Glymphatic System? During the day we can accumulate toxins (becoming an increasing problem these days) and metabolic waste in our brains and if this is not cleared daily we run the risk of inflaming the brain - symptoms include increased anxiety and depression, brain fog, poor concentration, headaches, poor sleep, sinus issues and recurrent tonsilitis. How we sleep, breathe, what we eat and digest, how o...ur liver & kidneys detox, how much we drink and move - all impact our Glymphatic health & its ability to remove rubbish from our brain. Recent evidence suggests that the Glymphatic System (GS) may be disrupted in, & contribute to, some diseases of the brain such as dementia, Parkinsons Disease & Alzheimers. It can be likened to a garbage clearance system for the brain. It that uses a system of channels formed by glial cells (brain cells). Our brain floats in Cerobrospinal fluid which moves into & around the brain collecting debris on the glial cells feet. This stream washes waste & toxins through the GS, which drains to lymph nodes outside of the brain. From there it can be detoxified in the liver or excreted through the kidneys. Besides waste elimination, the GS also seems to help distribute non-waste nutrients, such as glucose, lipids, amino acids, and neurotransmitters, in the brain. If you have poor sleep or any of the other symptoms noted above and you want to improve your Glymphatic System function & overall health, call or message Marianne on 0417875718. .

06.01.2022 ANXIOUS? STRESSED? Breathing that focuses on lengthening the exhale helps us switch out of Fight or Flight Mode. By breathing slowly with an emphasis on breathing out very deeply, we switch from the Sympathetic Nervous System to the Parasympathetic Nervous System and in just a few minutes we feel the difference. Other little hacks that help are:... Use a few drops of lavender oil on your skin - studies have shown lavender reduces anxiety. Get outside without sunglasses and get sunlight into your eyes. And exercise- do whatever you enjoy. Movement is one of the best anti-anxiety remedies (after breathing) there is and you wont regret getting going. It can vigorous or gentle depending on how you feel. Remember that movement is medicine See more

06.01.2022 AVOCADO - whats not to love? Eat it in so many ways: straight out of the skin sprinkled with sea salt, on toast with your other favourites,... blended into sauces and dips, made into desserts and added to smoothies. AND it is wonderful for your skin: loaded with Vitamin E & carotenoids to prevent oxidation which leads to ageing. its essential fatty acids keep the skin hydrated. Avocadoes are rich in mono-unsaturated fats that protect against inflammation & chronic disease. Their high levels of antioxidants (vitamins A&E, lutein, beta carotene) promote blood sugar reduction & support, cardiovascular, digestive & eye health. Use avocado oil for drizzling on salads & veg and for medium heat cooking..... AND did you know? their seeds contain 70% of the antioxidants in the avocado itself?!! They are a great source of fibre so grind them into your salads

05.01.2022 JOIN ME FOR A REVITALISING SPRING VINYASA PRACTICE when we will focus on renewing & revitalising our energy after the stagnation of winter. Our practice will include twists to help detoxify our organs and support lymphatic drainage especially in the legs & pelvic area. This will stimulate our metabolic fire. Hip opening there are 17 muscles that cross the hip joint. Increased mobility does come from moving the ball and socket joint through its full range of motion bu...t those muscles will have a big effect on movement. Synovial fluid that is released in the joint helps for sliding within the socket and it depends on movement to create supple hips. This makes it so important for us to move. Quadratus Lumborum these muscles are situated in the lower back and work with the obliques to rotate our spine and move it from side to side. They become tight from sitting which we do a lot these days in the car, in front of the computer, tv etc. There can be a tremendous amount of tension held in the muscles and tissues surrounding the pelvis. A hip opening & lower back practice is a great way to release this tension and open up the torso and assist in alignment of the whole body. Contact Marianne for more details or see website.

05.01.2022 LINE OF SIGHT The practice of Drishti in yoga is a gazing technique that develops concentration & relaxation but allows an inner focus which helps quieten the mind. It is a practice of mindfulness. I liken these moments of focus to mini meditations. Humans are visual creatures & even when practising yoga, or in everyday life, it is easy to be distracted where are eyes are directed our attention will follow. Todays world can be visually addictive & overstimulating and i...t is on 24 hours a day. No wonder so many experience high levels of stress. As our awareness flows out of us distracted by external influences, so does our prana (vitality). When we control and direct the focus of our eyes this is then followed by our attention. This is the yogic technique called Drishti. In Hatha Yoga on a simple level, each asana or posture has a drishti point. They assist concentration, aid movement and bring awareness to how we are resting in the posture as well as allowing orientation of the energetic body. In total there are 9 and each different point can be a useful anatomical tool. For instance when we gaze at: Finger tips (warrior poses) or a far point (twists) - it keeps our line of concentration strong and connected to the outside world, The navel (Downward Dog) - we turn our focus inwards finding a strong and still centre, Big toes (Seated Forward Bend) helps focus on the alignment of the spine & neck, The hand (Triangle Pose) draws our energy upwards & opens the heart (Hastagrai Drishti), and The third eye with closed eyes (Meditation) soothes the mind and strengthens our spiritual self (Antara Drishti). However if we find that closing our eyes during practice brings up dramas or concerns we are better finding an external vision and vice versa. The practice of Drishti is not limited to its value in asana. In Sanskrit, drishti can also mean a vision, point of view or wisdom. Our eyes focus on what they can see when the eyes are open. However when we close our eyes, the practice of Drishti can help us practice detachment as our attention is drawn inwardly away from external perplexities of life. It allows our mind & thoughts to soften, reduces mind chatter, anxiety, it allows our breath to deepen and helps us create a deeper sense of peace. What we gaze at during yoga and outside of yoga can have an affect on the how the body feels. If you feel stressed and gaze at trees or flowers, there is a softening in the body. On the other hand the body becomes tense when looking at something hard or cold. The practice of drishti gives us a tool to remove distractions and therefore notice the wanderings of our attention. It helps us balance the mind and the body. Value your time in yoga to find these mini breaks and, next time you find yourself in a day dream in everyday life understand its value to your mental and emotional health.

