20.01.2022 Last night the skipper of this yacht attempted to cross the Clarence River bar at Yamba in the dark, missing it by about 100 metres. Having run aground on Turne...rs Beach just south of the break wall, the elderly skipper called for help with a mobile phone before deciding to spend an uncomfortable night on board the yacht as it was pummeled by waves before disembarking this morning, shaken but otherwise unharmed. The skipper did not have a VHF radio and had not Logged On with Marine Rescue NSW. A crew from Marine Rescue Iluka Yamba headed out to inspect the yacht but was unable to retrieve it from the beach, from where it will now be salvaged. This incident is a timely reminder of the importance of planning your journey, Logging On and Logging Off with Marine Rescue and having a VHF marine radio on board.

18.01.2022 Today we thanked the Marr family children for raiding their money boxes to help us out when the windscreen of TU20 was vandalised. The boys were thrilled with their ride on the Moruya river, and our volunteers were impressed with the boys’ confident calm around boats, and their familiarity with life jackets.

17.01.2022 Here’s the insider view of Coila Lake’s opening today. What a treat to be able to witness this phenomenon, and the diversity of changes that will occur in our waterways over the next weeks! But take care: with the lake sitting several meters higher than the ocean, masses of matter on the move is unpredictable, and may have safety implications.

17.01.2022 Congratulations to our Phillip Dowle for qualifying as a RWC operator during exercises off Narooma today. We were too busy to take pics, but instead here is Tuross River mouth at high tide today. RWCs are a key asset for the Tuross bar and river.

16.01.2022 Yay! New TU20 getting closer. We are constantly writing grants, and fundraising as much as we can, to be able to fund our unit’s part, and to get a petrol fuel trailer. Our current TU20 takes diesel, so old arrangements can’t be used.

16.01.2022 Today's weather forecast was spot on: a morning of perfect boating conditions, and at 2.15, sudden whipping winds caused a scurry to the boat ramp.

04.01.2022 Tuross Marine Rescue hosted a heart-warming medal ceremony today. The awards were given by Monaro Regional Operations Manager Glenn Sullivan, looking very dapper in full dress uniform. Glenn made an excellent speech highlighting Marine Rescue’s appreciation of Mike Byron’s decades of service to the Australian community both as an active member of the Rural Fire Service and of Marine Rescue, as he presented Mike with a 15 years’ service National Medal. Mike said he really appr...eciated receiving the recognition, particularly as sometimes the outcomes of the emergencies he attended weighed heavily. Glenn also highlighted MR Tuross’ positive contribution, and made all unit members feel appreciated. Five of our members, UC Alan Blessington, DUC Paul Carter, Wayne Ellison, Greg Krywiel and Blaise Madden, received a NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation, as well as a peaked cap featuring the state’s floral emblem, the Waratah. Not only did MR Tuross send in volunteers to help, it was interesting to learn that it was the MR Tuross generator that powered the Narooma Club which gave sanctuary to so many, making us reflect on the many small contributions, which together created the fabulous community response to the fire crisis.

03.01.2022 Isn’t our new vessel looking grand!!

03.01.2022 Yay! Can’t wait!

03.01.2022 In 24 hours a trickle is transformed to a raging river across Coila Bar Beach. In that time the level of the lake has receded from 2.099 to 1.017. The forces of nature and physics combine to make this a wonderful spectacle to behold.
