25.01.2022 COLD SNAP POSES ADDITIONAL RISK FOR BOATERS ACROSS NSW Boaters across NSW are advised to take extra care with gale force westerly winds and a severe drop in wat...er temperatures forecast from today until mid-next week. Centre for Maritime Safety Director Peter Harvey said very cold conditions were forecast across most NSW waterways, with extreme wind chill expected in exposed areas and conditions deteriorating further due to rain, sleet or wet snow. Water temperatures across inland waters, rivers and estuaries in NSW are likely this weekend to be the coldest this winter, Mr Harvey said. Across NSW most of the estuaries, rivers and inland waters will have water temperatures below 15 degrees and many inland waters will be down around 10 degrees. Ocean waters will be very cold as well with temperatures expected to range between 13 to 17 degrees along the coast. Mr Harvey said cold water was a lesser-known but significant factor in boating fatalities and serious injuries in NSW, with almost 30 per cent of fatalities in the last 10 years linked to cold water. Just yesterday we had a tragic boating incident on the Mid-North Coast where cold water and hypothermia appear to be contributing factors, Mr Harvey said. Water below 15 degrees is considered dangerous but temperatures at that level and below are commonplace across NSW waterways at this time of year, and in alpine areas all year round. If you fall into cold water, cold shock can set in very quickly and youre at serious risk of hypothermia, or dangerously low body temperature. Wearing a lifejacket at all times will help it can only save your life if you are wearing it. Mr Harvey said waterways across NSW would generally be affected by large wind chop in exposed areas and large powerful swells were likely to begin impacting coastal waters from late Sunday and continue well into next week. Southern coastal bars will be particularly affected by these conditions and the temperature in many alpine waterways is likely to be near-freezing with snow forecast, Mr Harvey said. Boaters are advised that due to the strong winds, exposed lakes and estuaries will be very choppy and likely dangerous for small craft. Boaters heading out on the water are encouraged to log on and off with Marine Rescue NSW via the MarineRescue app, marine radio or phone.

24.01.2022 With the warmest weather since May 8, there were lots of boaters on the water last weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, Marine Rescue NSW volunteers from 17 units l...aunched 52 rescue missions up and down the coast. Operations included a search for a missing fisherman on the Mid North Coast, a fire on a boat in Sydney and a number of reports of boats adrift with mechanical failures. Congratulations to all our volunteers on their skilled work over the weekend helping save lives on the water.

19.01.2022 The multi-agency search for a man swept out to sea while rock fishing on the Mid North Coast is continuing this morning. Emergency services were called to Littl...e Beach at Red Rock, about 45km north of Coffs Harbour, responding to reports a man had been washed into the ocean about 2.30pm yesterday (August 29). The search continued until about 8.30 last night with no sign of the man. Vessels from Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour and Marine Rescue Wooli have returned to the scene this morning, along with the Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force launch Fearless from Coffs Harbour and volunteers from the NSW SES, who are searching Corindi River estuary sandbars. 15.01.2022 Safe! A 40 foot cruiser taking on large amounts of water is now berthed at a public pontoon in Coffs Harbour after a challenging voyage in the dark. A crew from... Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour and Marine Rescue Woolgoolga shadowed the cruiser as it limped up the coastline, preparing to rescue the skipper and transfer him to rescue vessel Coffs 30 if conditions on board his boat - which was taking waves across the bow - deteriorated dangerously. Marine Rescue NSW Mid North Coast Regional Operations Manager Randall Gawne said the boat had only just made it into the harbour. "It was touch and go; they only just managed to get the distressed vessel in," he said. Mr Gawne congratulated the MR Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga members for their rapid response to assist a boater caught in a perilous situation offshore. "This incident could have had a very different outcome," he said. "Im sure this boater is very grateful to our professionally trained and equipped volunteers, both on board Coffs 30 and in the radio base, who made it their mission tonight to ensure he returned safely to shore." Marine Rescue NSW Operations Manager Andrew Cribb said that last weekend Marine Rescue NSW undertook 52 rescue operations across the state, many of which could have been avoided. Having you and your boat well prepared can make all the difference if theres an emergency out on the water, Mr Cribb said. Before heading out, make sure your boats in good repair, your engines been recently serviced and your batterys in good condition. Have a full tank of fuel and carry some extra fuel on-board, he added. Most importantly of all, make sure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket and Log On with Marine Rescue on VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue app so our volunteers can be quickly on the scene to rescue you if you find yourself in trouble on the water. The Marine Rescue vessels undertook the search alongside the Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force launch Fearless from Coffs Harbour and volunteers from the NSW SES, who are searching Corindi River estuary sandbars. The video shows volunteers Jayson Palczewski, Russell Shelton and Paul McLeod scouring the sea for signs of the missing rock fisherman.

