20.01.2022 I am finally getting around updating my previous post about consulting during the COVID-19 period. Its been a busy last few weeks! I am please to say that I have started consulting face-to-face again. We have implemented strict hygiene procedures in the consultation room and I am asking all my patients to respect social distancing measures. Online and phone consultations are still available for those who are self-isolating or who are unwell. I hope everyone is safely enjoyin...g reconnecting with family and friends now that some of the restrictions have been lifted. Take care and stay safe

15.01.2022 There has never been a more important time to look after our mental health. Here are some wise words from Eckhart Tolle in these challenging times

14.01.2022 Did you know that, as opposed to popular belief, heartburn and reflux result predominantly from a lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach rather than an excess of it. Structural abnormalities such as a dysfunctional oesophageal sphincter are also a common part of the pathophysiological picture. Antacids such as proton pump inhibitors (Nexium) are meant to be taken for 6 weeks at the most. Unfortunately many doctors fail to mention this to their patients. Addressing the cause of the reflux, heartburn or ulcers should be the number one priority.

11.01.2022 Health is a journey and an ongoing learning experience, all that is required to achieve it is the willingness to make changes.

04.01.2022 Gut problems, who doesnt have one? Bloating, discomfort, cramping, food sensitivities, reflux, constipation, diarrhea. Very often we just get used to it, it becomes part of our lives and we may even think it is normal. These signs and symptoms are our body trying to tell us that something is not right and listening to them could be, in some cases, life changing. The role of our gut is far from being a mere digestive process where our food is broken down to supply our body wi...th all the essential nutrients for our survival, it also has other very important functions: -There is increasing evidence about the gut-brain axis where an imbalance in our friendly gut bacteria can affect the way we feel (happy, anxious, depressed, insomnia, etc.) as the production and balance of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) rely on a healthy gut flora as many are produced right here. -The gut is also the power house of our immune system where 70%- 80% of our immune defence is generated so any gut bacteria imbalances leading to a damaged intestinal mucosa can result in allergies, food sensitivities, autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimotos and systemic inflammation often linked to chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. -The digestive system is very important in maintaining hormonal balance. Inefficient liver functions compromising hormones brake down and elimination may lead to painful and heavy period, premenstrual syndrome and fatigue; whereas an imbalance in gut bacteria may contribute to weight gain. -And the list goes on. Our modern lifestyle, especially stress, diet, medications and city living, affects not only the diversity of our gut microbiome, it also put our liver and pancreas under much pressure. Stress hormones, processed food, excess sugar and alcohol, abuse of antibiotics, spending too much time indoors and less time in nature are some of the factors causing gut bacteria imbalances (dysbiosis); eventually leading to inflammation, leaky gut and other health conditions. Dont be mistaken, the number of bacteria in our gut is far from negligible. They outnumber our cells 10:1 and constitute an average of 1% to 3% of a persons total body weight so anywhere between 0.7kg-2.1kg in a 70kg adult! So if you suffer from any digestive issues, it may be worth taking a closer look at what is going on as not only will your gut be thankful for being looked after, you may also find other health conditions that you thought unrelated improving too! If you feel the need to further investigate on any digestive issues or any other health complaints, please to not hesitate to contact me on 0449 595 649. Also I encourage you to listen to this very entertaining, educative and inspiring talk by the microbiologist Giulia Enders about the wonders of the gut! http://www.abc.net.au//conversations/conversations/8341554