05.01.2022 VITAMIN D SUPPORTS OUR PROTECTIVE IMMUNITY Vitamin D is produced by the body in response to sunlight and reduces the risk of infectious disease by strengthening our innate (protective) immune system. Low vitamin D levels - especially from low sun exposure in the colder months - is a cause of low immune system function in winter, and a major cause of respiratory infections and outbreaks such as the virus we are now experiencing (Cannell et al., 2008). Vitamin D is the key...! Vitamin D is actually a hormone rather than a vitamin, is mostly produced in the skin in response to sunlight but is also absorbed from food eaten (about 10% of Vitamin D is absorbed this way) as part of a healthy balanced diet. For good absorption we need to take Vit D with fat containing food and ensure we have sufficient levels of magnesium & Vit K2 How does it work? Vitamin D turns on key proteins (peptides) in the immune system that trigger a strong anti-microbial response, allowing us to quickly and effectively fight off invaders before they can develop into a full-blown infection. Research shows: Vitamin D has been shown to enhance immune responses while controlling a potential harmful inflammatory response. Evidence shows this vitamin is able to control immune function at several different levels: Most immune cells, including B cells, T cells, monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells have a Vitamin D receptor. Immune cells contain the enzymes necessary to convert Vitamin D into its active form and utilise Vitamin D to perform certain functions. Inflammation triggers the monocytes and macrophages (types of white blood cells) to increase production of Vitamin D activating enzymes. Vitamin D has direct antiviral effects, including against enveloped viruses (Coronavirus is an enveloped virus). Vitamin D is a great tool to assist in prevention and treatment during this pandemic and we should keep our levels optimal because its conversion and utilisation by local cells and tissues is essential to activating our immune cells response.

04.01.2022 Thank you to Susanna from Bee Chiropractic in Perth for these lovely words. Im grateful that teaching yoga online means I can connect with people in other parts of Australia, Social isolation negatively affects peoples health right down to a cellular level. This decreases our bodys ability to fight viruses and also increases inflammation. Our connections with other people, outside of those we live with, are essential to support our mental health and our immune system.... Make your connections with family, friends and others a priority - for the sake of your health.

04.01.2022 WISHING EVERYONE PEACE HEALTH AND JOY - for Christmas and the New Year. I hope that the stress many people are feeling at the moment can be balanced with gratitude for what we have - so we can turn our thoughts to those less fortunate. . However we chose to celebrate the Festive Season I believe it’s important to remind ourselves that the real message of the season is PEACE and the ultimate gift is time we spend with those we love

03.01.2022 Roasted Carrots with miso crumble is my winter vegetable recipe with a twist the carrots are served with a yummy crunchy, slightly sweet and salty topping. In our household roasted vegetables are a winter staple. In this case roasting brings out the delicious sweetness of carrots which is in contrast to the topping and is a great accompaniment to other vegetable or meat dishes. It is a dish high in fibre, antioxidants and contains high levels of zinc which is es...sential for strong immunity as well as miso a fermented paste which assists in gut health - the seat of 80% of our immune system. So much nutrition and immune support in a simple dish. See recipe here: http://www.naturopathbrisbanewest.com//roasted-carrots-mi/

01.01.2022 SUMMER MORNINGS. Summer brings us a wonderful variety of fruits. Today’s breakfast was fresh fruit mango, passionfruit, strawberries, figs with orange & watermelon - homemade buckwheat granola (see recipe below) & plain organic yoghurt (you could substitute coconut yoghurt). Perfect. Fun Fact: Did you know buckwheat is not related to wheat at all, but instead is the seed of a plant related to the strawberry? What’s good about it?... Improves heart health - lowers cholesterol & blood pressure levels. Provides highly digestible protein. High fibre content helps improve digestion. Can help prevent diabetes. Doesn't contain gluten & is non-allergenic. Supplies important vitamins & minerals. Buckwheat Granola: 1 cup buckinis cup sunflower seeds cup organic dessicated coconut cup organic sesame seeds 2 tablespoons of coconut flower nectar or rice malt syrup 2 tablespoons coconut oil 2 tablespoons of lucuma powder Preheat oven to 100-120deg C (depends on how hot your oven gets). Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Place unbleached baking paper on a large baking tray and spread mixture evenly onto paper. Bake slowly for 30-60 minutes until mixture is golden brown. Half way through the process it is a good idea to stir the mixture & spread evenly again so it browns evenly. Remove granola from oven & allow to cool thoroughly. Store in a glass airtight container.
