20.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW volunteers remain on duty, ready to respond to emergencies and help boaters stay safe on the water over the festive season. COVID-19 operating conditions have again been introduced to protect volunteers and boaters in the Greater Sydney, Hunter/Central Coast and Illawarra regions. Rescue crews in these areas are again operating on an on-call basis, rather than on duty at their bases, meaning volunteers will be responding directly from their home or workplace.... Radio bases are operating with core numbers of volunteers. Units in the Monaro, Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers regions are operating as normal. Commissioner Stacey Tannos assured the boating community that our volunteers were selflessly putting the safety of the boating community first. We have introduced these precautions in response to the State Government’s health advice including today’s announcement from the Premier and Chief Medical Officer to protect our personnel and the boating community, he said. Boaters should continue to Log On and Log Off with Marine Rescue NSW via VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue App. Boaters in trouble on the water can continue to call for help on VHF Channel 16 or on Triple Zero (000). So stay safe, wear a life jacket & have a great day everyone.

19.01.2022 We hope everyone has had a great and safe Easter Marine Rescue Middle Harbour has had a busy weekend on Sydney Harbour, we recieved a Bunny Bunny call on Sunday to assist the Easter Bunny make a safe transit across the Harbour, the Easter Bunny was able to continue the egg deliveries safely. On Friday Middle Harbour got to meet the new kid on the block, Port Jackson PJ31 - the newest member of the Port Jackson fleet. MH30 assisted a vessel experiencing mechanical difficulti...es off Bondi, the vessel was safely towed back to Rozelle. On Sunday we assisted a large motor vessel that had run into difficulties near Dobroyd Head, our vessel MH30 was able to make it to the distressed vessel within 15 mins of receiving the urgent call for help. MH20 assisted a RIB tender that was low on fuel from the nearby Reef Beach - it had 4 x 12 year old girls (including the birthday girl) celebrating on the harbour with her friends, a mum and 18 month old toddler. MH20 transferred the kids, mum and toddler on board and towed the tender back to The Spit. Today MH20 assisted a runabout that was experiencing engine trouble at Balmoral and towed the vessel back to the Roseville boat ramp. Also a reminder if you are in trouble try to drop your anchor as soon as possible, it can give you valuable time to call for assistance and help reduce a potentially more severe situation. Our thoughts are with the people who were injured in the boat explosion on the Hawksbury yesterday. Have a safe and happy end to the long weekend. Happy Easter

19.01.2022 60 people fined during Operation Armada Marine Area Command Sunday, 06 December 2020 The NSW Police Marine Area Command has issued 60 infringements and 24 warnings so far during a proactive police operation on the state’s waterways this weekend.... Operation Armada, a high-visibility and mobile policing strategy targeting vessels and personal watercraft compliance, commenced 7am yesterday (Saturday 5 December 2020) and runs until 7pm today (Sunday 6 December 2020), across waterways throughout the state. The operation involves officers from the Marine Area Command, local officers from Police Area Commands and Police Districts across the state. During the two-day operation, more than 100 officers and 54 police boats were deployed, carrying out 120 drug tests and random breath tests on 733 boats and 175 jet skis, and patrolling 210 boat ramps and marinas. About 60 infringement notices were issued for speeding, not having correct safety equipment, and not wearing life jackets. However, there were no positive drug or alcohol tests. Superintendent Joseph McNulty, Marine Area Commander, said he was pleased with the result. It’s good to see that people are taking safety seriously when it comes to drug and drink driving, that’s a really positive result. But I also want to remind the boat users who were fined about the importance of wearing lifejackets, having correct safety equipment and not speeding. If you are a skipper, remember you are responsible for the safety of everyone on your boat. If you are operation a passenger , wear a life jacket; it will save your life. Major waterways throughout the state were targeted including Yamba, Bellingen, Kalang River, Port Stephens, Newcastle Harbour, Pittwater, Ettalong, Botany Bay, Georges River, Port Hacking, Audley, Shoalhaven, Wollongong Harbour, Crookhave River, Kiama, Eden, Wallaga Lake, Bermagui and Merimbula. Superintendent Mcnulty said police will continue to be out in force over the summer period, with operations targeting rule breaking. We have some of the most picturesque waterways in the country, which also means they see a significant increase in recreational activity during warmer months, meaning more boating incidents and water related injuries and fatalities. Large-scale operations like this are necessary during the warmer months to ensure the communities safety on our waterways by targeting dangerous and anti-social behaviour. Those with personal watercrafts take this as your warning we won’t tolerate unsafe and dangerous behaviour, we will have our sights set on you.

