23.01.2022 One thing that the Inner West Air Quality Report strongly highlights is the old age of Australia’s trucking fleet and how much this is contributing to the terrible air pollution in the inner west. Here are some stats to illustrate just how dire the situation is: Currently 26% of truck were registered in 1996 or earlier, meaning they have very little or no engine emission standards.... 16% of trucks meet only the basic engine emission standards, ie Euro 1 or equivalent. Almost 75% of Victoria’s fleet only meets Euro 3. Euro 6 was introduced in 2012. While most of the world has been at Euro 6 for many years, Australia won’t get there until 2027!! Trucks built before 1996 emit a staggering 60 times the particulate matter of a comparably powered and sized new truck. As you can see in the graph, Euro 5 and 6 are vastly superior when it comes to the amount of pollution they are emitting. Australia’s average truck age is 14.8 years which is one of the oldest in the developed world. At our current rate of fleet renewal, it will take 10 years to reduce Australia’s average truck age by a mere four months, from 14.8 to 14.4 years. Heavy vehicles travelling through the inner west are generally much more polluting that the current Australian standard of Euro 5. The vehicles doing the short-hall freight trips between the Port of Melbourne and nearby distribution centres and container yards are some of the oldest and most polluting trucks on the road. Not only that, travelling through residential areas means they are operating very inefficiently in stop start traffic, creating even more pollution. Truck movements to the Port of Melbourne are projected to triple by 2050. Modernising our trucking fleet would make a huge difference to air pollution in the inner west and the health benefits to the community would be massive. While engine emission standards are dictated by Federal Government, this cannot be used as an excuse by State Government for not being able to address the problem. There is so much that can be done to clean up truck emissions at a very local level. The air quality report contains recommendations on how to do this in the inner west, as well as examples of how this has been successfully achieved in other parts of the world. We’ll give more detail on that soon, but in the meantime feel free to read the report yourself here https://www.environment.vic.gov.au//inner-west-air-quality Ben Carroll MP Melissa Horne MP Lily D'Ambrosio MP Tim Watts MP

17.01.2022 A heavy vehicle scrappage scheme implemented in London in the lead up to a stricter Low Emission Zone. This is exactly the kind of carrot/stick approach that's needed to achieve real change. 14.01.2022 MTAG is preparing a guide for the upcoming 2020 Maribyrnong City Council elections to assist our supporters in identifying which candidates are more likely to help address the truck and air pollution issues in the City of Maribyrnong. We have asked all candidates who have provided email addresses to respond to the list of questions you can find on our website. This will enable our supporters to consider candidates’ position on trucks and air pollution before they vote.... We have asked them to respond by midnight Sunday 4 October 2020, and have said that their response will be posted, IN FULL, on the MTAG website. Keep your eyes out for their responses, which we will post, hopefully early next week. https://mtag.org.au//mtag-questions-for-2020-maribyrnong-/

13.01.2022 MTAG have prepared a guide for the upcoming 2020 Maribyrnong City Council elections to assist our supporters in identifying which candidates are more likely to help address the truck and air pollution issues in the City of Maribyrnong. We asked all candidates who have provided email addresses to respond to a list of questions. Their responses are published here in full - https://mtag.org.au//2020-maribyrnong-city-council-candid/ We have only looked at these candidates from... a single issue perspective, the one of trucks. The more than 8 million truck movements per year in the City of Maribyrnong is environmental injustice at its worst. The pollution these trucks create give our kids asthma and respiratory disease at rates amongst the highest in Australia. We also experience hospital admissions for stroke, heart disease and asthma way above the Australian average, all diseases associated with air pollution. Lung cancer rates are also abnormally high. We have a right to cleaner air and safer streets. Make your vote count! AUTHORISED BY MARTIN WURT, MARIBYRNONG TRUCK ACTION GROUP, PO BOX 215 YARRAVILLE 3013