13.01.2022 Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS For people in Hunter, Illawarra and parts of Mid North Coast, South Coast, Central Tablelands and Southern Tablelands ...Forecast Districts. WINDY CONDITIONS FOR EASTERN NSW A vigorous cold front that swept across the eastern districts during Wednesday has now moved into the Tasman Sea. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible this morning (Thursday). The threat of severe winds is expected to ease Thursday afternoon, although conditions will still remain windy about eastern parts of the state. Locations which may be affected include Maitland, Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Katoomba and Goulburn. Wind gusts overnight: Mt Boyce 91 km/h, High Range (Wanganderry) 89 km/h, Bellambi 85 km/h. The NSW SES advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. 12.01.2022 Two Marine Rescue NSW crews are joining a major coordinated search for a man who was swept out to sea from Little Beach at Red Rock on the NSW Mid North Coast e...arlier this afternoon. The man, who was swimming alone, disappeared about 2.30-3pm. A crew from Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour and Marine Rescue Wooli are both en route to the scene in fading daylight. Personnel from Red Rock Surf Life Saving NSW and the NSW Police Force Local Area Command also are on scene and a Royal Australian Air Force helicopter is on the way. The crew of MRNSW rescue vessel Coffs 30, skippered by Deputy Unit Commander Bernie Tight, will be the On Scene Coodination vessel, working in tandem with rescue vessel Wooli 30, skippered by Unit Commander Richard Taffs. Coffs 30 will establish communications with the RAAF helicopter once both are on scene and provide the on-water platform for the helicopter search.

12.01.2022 Representatives of the The Whiskey Project Group one of Marine Rescues key boat building companies, arrived unconventionally but entirely appropriately at Mari...ne Rescue State Headquarters on Thursday, aboard their new tactical watercraft, Whiskey Alpha 85. The Whiskey Project, who recently acquired Yamba Welding and Engineering, supply a range of vessels to Marine Rescue NSW. During the visit, Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos, Fleet Manager Kelvin Parkin and Fleet Officer Sean Jewiss inspected the vessel and chatted to The Whiskey Project crew of Ollie Satin, Ryan Carmichael and Michelle Mrdjen. The crew then demonstrated the capabilities and features of the 8.5 metre carbon fibre craft in a short sea trial off Port Hacking. Assessing available boat technology is an important task by Marine Rescue NSW staff to ensure our volunteers have the boats and equipment they need to achieve our mission of saving lives on the water. Our thanks to The Whiskey Project Group for allowing us to inspect their vessel.

12.01.2022 EXTRA $4 MILLION FOR COFFS HARBOUR BOAT RAMP The Coffs Harbour boat ramp will be a key beneficiary of the NSW Government’s $205 million maritime stimulus to... kick-start the economy and create local jobs. Today, I was joined by Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance to announce $4 million will go to upgrading our boat ramp, dredging the boat ramp basin, extending the breakwater to improve access to the ramp, and installing new pontoons and parking. This fast-tracked upgrade of the boat ramp ties in with the broader foreshore master plan carried out by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. Not only are we supporting NSW tourism by making these important maritime upgrades, but we are also creating 425 jobs across our regional and rural communities, to help recover from the COVID-19 crisis. Detailed planning work is well underway with concept designs developed in consultation with Coffs Harbour City Council and the local community who have championed the need to upgrade the facility. The stimulus funding will see a further $4 million added to the existing $10 million commitment by the NSW Government and will allow the boat ramp project to better align with the overall Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore Precinct plan. The first stage of work will involve extending the break wall by 75 metres, widening the ramp to six lanes and carrying out dredging to the basin. This additional funding will allow for the second stage of the project to be brought forward, including upgrading the car and trailer parking, realignment of the access road and entrance, and upgrading features such as fish cleaning tables. The Coffs Harbour boat ramp upgrade ties in with the broader foreshore master plan carried out by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. 04.01.2022 A 40 foot cruiser taking on large amounts of water as it made its way north along the NSW Mid North Coast has made it to safety at Coffs Harbour. A crew from Ma...rine Rescue Coffs Harbour was quickly deployed when the cruisers skipper called for help this afternoon, reporting he was taking on water off Nambucca. He was holding the water ingress with a shower pump and managing to make slow progress north at 6 knots. The crew of rescue vessel Coffs 30 rendezvoused with the boat offshore, shadowing the cruiser in the darkness as it limped towards Coffs. The boat was sitting heavily in the water and taking waves over the bow. Despite reporting knee-deep water in the bow, the skipper has managed to steer his way into safe harbour. The crew of Coffs 30 was skipper Mitch Harvey - the Unit Commander of Marine Rescue Woolgoolga - along with Paul McLeod, David Oliver and Ken McNeil, with communications support from Jan Steel, Brian Holmes and Graeme King.
