21.01.2022 Yesterday, we collected a deepsea lizardfish, Bathysaurus cf. ferox from approximately 2000m in Perth Canyon. The fish was collected with ROV SuBastian on board RV Falkor with Schmidt Ocean Institute. Today, we shrunk Styrofoam cups #science

19.01.2022 We found some elaborate pufferfish nests in 130m of water off Western Australia and published the discovery in the Journal of Fish Biology. Until now, these were only known to exist in 30m off southern Japan. Super cool! Also, does anyone own a submarine rated to 130+m? ... asking for a friend.

13.01.2022 SOUTH WEST OCEAN STUDY Scientists have used new technology to carry out a deep-water survey of waters off the South West coast. And the vision shows animal and plant life thriving deep down. Scientists are trying to assess how vulnerable the region is to human activity.

09.01.2022 Lab member, Todd Bond, has boarded the RV Falkor and begun steaming out of the Port of Albany, heading for Leeuwin Canyon. Todd is part of the science team forming the Great Australian Deep-Sea Coral and Canyon Adventure which will use a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), SuBastian, to dive deep into the Leeuwin and Perth Canyons (3000+m). Follow cruise progress at the link below and live-stream their dives at Schmidt Ocean Facebook page or their YouTube channel. https://schmidtocean.org/cruise/coralandcanyonadventure/

08.01.2022 Clean State podcast episode 2 is now streaming! Join Professor Gary Kendrick for a conversation about his great love of WA’s coastline, seagrasses, and conservation innovation. Gary and colleagues have been at the forefront of seagrass restoration and the blue carbon movement more broadly. And with such a massive extent of coastline featuring globally significant carbon stores, world heritage sites, and deep community and cultural knowledge, the potential for regional WA is enormous. Gary takes us to one of his favourite parts of WA, to share a little of this spectacular story. Available on all podcast apps and here: https://lnkd.in/gWNxFm6
