24.01.2022 From our friends 1800 My Options #DropTheJargon

24.01.2022 Experiences of violence are not the same for every woman. Neither are experiences of seeking help. Entrenched gender roles, homo/and transphobia, racism and abl...eism impact what challenges might be faced accessing safety. That is why it is critical for services and the broader community to view sexual and gender-based violence through an intersectional lens. We know that in addition to coercion, control and gendered drivers, violence is further compounded by racism, heterosexism, transphobia, ableism, ageism, and the ongoing impact of colonisation among many. For all women to have safety, freedom and liberation, we must dismantle these intersecting systems of power! So many communities around Australia are already doing this. Check out our posts during these #16Days to learn more. Share in the comments with us below, how do you understand intersectionality? #AllVoicesForSafety

20.01.2022 Have you been waiting for the right time to book in a vasectomy? Why not recover while relaxing on the couch this summer? Although the thought of the snip may cause you (and your bits) to shrink in fear, the thought of recovery is often worse than the recovery itself! Any pain or discomfort felt through your recovery should be able to be treated with over the counter pain relief medication like paracetamol. Many people return to office work (or relax on the couch) the next da...y. So grab the esky, flick the cricket on and enjoy your well-timed recovery this summer. Want more information? Visit vasectomy.org.au [Image description: Illustration. A man is laying on a purple couch and watching the cricket on TV, holding the TV remote. Next to the couch there is a cricket bat and ball. He’s relaxed and smiling, recovering from his vasectomy. Text reads This summer, keep an eye on your balls.]

19.01.2022 Today marks the commencement of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign that calls for global action to increase awareness, galvanise advocacy efforts and share knowledge and innovations. In acknowledgement of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which is today, we’ve released the second edition of Hidden Forces: a white paper on reproductive coercion in Australia. Originally published in 2018, Hidden Forces brought reprod...uctive coercion as a form of abuse and violence to light. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are coming to our clinics and have a medical con...dition or another lawful reason for not wearing a fitted mask, this is ok and we understand. 06.01.2022 Safe access zones allow people the dignity and privacy that is offered to everyone else accessing healthcare. South Australia and Western Australia are yet to enact safe access zones, which is why we have collaborated with Australian Women Against Violence Alliance and The University of Queensland to publish this paper with our considerations for legislation. You can read it at www.mariestopes.org.au/advocacy-policy/safe-access-zones Anti-choice picketing of sexual and reprod...uctive health clinics is intimidation and harassment. If anyone has had challenging experiences with anti-choice picketers and needs to debrief or discuss their experience further, they can call 1800RESPECT on 1800737732 or visit their website to use their online chat function at www.1800respect.org.au [Image: 6 blue tiles with white text. Slides 2 to 6 are client quotes from written feedback. Slide 1: Read our Paper on safe access zones in Australia Slide 2: quite intimidating especially in the way they approached me. I am here as a support person for my sister I’m glad I was approached and not her Slide 3: "Protester paced onto the driveway, I had to brake and she waived her brochures at me while trying to tap on my window" Slide 4: "Absolutely unacceptable and inappropriate" Slide 5: "Both myself and my partner were affected by this... totally unacceptable" Slide 6: "Disgusting the way they speak to people. As a patient was confronting and unnecessary. Should not be able to make females feel like that in a hard time"]

05.01.2022 ‘Reproductive coercion’ is fast becoming a buzzword, but it’s far more complex than what folks may think. 05.01.2022 We're calling on South Australia to amend its proposed bill to decriminalise abortion. Women and pregnant people accessing abortion should have the same rights and access to healthcare, no matter their geography. Read our full statement here: https://www.mariestopes.org.au/y/decriminalise-abortion-sa/... [ID: Navy blue tile with a quote in white from MSA Managing Director Jamal Hakim. Text reads: when medical abortion via telehealth is legal, safe and supported in every other state and territory, it becomes questionable as to why current legislation in South Australia discriminates against patient autonomy.] #AbortionIsHealthcare

03.01.2022 In just 7 words, Andi has essentially summed up how life changing safe access zones are. Thanks for supporting the campaign Andi! Western Australia is the last jurisdiction in Australia to legislate safe access zones. Safe access zone legislation recently passed the lower house in WA, but we need your support to get it passed in the upper house. Safe access zones would prevent picketing within 150 metres of abortion care clinics. They safeguard clients and healthcare workers... against harassment, intimidation and judgement. Follow Our Choice WA to keep up with the campaign and learn how you can help! You can also find this incredible group on Instagram and Twitter by searching @OurChoiceWA [Image description: a woman is smiling at the camera, wearing a black singlet and cream pants. She is holding a sign that says "I support safe access zones because I want to access healthcare without fear".] #WAPol #SafeAccessZones #AbortionIsHealthcare

02.01.2022 In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women continue to be subjected to multiple forms of gender-based violence. Systems of oppression and genocid...e born out of ongoing colonisation, including child removal, incarceration and experiences of racism, continue to compound this violence. Organisations like the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Women's Alliance and leaders like Kuku Yalanji woman Antoinette Braybrook, CEO of Djirra, continue to advocate for their community. At the heart of this issue, writes Antoinette lies a profound lack of culturally appropriate, safe and specialist system responses for our women. Australia must listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who are already on the frontline walking the talk, implementing evidence-based approaches in community controlled services.
