24.01.2022 In March this year, divers from the Maritime Archaeology Association Victoria discovered a lost shipwreck off the coast of Wilsons Promontory. In 1956 the SS V...icky, a 50-metre, 700-tonne coastal collier, was carrying a load of coal from Sydney to Melbourne when it developed engine trouble in heavy seas, capsized and sank. The Encyclopedia of Australian Shipwrecks records 14 survivors and eight seamen who lost their lives. The ships location will be protected by Heritage Victoria while its maritime importance is assessed. http://home.vicnet.net.au/~maav/ See more

10.01.2022 What is maritime archaeology? How do we find shipwrecks and record them? Why protect them? The maritime archaeology team at Heritage Victoria are running an AIMA/NAS Part 1 certificate in Maritime Archaeology on the 3/4 November 2018. The course is based in Melbourne CBD over a Saturday and Sunday. Saturday focuses on learning all about the history of Maritime Archaeology and how it operates in Australia, then on Sunday we head to Blunt's historic boatyard (Williamstown) to ...put our archaeological recording skills into practice. These courses are globally recognised and provide with basic skills for maritime archaeological recording! You do not have to be a diver for this course - practicals are non-diving. If you know anybody who is interested in shipwrecks, maritime heritage and archaeology please get them to RSVP to me by 26 OCTOBER 2018. [email protected]

09.01.2022 Todays 3D photogrammetry modelling workshop was a hit! Thanks to everyone for coming along - next stage is getting in the water and recording some shipwrecks

05.01.2022 In lieu of an April meeting, here's some highlights from our labour day dive trip! Two three-masted barques were inspected - the Lady Young (1865) and the Cheviot (1827). We indulged in maritime archaeology above water too! A visit to the Port Albert maritime museum let us rediscover the Clonmel, an English steamer facilitating trade between Melbourne, Launceston and Sydney which wrecked on her third voyage after a 63 hour struggle. ... Great to see work by Heritage Victoria and MAAV members in a former era working to identify, record and preserve wrecks across Victoria's coastline! #shipwreckcoast #localhistory #victoria #maritime #archaeology #portalbert #wilsonsprom
