24.01.2022 Quite a new & revolutionary planting technique! Will be interesting to try this in future reveg projects.
22.01.2022 To my valued clients, friends and environmental networks, Corymbia Eco Solutions will continue to work through the COVID-19 crisis, albeit in a changed setting. And while I am currently self isolating for the foreseeable future and no longer engaging in face to face consultations, meetings, I will be using different media platforms such as Zoom, Loomio and teleconferencing to remain in contact and consult with both clients, stakeholders & committee members. All of my work...shops and planned Events are cancelled until this crisis is over, as well as bookings for the 'Gardens 4 Wildlife' program' and consultations with stakeholders. My fieldwork, monitoring & data collection inside Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve (YNCR) will continue as well as my committee obligations. I will be continuing to work on the protocols for the eDNA, environmental DNA testing, with BioQuisitive, and Science 4 All. And we hope to when given the all clear, be able to roll out this new environmental technology across our community groups. If you would like to learn more about this, or even just get updates, please don't hesitate to contact me. Likewise any future project, workshop, or biodiversity assessment etc, you would like to enquire or book, please feel free to email me at mariea.pacheco@scienceworld, or [email protected]. Alternatively you can text me on 0422114795 with a short message and I will get back to you promptly. Lastly, I hope everyone looks after each other & themselves, in this challenging time. And I so look forward to reconnecting with my groups, clients & enviro buddies asap! Stay home & stay well Best Wishes Mariea Corymbia Eco Solutions
21.01.2022 Out on the edges of the beautiful Woori & Cockatoo creek last weekend amongst stands of Manna gum, Mountain Tea Tree & Swamp Gum. We collected eDNA surveys & sampling using multi sampling methods including water, soil and mosquito pot collection. Looking for our 'critically endangered species namely, Leadbeater's Possum, Greater Glider, & Barred Galaxia. The aim is to refine these testing protocols, that can then be extended for further species. An exciting emerging environmental tech, that will soon play a major role in both the monitoring and protection of our precious native species! Want to know more? Contact us at 'Corymbia Eco Solutions' or 'Science For All' homepage.

10.01.2022 A busy day out in the Yellingbo NCR, carrying out surveys, feeding and tracking down some first time mama HeHo nests. Hid so well, but eventually located! Working with my colleague and friend, Snr Ornithologist Bruce is just a treat, and the opportunity to learn more about our wonderful native bird species is treasured! I discovered too some new native ground cover Swamp Mazus, Mazus pumilio and a new delicate but hardy and prolifically flowering Angled lobelia sps. Lobelia anceps, Scrambling Coral- Fern, Gleichenia microphylla Cut-leaf Daisy Brachyscome multifida just to name a few! Despite having to remove several leeches from my legs, almost inhaling mosquitoes, and then narrowly missing tripping into a wombats burrow, I would never trade my office!
10.01.2022 Battle of the Bunny! And we still haven't won, but only with continued pressure and a strategic, pest vertebrate management plan and utilising new methods in biocontrol tech, can we hope to minimise the ongoing environmental destruction by these introduced species. Working as Project Team Leader, for Department of Primary Industries, on the 2017 on the broad scale release of RHDV1a (K5) (Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus) was an exceptionally educational experience. Work...ing alongside some great, innovative landholders, keen to utilise the biocontrol methods in mitigating further threats to the unique biodiversity on their land was very rewarding indeed. While it did not have the success of the previous release, which had a knockdown rate of 90%, the results were heartening. Later in the lab, conducting post mortems on carcasses, it was discovered that there was in fact an overlap in pathogens present. The myxomatosis virus was present in both blood and organ samples, not unusual at that time of year, but presented an extra challenge in determining actual cause of morbidity. Critical to the ongoing success of the K5V release was an intensive, integrated pest vertebrate management plan. As foxes lost their favourite 'bunny bites' they would engage in a behaviour known as 'prey switching' and begin to target small, terrestrial, native species. This would involve fox trapping, ripping of warrens, fumigation and continued pressure on known predator populations. #DPI#Calicivirus#BattleoftheBunny#ProjectTeamLead#KV5Calici #Biocontrolmethods# See more

02.01.2022 Good things come in tiny packages! This seems so long ago, but this time last we where part of this exciting Helmeted Honeyeater 'Captive Release program through Zoo's Vic. Aimed at increasing both genetic diversity and populations this was wonderful to be a part of and document. The judicious crossing of approx three dozen Yellow - tufted Honeyeater with the Helmeted Honeyeater was done to ensure against the inbreeding depression likely to be caused by only a small population of Helmeted Honeyeaters left in the wild. These gorgeous and unique birds have all gone on too make their own little families, and my favourite memory of the day was tracking down & monitoring these tiny birds busy exploring their new home.
