23.01.2022 This little fellow has made great improvement over 3 trims. Photos were taken before his first trim and after the third trim. He has an interesting story, a vet diagnosed bruised heels as a cause of lameness and chronic abscessing at the coronary band in the front right hoof. Pony was lame for long enough that the owner was considering if euthanasia was a more humane option. After assessing him he appears to have chronic laminitis (possibly Cushings Syndrome related due to o...ther physical symptoms). The vet had prescribed an antibiotic to clear up the abscess which worked well. I advised on diet adjustments including minerals, herbs, general feed requirements. Hoof boots are used when the pony is exercised outside of his paddock. The elongated hoof capsules were very overgrown, contributing to the stress on the already compromised laminar connection. Shortening toes and lowering heels has been done gradually to allow soft tissues to adjust due to the long term nature of the hoof distortion. Still a long way to go, but results are already visible. Hoof shape is changing, stance has improved greatly and the owner reports that the pony has been sound and moving better than he ever has. There is still the possibility that there is an underlying condition that needs treatment and the owner will address this in the future. Changes like this are exciting and this is what keeps a hoof trimmers heart happy Thanks to his owner for taking all advice and applying it exactly as advised. See more

14.01.2022 Here we are again, third trim for this mare. Front feet have improved heaps. I'd like to see a steeper angle on the hinds and for her to load straight down through the cannons. I suspect she is very sore in the hindquarters and would improve with some body work. She had her first trim on the 30th May. That's pretty impressive improvement in such a short time frame.

14.01.2022 Here is a lovely little set of foal hooves. This little gelding has been trimmed every three to four weeks and he is approximately 8 months old now. I can't emphasis enough the importance of monthly trimming with foals. It not only produces beautiful strong hooves but the regular handling makes everything easier as your foal grows. If this foal had not had regular trimming we would already see a distorted hoof capsule with a long toe and under run heels.

13.01.2022 This is an interesting new advancement in worm management.

02.01.2022 This is a great article discussing skeletal maturity in horses. Well worth a read.
