25.01.2022 Today, I picked up the first of many seasonal vege packs. This one was grown and harvested by Liam Hughes, a local urban farmer from Lot 81 Microfarm.

24.01.2022 Health Alert: Smoke Smoke from bushfires is impacting regions across Queensland, in particular Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ipswich. If you can see smoke or d...ust in the air, you should limit your time spent outdoors until conditions clear. Fine smoke particles can cause health problems including: itchy or burning eyes, throat irritation, a runny nose and illnesses like bronchitis. They can also aggravate existing lung conditions, like chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. Symptoms can occur for several days after smoke is inhaled. Residents should: Move inside and stay inside as much as possible Close windows and doors Use fans or air conditioning on recirculating mode to keep cool Move outdoor events to an indoor venue or reschedule Keep medications close by if suffering a respiratory condition Be vigilant in taking prescribed medications for existing lung conditions Children, the elderly and anyone with a chronic illness or respiratory issue are at particular risk. Take care of these people by ensuring they stay inside and have any prescribed medications close by. Seek medical advice or call Triple Zero (000) if you or someone in your care is experiencing adverse reactions to smoke such as shortness of breath, prolonged coughing or wheezing. For information on air quality in your area follow the link below.
23.01.2022 STATE OF FIRE EMERGENCY: The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES has declared a total fire ban for 42 Council areas including Moreton Bay Region. With... tinder box-like conditions across much of the state, Council has cancelled all fireworks at upcoming Christmas Carol events to comply with the State's fire emergency declaration. This is a step-up from our existing Local Fire Ban and means: All existing permits to light fire are revoked. Fireworks have been banned. The lighting of any outdoor cooking fires is prohibited. Welding, grinding and the use of oxy acetylene cutting or heating outdoors are all banned. QFES have the authority to draw on private resources such as plant and equipment to assist in firefighting or preparation. Penalties for contravening this declaration could be a fine of up to $3,336 or two years imprisonment. See more

17.01.2022 The invasion has started!!! These little fiend's have spawned in my nursery. They are cluster caterpillar s and have a voracious appetite. They are able to wipe out a tray of seedlings in a day or two. To keep these guys in check I first squash and remove all that I can see. Then, I am going to spray my seedlings with a bitter tasting brew of quassia tea. Keep you posted!!!
16.01.2022 Last week I started the process of digging out the space for my veggie garden. I cleared it, mowed it, and decided to try and dig out 3mx1m each day until it was done. Keep in mind, Im not a natural gardener - Im a burlesque dancer who spends about half an hour trying to orchestrate the perfect gardening outfit each day. So, imagine my disappointment when every morning I made my way out into the back yard to find, not a field of cleared space, but a veritable ocean of dog poo. My dogs were relishing their freshly cleared toilet! And they arent small dogs! This did not encourage me to head out into the yard at all, so today I bit the bullet, and decided that building a fence was more important than digging out the space. So, the front part has been completed - its not pretty, but it is functional!
16.01.2022 Time to build a new garden bed. Part#1 The edging from this is old floor planks from the demolition yard. The site gets plenty of morning sun and afternoon shade.
15.01.2022 Gardening is not Cancelled!!Gardening is not Cancelled!!
15.01.2022 Time for new garden bed. Part #2 I'm not going to dig up those weeds. The soul is solid. Next step: watered the bed and added a layer of in waxed cardboard. This is also getting a good water.
14.01.2022 Today's Harvest!!! Mixed Sweet potato and a dash of Tumeric. All from a rarely fed 1.5m X 1m plot.

