25.01.2022 It’s been a busy day for our volunteers at our Swansea Radio Base as well as our volunteers at our Pelican Boat Base. Our teams responded to five calls for help from our community, the first one being at 6.30am. Our team is wrapping up another call just now at 5.30pm.

25.01.2022 Croc Country.. well worth having an EPIRB.

23.01.2022 197 Years... how long will it take before we all learn...

22.01.2022 Mayday - We're Sinking This was the first call picked up by our Radio Operators yesterday afternoon. On replying and asking for a position, all the vessel was ...able to say was 26 degrees 39 minutes, before the radio went dead. Our Blue Sunday Crew was at the Base and so were directed to get underway ASAP and head out on that Latitude to search for survivors. After heading out past Pt Cartwright the crew, with skippers Ray Rahn and Steve Doulgeris aboard, received a call from the Water Police that an EPIRB had been activated and so the full position was now known. We had a vessel on our Radio Log that had indicated they were going to approximately the EPIRB position to fish and so it was possible that this vessel was the one that had sunk. On arriving at the location, a search was commenced and the two men, wearing inflatable lifejackets and clinging to an esky, were spotted by the crew and retrieved from the water. They were given dry clothes and blankets and brought back to Mooloolaba and checked by the paramedics. As it turned out, this was the boat that we had on our Log and he had actually joined as a Marine Assist Supporter and logged on that morning, so now we knew there were only two people on board. As far as we know, both are feeling better today and appreciated our help so much that the skipper came in this afternoon and made a donation to QF6 and left some beer for the crew. It's great to be appreciated, so thanks a lot. A great result for everyone involved and a fantastic effort by our crew.

21.01.2022 Our volunteers were tasked by the water police at around 2030 last night to tow a 4.5m aluminium centre console from the pine river, under the M1 bridge. The... vessel had crashed into a pylon of the bridge. *It suspected that the steering failed*. One person was injured and hospitalized. They were very lucky to be alive. Crews took a water police officer with them when our rescue vessel was launched at Deep water bend. Once on scene, it was clear the boat was a mess and our crew knew towing it back would have it's challenges. One of our crew and the water police officer bailed the vessel in shifts, as the water was coming in from a large gaping hole in the bottom of the boat. The tow was slow and our crews had to hug the banks in case they lost the battle of bailing it out. They arrived back at deep water bend, where the police had one of their boat trailers ready and took the vessel back to their base. It was good to see a great team effort from Coast Guard Redcliffe and the QLD Water Police #volunteers #guardiansofthebay #workingtogether

21.01.2022 Have you checked your flares? and don't keep expired one onboard - it is illegal.

20.01.2022 Overnight we banned the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier TW Hamburg from Australian ports for 12 months for wage exploitation. We boarded the ship in Gladstone las...t Friday after receiving correspondence that seafarers onboard had expired employment agreements and requested repatriation. During the inspection, we were approached by seafarers who claimed they had been underpaid. The evidence we collected confirmed that crew were owed about $42,000. We also discovered that the quantity and quality of food provided was well below the standards required by the Maritime Labour Convention. The galley and fridges were filthy and the ship had very poor hygiene practices overall. The crew are now being repatriated after rightly refusing to continue working under such atrocious conditions. Since 2014 we've banned 16 ships from Australian ports, the majority for failing to pay seafarers their wages on time and in full. Earlier this week we banned Agia Sofia for this reason. Seafarers are making enormous sacrifices right now by being away for extended periods of time from their loved ones, just to keep critical global trade moving. We do not tolerate the exploitation of seafarers in our waters, and any ship that arrives in Australia under such conditions will be held accountable. Read more: http://ow.ly/kCqk50ALRa1