16.01.2022 Safety video launched to prevent international student drownings in NSW ahead of summer Monday, 07 December 2020 A water safety video is today being launched in a bid to protect international students from drowning in NSW this summer.... NSW Police Force in partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW, Royal Life Saving NSW and Northern Beaches Council are launching the video today (Monday 7 December 2020), which was funded by Study NSW. In the video, six students share their experience of the water to help raise awareness and save lives. Among them is Nepalese international student Manisha Gautam, whose boyfriend tragically drowned a year ago in Bents Basin in Sydney’s west. He was trying to save his friends. He didn’t have any idea about safety procedures and measures. With so many peoples’ help they couldn’t save him, said Manisha Gautam. It’s such a loss for the whole family and friends. It gives me a different idea about the importance of educating ourselves’ in water safety, she said. The video, which is subtitled in eight different languages, encourages international students to enrol in swimming lessons and familiarise themselves with water safety when swimming in the ocean, rock pools, rivers and pools or rock fishing. Some of the recommended safety tips include: Never swimming alone Wearing a life jacket when fishing and boating Avoiding alcohol around water and not drinking if you plan to swim Learning Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) International students who come from landlocked countries and have limited experience with Australian water conditions are at the greatest risk of drowning. I think it is important for international students to adapt to the water culture in Australia because it is very different from where we are from. And this means there are also different dangers and types of risks, said international student Manuella Sella, from Brazil. People are not expecting the currents to be so strong but it is really dangerous, she said. Superintendent Rohan Cramsie who is the said he wanted international students to enjoy the wonderful waterways NSW had to offer. We want international students to safely enjoy the water in NSW. Drownings are extremely tragic due to their preventable nature. Understanding water safety and learning to swim can be the difference between life and death, said Mr Cramsie. Surf Life Saving NSW, Royal Life Saving NSW and Northern Beaches Council have been working incredibly hard to make sure everyone is safe in the water. And they’ve done a fantastic job at getting international students involved in this campaign, said Mr Cramsie.

13.01.2022 NEW CHAPTER FOR MARINE RESCUE NSW VESSEL The largest rescue vessel in the Marine Rescue NSW fleet Lord Howe 40 was farewelled from Port Macquarie today, headed ...for its new home base on Lord Howe Island. The boat will be the island community’s first dedicated rescue vessel, with local volunteers to start training on board in coming weeks, ready for the start of operations early in the new year. The former NSW Police 16m patrol vessel Fearless, LH 40 has undergone a $700,000 refurbishment in readiness for its new career under the MRNSW banner. Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams today farewelled the newly-refurbished vessel and wished it well for its 320 nautical mile journey. Having undergone extensive sea trials here in Port Macquarie, Lord Howe 40 is now ready to begin the next chapter in its life, helping keep watch over Lord Howe Island’s many local and visiting sailors and boaters, Mrs Williams said. Lord Howe 40 recently underwent a complete refit and facelift at Birdon Marine right here in Port Macquarie, thanks to an investment of more than $700,000 by the NSW Government. This is part of the $37.6 million the Government has invested over four years to deliver MRNSW 38 new rescue vessels, improve volunteer facilities and continue upgrading the marine radio network. "This expenditure is aimed at ensuring our Marine Rescue volunteers have safe, reliable and modern vessels such as Lord Howe 40 to support the volunteers in their mission to save lives on the water. "I’m delighted in the support of the NSW Government in enhancing the safety of the boating community and in supporting local jobs and industry here on the Mid North Coast. Marine Rescue NSW Fleet Manager Kelvin Parkin said comprehensive sea trials had readied the vessel for the 18 hour journey to its new home on Lord Howe Island. Today is an exciting day for everyone at Marine Rescue as our first offshore rescue vessel sets off on its maiden voyage in our own livery. Marine Rescue Lord Howe Island Unit Commander McFadyen, who spent five years operating on Fearless as a member of the NSW Police Force Marine Area Command, said the new unit’s 34 volunteers were eagerly anticipating starting training on board LH 40. I’m excited to be here today in Port Macquarie to help take Lord Howe 40 home to start the next chapter in its service life. Photos: Brad Whittaker Photos: 1. 06.01.2022 On Saturday 3 April afternoon, Sydney water police were conducting patrols in Middle Harbour off Clontarf Beach, when they observed a vessel about 80 metres awa...y travelling at low speed. This runabout vessel (hire boat) was approximately 5.5m with 6 adults and teenagers onboard. Water police saw the vessel take some large boat wash across the bow caused by multiple vessels in the area. A number of further waves followed over the bow, making the vessel tilt over to one side and then capsize very quickly, with all those onboard caught underneath. As police arrived and prepared to immediately enter the water, all persons surfaced safely from under the vessel and were helped onto the police vessel. Thankfully no one was seriously injured. The vessel, still upside down, was towed to nearby Clontarf Beach where a crowd had gathered and assisted pulling the boat into the shallows. Using a mask and snorkel, police retrieved personal belongings trapped under the vessel. Big shout out to the members of the public that assisted pulling the damaged vessel in so it could be turned over and pumped out. We are very grateful! Water police, with all 6 family members on board then safely towed the vessel to Rose Bay wharf.

05.01.2022 The Marine Area Command has safely returned three yachtsmen to land following a joint search and rescue (SAR) operation more than 220nm off the coast of NSW this week. Just after 10pm on Monday (9 November 2020), a ‘MayDay’ distress call was received from Solar Coaster, an 11.5m yacht, which had been de-masted about 100nm west of Lord Howe Island. Authorities were informed the mast had hit the hull of the vessel, but no damage had been sustained, nor were there any injuries t...o the three men aged 64, 63 and 61 who were on board. The NSW Police Force’s Marine Area Command and Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) subsequently launched a SAR operation to locate the yacht and bring the men back to shore. About 10.30am on Tuesday (10 November 2020), AMSA launched a Challenger jet and dropped fuel, supplies, and a satellite phone, which enabled contact between the SAR crews and the yachtsmen. The Marine Area Command subsequently launched a police vessel, which met up with the Solar Coaster on Thursday (12 November 2020). Following a safety assessment, the police vessel connected a towline to the yacht and commenced a 200nm journey back to the NSW coast. Despite facing some unfavourable weather and sea conditions which at times restricted their speed to just 4kn both vessels arrived safety at Nelson Bay just before 10.30am today (Saturday 14 November 2020). After 5 days at sea, the fatigued men were reunited with family members shortly after docking at Port Stephens Water Police.