11.01.2022 Welcome to The Flock Houdini & The Black. Thanks Lot81 MicroFarm They are checking out the quarantine coup that will be their home for the next 2 weeks. I quarantine all newcomers to the flock for two reasons: #1 to give the current flock time to get-to-know the new hens (reduces hen fights); #2 incase of illness #sustainableliving #urbanfarming #Lot81MicroFarm
11.01.2022 Soil has arrived! And garden bed filled. I would normally be using the no dig method of building a garden, but at the moment I am feeling impatient. Ordering soil can get quite expensive. The stuff I ordered already contains compost.
10.01.2022 If it were a long past century, and I lived near the tanners, these two would generate a fine income for me. As it is not and I do not, the two poop factories will just have to warn their keep with cuteness and love
09.01.2022 Time for a cuppa!!!!!
08.01.2022 Arrowroot lifted, thinned and replanted into a newly fed bed. Last year I started off with only 2 plants. Today I have 11 plants and 9 bulbs. Great tropical shade plant for shallow soil. Not highly nutritious for the dinner plate but.... Chickens love the leaves as fodder and mashed arrowroot makes a great plain food for upset tums.
07.01.2022 So, in the interest of fair play, I am going to balance out the very lovely Maria-Louise Jacksons amazing skills in the garden, by sharing my own adventure in attempting to create my Victory Garden from scratch. For those of you who dont know me, I am one of the admins of Marias Victory Gardens page here, and I am quite possibly the worst gardener in the world! For as wonderfully Green as Marias thumb is, mine is a dreadful dead grey colour So lets do this! If I can create a Victory Garden, it really will prove that anyone can!
07.01.2022 A day spent thinning and tip pruning Seedlings can mean only one thing..... Mixed Salad greens for dinner

06.01.2022 A timely reminder mid season Interesting read on Australian Snakes... DO NOT try to catch, kill or identify the snake!!! This is important.... In hospital we NO LONGER NEED to know the type of snake; it doesnt change treatment. 5 years ago we would do a test on the bite, blood or urine to identify the snake so the correct anti venom can be used. BUT NOW... we dont do this. Our new Antivenom neutralises the venoms of all the 5 listed snake genus, so it doesnt matter what snake bit the patient. Read that again- one injection for all snakes! Polyvalent is our one shot wonder, stocked in all hospitals, so most hospitals no longer stock specific Antivenins. 3000 bites are reported annually. 300-500 hospitalisations 2-3 deaths annually. Average time to death is 12 hours. The urban myth that you are bitten in the yard and die before you can walk from your chook pen back to the house is a load of rubbish. While not new, the management of snake bite (like a flood/fire evacuation plan or CPR) should be refreshed each season. Lets start with a Basic overview. There are five genus of snakes that will harm us (seriously) Browns, Blacks, Adders, Tigers and Taipans. All snake venom is made up of huge proteins (like egg white). When bitten, a snake injects some venom into the meat of your limb (NOT into your blood). This venom can not be absorbed into the blood stream from the bite site. It travels in a fluid transport system in your body called the lymphatic system (not the blood stream). Now this fluid (lymph) is moved differently to blood. Your heart pumps blood around, so even when you are lying dead still, your blood still circulates around the body. Lymph fluid is different. It moves around with physical muscle movement like bending your arm, bending knees, wriggling fingers and toes, walking/exercise etc. Now here is the thing. Lymph fluid becomes blood after these lymph vessels converge to form one of two large vessels (lymphatic trunks)which are connected to veins at the base of the neck. Back to the snake bite site. When bitten, the venom has been injected into this lymph fluid (which makes up the bulk of the water in your tissues). The only way that the venom can get into your blood stream is to be moved from the bite site in the lymphatic vessels. The only way to do this is to physically move the limbs that were bitten. Stay still!!! Venom cant move if the victim doesnt move. Stay still!! Remember people are not bitten into their blood stream. In the 1980s a technique called Pressure immobilisation bandaging was developed to further retard venom movement. It completely stops venom /lymph transport toward the blood stream. A firm roll bandage is applied directly over the bite site (dont wash the area). Technique: Three steps: keep them still Step 1 Apply a bandage over the bite site, to an area about 10cm above and below the bite. Step 2: Then using another elastic roller bandage, apply a firm wrap from Fingers/toes all the way to the armpit/groin. The bandage needs to be firm, but not so tight that it causes fingers or toes to turn purple or white. About the tension of a sprain bandage. Step 3: Splint the limb so the patient cant walk or bend the limb. Do nots: Do not cut, incise or suck the venom. Do not EVER use a tourniquet Dont remove the shirt or pants - just bandage over the top of clothing. Remember movement (like wriggling out of a shirt or pants) causes venom movement. Australian snakes tend to have 3 main effects in differing degrees. Bleeding - internally and bruising. Muscles paralysed causing difficulty talking, moving & breathing. Pain In some snakes severe muscle pain in the limb, and days later the bite site can break down forming a nasty wound. Allergy to snakes is rarer than winning lotto twice. Final tips: not all bitten people are envenomated and only those starting to show symptoms above are given antivenom. Photograph by Angus Emmott
