25.01.2022 Over the past several decades, the prevalence of food allergy has continued to increase, affecting nowadays 6%13% of the global population. Avoidance of allerg...enic foods and management of acute allergic reactions with antihistamines and epinephrine autoinjectors are the current standard of care. Allergen immunotherapy has been shown to increase the threshold of reactivity in the majority of foodallergic individuals. In this issue, Nadeau et al., in their comprehensive review, discuss the future prospects of food allergy. Kim and Burks describe food allergy treatment approaches, focusing on oral and epicutaneous immunotherapy. Gray et al. investigate the immune profiles of food-sensitized-tolerant infants. Furuta et al. analyze exerciseinduced allergic reactions on desensitization to wheat after rush oral immunotherapy. Nutten et al. characterize the physicochemical profiles of commercially available whey and caseinbased extensively hydrolyzed formula products. Hiscock et al. compare communitybased model of care for simple childhood food allergy with hospitalbased allergy care. Verhasselt et al. evaluate the effects of breastfeeding on food allergy risk. Luce et al. report multifood oral immunotherapy-induced decrease of Th2/Th17 cell frequencies. Asero et al. present several cases of severe systemic reactions following the ingestion of fruits and/or vegetables occurring in pathogenesisrelated proteins group 10- and profilinhypersensitive patients. 24.01.2022 Free Access: The role of peripheral blood eosinophil counts in COVID19 patients. Corresponding Authors: Hongzhou Lu & Min Zhang; Download Article Here: https:/.../bit.ly/38Y2k3T The radiological findings of pneumonia patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 are difficult to distinguish from other respiratory pathogens. In a retrospective study of 227 pneumonia and 97 COVID-19 patients, circulating eosinophil counts significantly decreased in most COVID-19 patients (71%), compared with other types of pneumonia patients. Low eosinophil counts and slow recovery may be associated with a severe condition. Increasing eosinophil counts is positively correlated with improved chest computed tomography images and patient recovery, earlier than a negative nucleic acid-based test. Eosinophil counts may be a useful early marker for the differential diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19. #COVID, #eosinophils

23.01.2022 Evidence has demonstrated the presence of undigested dietary proteins in the blood of healthy individuals and those with food allergy. This indicates the abilit...y of immunogenic dietary proteins to pass from the gastrointestinal tract into circulation through the body, following degradation into products that are absorbed by intestinal epithelial cells. In a Paradigms and Perspectives piece, Newberry and Hogan discuss the role of intestinal epithelial cells in food sensitization and allergic reactions (J Allergy Clin Immunol 2021; 147(1): P45-48). https://bit.ly/3ieFfOY See more

20.01.2022 Association of rhinovirus species with nasopharyngeal metabolome in bronchiolitis infants: A multicentre study. Corresponding Author: Michimasa Fujiogi; Downloa...d Article Here: https://bit.ly/3cGyot3 Based on the multicenter data of 768 infants with #bronchiolitis, Fujiogi et al. found that compard to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-only infection, infants with #rhinovirus (RV)-A or RV-C infection had distinct nasopharyngeal metabolome signatures. While causal interference remains premature along with prior studies, these observations lend additional support to the emerging concept that bronchiolitis pathobiology is heterogeneous by respiratory virus (and its species in RV), which has implication on the development of targeted therapies. 16.01.2022 A Murdoch Children's Research Institute trial is seeking more than 1700 babies in Melbourne to test whether taking a vitamin D supplement over the first year of... life can help prevent food allergies. Research shows that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in an increased risk of food allergy, likely due to its role in shaping the developing immune system. All children enrolled in the study receive a free and comprehensive allergy check when they turn one, to test for the 12 most common childhood allergens, including nuts, eggs and cows milk. Australia has the highest rates of childhood allergies in the world, with about one in 10 infants and one in 20 children up to five years of age being allergic. 14.01.2022 Recent changes in lifestyles, social interactions and diet in industrialized countries affect human microbiome and, as a consequence, increase the prevalence of... allergies and asthma. Nutritional factors and their interaction with the gut microbiota influence immunological processes since an early age. The fermentation of fiber by commensal gut microbiota result in generation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, propionate and butyrate. In this issue, Folkerts et al., using functional assays as well as transcriptome and epigenome profiling, uncover the critical mechanisms of action by which butyrate suppresses mast cell activation. In the linked editorial, OMahony provides an expert commentary on the data by Folkerts et al. In a mouse model, Hirata et al. investigate how the maternal intake of dietary 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids affects fatty acid profiles in breast milk and analyze the incidence of allergic diseases in the pups. Kim et al. demonstrate ceramide/sphingosine-1-phosphate imbalance and its association with distinct inflammatory phenotypes of uncontrolled asthma. Rossberg et al. analyze the development of allergic diseases in school age children receiving an oral bacterial lysate during the first months of life. See more

11.01.2022 New research led by Murdoch Children's Research Institute has established practical advice for GP's for the treatment of infant #colic. Excessive #crying in inf...ants is one the most common presentations to health services and is a challenging presentation for clinicians who are busy and time constrained. Although only about five per cent of infants with excessive or inconsolable crying have an underlying organic cause such as cow/soy milk protein allergy, it is essential to correctly identify those who require investigation and/or targeted treatment. The article gives guidance on how GP's should approach caregivers about excessive or inconsolable infant crying, sets clinical and referral pathways and provides suggestions for ongoing support. https://medicinetoday.com.au//crying-baby-excessive-or-inc

01.01.2022 Histamine downregulates the FCERI chain expression in human IL4activated M2 macrophages. Corresponding Author: Susanne Mommert; Download Article Here: http...s://bit.ly/34xvo06 In this study, Mommert et al. demonstrate that IL-4 and IL-13 up-regulate FCRI -chain mRNA expression in human M2 macrophages, which is in turn downregulated by #histamine. The histamine-mediated down-regulation of the FCERI -chain expression in IL-4-activated M2 macrophages may reduce IgE/FCERI antigen sensing and signal transduction thereby balancing the inflammatory conditions in allergic reactions. These observations may have an impact on the treatment of allergic diseases. #allergy #allergicdisease #allergy_journal journalallergy.com