18.01.2022 Stay calm and Stay where you are. Apart from having an EPIRB, a marine radio is a secondary must have.

18.01.2022 A BUSY and REWARDING weekend for our volunteers Saturday, the first rescue job was for a yacht which had gear box trouble. The weather conditions were perfect... for anything but sailing (with no wind). The friendly couple were picked up just east of Redcliffe, and safely towed back to their berth at Scarborough. They have been loyal marine assist members for many years. Sunday’s weather proved to be very different to Saturdays. A strong westerly blew up and caused a few issues for some of our NEW marine assist members. The first call for the day came in from a boat with engine troubles near Tangalooma. ‘RSL Redcliffe’ was quickly dispatched with crew to retrieve the vessel, before it blew to close the beach. While this assist was happening, ANOTHER call for assistance came in from a vessel who had broken down off Scarborough. ‘Freightplus’ was dispatched to assist. Both owners were grateful for the assist and praised our volunteers on their professionalism. Sunday evening, just after our volunteers had knocked off, a call came in for a Medevac. Standby crew members were called back in to accompany 3 QAS paramedics to Tangalooma to complete the Medevac - in conditions which were not very pleasant . It is good to see more boaties are seeing the benefits of joining our marine assist program, with new signups each week Sign up today www.coastguard.com.au/marine-assist #qf3 #guardiansofthebay #volunteers #bteam

16.01.2022 A whole new approach towards Air Sea Rescue - No boat ramps, bar crossings or sand bars to worry about. Only the sudden stop on the water once released from the chopper...

15.01.2022 Detailed commentary by those who were there to tell the real story of the vessel on fire near Coast Guard Redcliffe today.

11.01.2022 It seems we have set a lockdown precedent for emergencies in Flinders. Just after 8PM this evening we were activated to a sinking yacht off Flinders, conditions... were not ideal but the crew were on scene in under 30 minutes along with crews from VMR Mornington & Hastings - Volunteer Marine Rescue inc and Police Airwing. The yacht is alongside Flinders Pier and currently getting pumped out by Flinders CFA.

11.01.2022 Just a matter of time before you need them if you're not prepared.

11.01.2022 Recently QF6 conducted life raft training at the Kawana Aquatic Centre for new volunteers from QF6, QF4 Caloundra and QF5 Noosa. We had two life rafts to use a...nd this video shows the donated life raft being deployed with the QF5 members using it for part of the training exercise. Hopefully, none ot them will see a life raft deployed in an emergency, but it's vital to know what happens and how to enter a life raft. Just imagine 3 metre seas and 30 knot winds and maybe darkness.

10.01.2022 On a rainy winters day who’d of thought we could be so busy? Today we attended to 5 rescues. One of which was a 36ft cruiser taking on water at Rottnest. Thankfully Resolute was able to get the vessel in tow and take it back to Blue HQ Marinas where an emergency lift was arranged.

10.01.2022 EPIRBs when Activated will let you be Heard, Seen and Rescued

08.01.2022 No need to sell the sizzle, Just raffle them off. Help those, helping you.

08.01.2022 It was an eventful Sunday afternoon with a member of the public reporting an over turned sail boat with two men sitting on the side. The guys were out there for... almost two hours unable to get the attention of passing vessels until eventually someone stopped and asked them if they were ok. Our rescue vessel CG23 headed out to assist and arrived on scene to try and assist the righting of the vessel. Unfortunately, the yacht could not be kept upright and the men were rapidly tiring and feeling the affects of the cold water, wind and exhaustion. We retrieved the two guys onto our vessel and brought them back to shore where they could recover and receive attention. We then returned back to the vessel to attempt to tow it back to Manly Harbour. After eventually securing a tow rope we managed to successfully, albeit slowly tow the vessel. The guys were very very happy to get their boat back and it was a happy ending. For us at coast guard, this is another example of the importance of taking all the safety gear you possibly can, even if your vessel doesn't require it by law.

08.01.2022 An amazing job by a VOLUNTEER Coast Guard Skipper to keep his crew and vessel safe at all times. Now you can see why they train and train and rehearse for just these types of volunteer rescues on the bluewater... Join their team today.. https://coastguard.com.au/volunteer/

06.01.2022 MAYDAY and Our Radio Operators This is the second Mayday incident that QF6 has been involved in over the last 12 months or so, where tragedy would have happened... if our Radio Operator had not heard and responded to a call from a vessel sinking. Who will forget last June when young Julian Hohnen and Dad and mate were rescued off Caloundra when their boat sank. The point of this Post is to emphasise the absolute importance of having our Radio Room operating 24/7. The problem is that we need more Radio Operators to keep this service going 24/7. So, if you would like to help and you have some spare time to do 1 or 2 shifts a month, please give our Radio Room a call on 5444 3222 or send an email to [email protected] and we will get back to you with further details.

05.01.2022 Volunteers have just returned to base after assisting a 6m centre console.
